Gametap: Interstate 76!

Interstate 76, The best game ever made, is coming to Gametap.

I've just recently subscribed to the service, and I'm *very* pleased with it so far. My wife and I have been playing the Sam & Max games together, and they're fantastic.

*hyperventilate*

Seriously, this is on GameTap now? Oh man, get me a paper bag...

Not live yet, but I just got an email from them about new and upcoming games, and the last line of the email is:

"Hint for next time: It's 1976. Do you know where your incredibly heavily armed custom Picard is?"

That can only mean one game.

Did they fix it? I76 is unplayable on XP without some serious tweakage. There's this bug where the wheels spin superfast... horizontally. I don't know why, but it's hilarious watching taurus bounce along slowly. Unfortunately it kills the single player campaign.

Oh man I loved that game so much. If it indeed shows up next month then that will be what pushes me over the edge to subscribe to Gametap.

Agreed. If it works as it should I'm in. I'm hoping for nitro pack as well.

Our only hint of the game is 1 line in an email, how would anyone know?

Its hard to say if a bug in a release version will be there in Gametap's. I think most of their PC ports are 1.0 versions which can be bad. I recently played Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within on Gametap had some serious bugs. On my system the sound glitches out to turn the audio into unbearably loud static. Pleasant. It crashed twice too. My major beefs with the game were design choices though so I ended up deleting it pretty quickly.

I'd have to assume that it's fixed. The gametap client required 2000/xp, and even the latest white label retail version of I76 is Win98 only.

At least, I hope it's fixed:)

The Prince of Persia bug is something that I don't think was ever fixed. However, stuff that goes on GameTap is from what I understand, updated to run on any OS the client supports. Otherwise, none of their DOS stuff would work. Most of the older DOS/Windows games I've played have run well.

Groove, check your map!

Certis, I've never said this to another man, but you just gave me goosebumps.

I haven't played the game since it's release (97/98, I think?), so I'm hoping that the replay won't be a case where my memories of the game are better than the game itself. I think I'm safe, though.

I think we're all safe there. I remember this game being ten kinds of awesome.

The sequel on the other hand was horrendous.

Yoink!

It can't be worse than Interstate 82, old graphics or no. I think 76's style is simple and interesting enough to transcend the older graphics to some degree.

Groove, do us all a favor and check your map!

I hated staying on the road during the opening

Myself and Sinister had a blast playing this game back in "The Day". I would always equip the flamer which would reduce the car to red health (no damage to the parts though), and then use the pistol to kill the driver. The salvage I used to get after each mission was fantastic.

YES! If the multiplayer works, I'm there.

*edit* Who am I kidding I'm already there.

So many fond memories of this game. I'd love to play it again.

I fired up the game about two years ago again, and IMO, it has aged quite well. The driving model is simply superb and the style helps make the game look younger than it is. The soundtrack is a classic anyway.

The soundtrack is a classic anyway.

That's what always did for me. That and the cutscenes.

The ending for this game is so very awesome.

Skeeter: "Jade built a good car, but she got out."
Groove: "What?"
Skeeter: "Never get out of the car."

Ah the memories. If multiplayer works we definitely have to squeeze it into our schedule. I wonder how the rampant hacking will be handled. The original was ruined by damn cars rolling around on armadillo feet and tank treads.

This game was awesome, but I had some horrible experiences online with tanks, flying cars, and being one shotted. Multiplayer with just my friends was incredible. I remember buying it and thinking Car Wars/Auto Duel wouldn't be to far off.

It shouldn't have been too far off...but so far the automotive-combat timeline goes:

  • Autoduel--1986
  • Interstate '76--1997
  • Auto Assault--2006

I challenge you, sir, to a Division 20 arena duel in 2016. Or '17.

In the meantime, Auto Assault still rocks hard--and they're about to add mail and an auction house, finally!

EDIT to make the cool formatted list and correct typos.

Im not sure if this is well known but the original 'Play' CD can be put into most CD players (some get confused by it) and enjoyed as a soundtrack. You just have to skip the first track as it's just data. Its been in my rotation for nearly 10 years now

I never played it but there was also the unloved follow-up, Interstate 82, released in 1999.

Love the Car Wars games. Good old Autoduel on the C64!

If Auto Assault didn't have a monthly fee, I'd be on it.

It's funny how many outstanding games Mechwarrior 2 simulation engine has powered. Well, there were at least three - Mechwarrior 2, I76 and Battlezone.

I was hoping AutoAssault would be like I-76 when it came to building cars. I would have liked that more than how it currently is.

I'm surprised there hasn't been an rpg around cars. It wouldn't be to different than a scifi rpg. Just a car instead of a starship, and traveling to cities instead of planets.

So the car is either going to be

* a mount
* the player himself

Former makes it no different from horses in WoW. Latter will just ensure that everyone moves 10 times faster, but all the objects are 10 times farther from one another. Then at level 40 you will get a mount - a helicopter.

Drug War?

From Evil Avatar:

Hidden in today's new catalog is Interstate 76. Only you won't find it in the New Games ring. In fact, you won't find it anywhere under the name Interstate 76. Head to the search ring, search on "Groove Champion" (star of the game), and BOOM. There's your game. That racing/hot-rod week is still on the books (now slated for late Feb.), and we'll be officially releasing all the originally promised games then. But you can play Interstate 76 all you want in the meantime.

I am downloading now. And next week is X-Com!

Wow, Gametap rules.

Awesome, will download when I get home from work tonight.
