September 6 - September 10

Section:

After an amazing weekend in Seattle at PAX and more specifically hanging out with a few dozen of my new closest friends, it's nice to sit in a familiar chair and soak it all in. I still haven't totally synthesized how I feel about the primary event. There's a lot about it I liked, and a number of other things that still haven't quite jived with me. Soon I'll have more to say on that.

For now, I turn my attention to the direct week ahead, and to RUSE which is my choice for Game of the Week. This was one not so long ago that was completely off my radar for reasons that have been revisited enough that I don't even want to talk about it again. That said, there's a lot of good games to be paying attention to this first full week of September, games like NHL 11, HAWX 2, Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Kingdom Hearts, Birth by Sleep and more.

That's a pretty cool release list. Back to gaming!

Capitalism, Ho! Recettear comes out on the 10th.

Just finished the demo, and it's definitely my Game of the Week.

I was quite surprised that the PS3 took the lead in how many releases are coming out. Then I realized three of the games were Move related ... which isn't released for a week and a half, I believe.

And there's a Spiderman game? That came out of nowhere.

Aaaaaanyway, RUSE and Layton for me ... at some point.

Ack. I didn't realize until now that Layton and Birth By Sleep were coming out this week.

What? No R.U.S.E on the Wii?

Amnesia : Dark Descent is also out this week (tommorrow). Also the last Dragon Age DLC (The Morrigan one) and next Mass Effect 2 DLC (The Liara one)

Gonna be a busy week

Professor Layton? That's the sleeper hit of the week for me. Heck yeah!

Yes, indeed. Preordered.

My total response. I knew one was coming out - but I can't believe it is here already. That one totally snuck under the radar.

Bill Abner finally was allowed to talk about NHL 11 today, and tweeted this:

NHL 11 embargo lifted. Review (gameshark.com) coming later this morning. What you need to know: NHL 11 is the best game EA Sports has ever made.

The forces are gathering, and it looks like there will be plenty of Goodjers to play with, and possibly a league if you check out the NHL 11 Catch-all.

I think 20% of Canada just called in sick to work today.

Did anyone else check out the R.U.S.E. 3D demo that NVidia was showing off at PAX? I was highly disappointed after seeing the mushy Killzone 3/D and Guild Wars 2 3D demos - the latter on a monstrous 108 inch plasma - but the depth on R.U.S.E. was effective and not...well, annoying. Probably the best implementation of the tech that I've seen yet.

Was it, ah, useful? That's what I'm waiting for.

This! THIS! A hundred times this! Shame on you for not having it your list of "cool-kids-games-that-may-or-may-not-be-awesome". I've played it for about an hour, and for me it's the best game this year. Hands down. Suddenly, fear in computer games is real. Plus, at 15 euros on steam, it's a steal.

Also, yeaaay-wowchkbowkablaam for 101-in-1 Sports Megamix! It finally came out...or something.

Shoutout from me too - I only went to the site today because on the podcast you talked about the girls who only listen to the podcast. I'm just like that - listen to podcasts a lot while playing with my 2yo son (won't be long before he needs my full attention, but not yet ).

Anyway, wanted to point out that however much you guys (and many 'hardcore') rag on motion controllers like Move and Kinect, besides being able to play RUSE in 3D on PC, you can also play it on the PS3 with Move support, and as far as I can tell it seems quite an improvement over the DS3. Impressions everywhere seem universally favorable.

Here's a video comparing Move and DS3 controls:

Fortunately RUSE dumped its DRM for Steam's, but if that hadn't happened, it could have been a good alternative.

So by the time Move is out, I'm expecting you guys to give your impressions on this.
And while I'm at it, this list of upcoming Move enabled games is a nice one to keep an eye on:

Mind you - all this info, and all the sites linked are coming from pesky Europeans (Italian and Dutch), so you have been warned.

Honestly, I can't really say. I was too busy ooh-ing and ahh-ing over how smooth the zooming was that I couldn't wrap my head around how to actually play the friggin' thing. Call me easily amused.
