My new gaming rig (any thoughts?)

So this is what I ordered from newegg the other night.

https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion...

I think this will be rather future proof and should last me a while before needing an upgrade.

I know it is a bit late since I already ordered it but was curious if there was any thoughts on what I had?

Add more RAM!

Nice

And yes, your wife will kill you ... I think you're okay on "future proof", also

Gratz!

I like too but at nearly $400 for another 2gb I will wait till programs are actually using more I think. That was my plan any way.

That's a solid rig. And not a lot's gonna use more than 2G at the moment.

I'm jealous. This is about what I'd do for an upgrade, maybe I could reuse a case and a PS and the DVD burner, but I'd need to pony up for the rest. It's always a question of when to pull the trigger though!!!

Youll be good for awhile.

I just put together pretty much the same thing but with dual XFX 8800 GTSs. If your going to go SLI, you might want to bump that PSU up to at least 750... you have to think about your harddrives, DVD, fans etc etc and each GTX requires 150W under load all by itself

Other than that.. nice Make sure you get the new eVGA bios.

edit...
Oh also... get yourself one hell of a CPU cooler... not that the CPU will need it but you 8800 will. Might want to think about water cooling that puppy.. with the SLI i have and all the cooling options I have on it (no water yet but im getting there), my 8800s run idle at 150 degrees F (71 C). Be careful!

*drools*

If I hadn't just got an Xbox 360 and a 37 inch HDTV, I *might* be able to convince my wife that an upgrade of that magnitude was necessary.... Though, my current rig still plays Company of Heroes at 1280 x 1024 at playable frame rates (just barely), and Source engine games run great, so I couldn't quite justify it yet. And HD gaming has a hook in me for now, so I am resisting the urge to upgrade for now (hopefully I can resist it for another year or so, when the hole in my bank recovers from this Christmas!)

Nice machine!

Sorry I did not put this in correct place on first post. Not use to this new forum.

As for cooling I was hoping I could get by with stock cooling for now and maybe later change my cooling solution especially if I decide to overclock.

Do you think that it will be a big problem?

I dont know much about that case you bought, but I ended up having to buy a really nice CPU cooler that didnt restrict the airflow in the case. I took *hours* to wire my rig w/out any wires in front of the board. And I also put 2 harddrive cooler bays in the front to get the airflow going (here).

When I first turned my system on those graphics cards were running upwards of 180 degrees idle Apparently 150 is normal but that just plain out right scares me. So I put in a patch (albeit noisy one) so that I wouldnt melt anything. I'm currently waiting for a good 8800 water cooler solution to come available.

Not to be a downer.. but at this point I would have waited for the R600 to make an appearance.

Not for the price I built this one at Plus my old one has been aging. Think I rebuilt this whole machine for under $1300 and that includes the 8800 GTSs.

But of course when the R600 comes out Im sure there will be those that say "You should have waited until the XXX comes out." Thats computers for you =/

You're gonna dig that processor. I have one and it runs like buttah.

No downer at all GG it is always the way of PCs that there is something new arround the corner that is better.

I am actually buying this now as I need to free up an old PC that I have for some business venture I am trying. Suppose I could have built a new PC for the business venture but my old one is more then enough for what I am doing so if I am going to spen the money might as well spend it where I can get the most from it I thought.

Since buying now I really wanted to get a dx10 compliant board as this may have to last me for a while as my gaming pc.

Par you did nice job with the wiring it looks like.

My case has no side views but it all alluminum and I am using it on my current PC and liked it a lot. I almost went with the thermaltake armored series case but that thing is just too big really so keep with the coolmaster that has done well by me.

To be honest though I never really have checked the temp of my components but I do know that it all runs fairly quiet considering so guessing the fans are not working too hard on the chips.

Youll just want to keep an eye on it. I honestly thought that I would be fine with mine.. but then I was curious and looked at the nVidia monitor and saw 180 degrees... I freaked out! You'll like that board though... very nice and I have to admit, I've never owned anything from nVidia but a video card and all their drivers and apps are very stable after the bios update.

You'll be happy with yours for at least a couple years I'm sure. And what is nice about that 775 socket is that you can upgrade that chip to the new Quads coming out at the end of the year if you think you want to.

That GTX is a monster though... its a couple inches longer than my GTSs so youll want to make sure it will actually fit in your case!

Well in case you have the urge here are some pictures of the case I am getting.

Yea I looked at that case very nice and youll be happy with it I'm sure. Just make sure you have good airflow to keep that card of yours cool.

Keep us posted, Id like to see what it looks like and what you think of the performance when your done.

yeah sure.. but in this case we are mere weeks away from the R600.. I'm not talking about future products but something thats about to hit..

aka you sure didnt want to buy a Prescott P4 a few weeks before the Core Duos came out.

Correct but I really did not have weeks to wait as I needed to get a PC now. Suppose I could opperate a PC down but to be honest I not seen much hype on the R600 that made me think that I had to have it and the 8800 will fill the bill for me.

You may be right that in a few weeks I will have wished I waited but because if what is driving my time table I did not really have the luxury of waiting.

Its ok Mal... regardless of what the R600 can do (and anything else that comes out in the next year or so), you'll be happy and quite satisfied for a long time with what you got

Enjoy it! You paid enough for it

It's gonna be a tight fit in there for those GTX's.

Definitely looks like an awesome rig though. I have an E6400 (clocked past X6800 speeds ;)) and I can't say enough positive things about the Core 2 Duo line.

I have a 6600 Duo core and looooovvveeee it.

Got all my stuff from newegg 3 days after I ordered it.

Assembled everything with no issue.

Had plenty of room for the 8800 gtx with the mobo and case I selected.

Hardest part about getting it all together was trying to cable it as to have best air flow as I could.

I can not tell you how much I really like the cool master case I have this is 2nd PC I used it on and well worth it.

Once that was all done I fired it up and installed Windows Vista Ultimate (not a beta version I have the real deal).

Install was smooth as pie and I fired up windows for first time no issues untill it started to look for drivers.

That is where my fairy tale ends because basically there are no drivers for the 8800gtx out yet and will not be out till the general public release of vista if even then.

Not had the heart to clear the HD and install XP so will decide what I do about it in a couple days.

Still though no complaints and running fine considering.

I not OC'd the chip and more then likely will not till I feel that the processor is too slow.

When I do will have to look for a 3rd party cooling solution maybe but so far all stock is doing great.
