"Left 4 Dead" Catch All

Super brief press release here and an image here. Zombie-killing co-op? Where's my shotgun?

Edit: By request - http://steamcommunity.com/groups/gwjl4d

Awesome! Sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Gabe's quote starts with "by leveraging". Ugh. How about a game where we kill people who use brainless marketing-speak?

I will re-write it slightly for him:

----

"By leveraging both our zombie survival simulation and dismemberment technologies and then combining it with years of small-squad tactical multiplayer experience, Turtle Rock is bringing you, the gamer, the zombie smashing fun you've been waiting for and applying them all to Left 4 Dead," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "What Counter-Strike did for multiplayer action games, Left 4 Dead will do for zombie-bashing co-op goodness."

Left 4 Dead is built atop the most advanced version of the Source Zombie Dismemberment Simulation Engine and introduces version 2 of Turtle Rock's Rotted Brain Matter Intellgence (R.B.M.I) technology.

Left 4 Dead will crawl from the grave to your PC in 2007.

----

Not perfect, but its got my coagulated blood flowing.

So this is just an official version of the popular CS: Source Zombie mod? Thats exactly what it sounds like to me.

This game has zombies. Isn't that close enough?

Link me to this mod of yours, or else make sure this game is released tomorrow. I'm in dire need of some coop zombie bashing.

Maybe I'm missing something, but aren't Zombies supposed to be brainless? What do they need to emphasize the AI for?

The AI is probably for your teammates when you don't have 4 people playing.

'Realistic' Zombie AI is critical.
1) They must discern zombie from non-zombie.
2) They must decide when to go for your cranial cavity immediately or just bite you on the arm, in which case they may not get to eat your brain before you zombify.
3) When you lop them in half or quarter them, each dismembered zombie portion must be able to spawn its own A.I. that adapts to which movement / attack capabilities remain.

Here I will simulate some scenarios of adaptive zombie A.I.

If one or two arms remain attached to torso, claw forward toward prey
OR
If only dismembered zombie head, moan and work jaw bone to build rolling momentum, upon reaching critical speed, tongue jump, fly through the air and bite victim on neck
OR
If you are just a dismembered zombie foot... sorry dude, game over! Just flap around a bit and wiggle your zombie toes as an environmental effect.

4) Zombies must exhibit a natural grouping tendency, so they can pulldown their prey and devour it in numbers.
5) When dancing, zombies must be able to maintain a shuffle in rhythm and don red zipper-laden clothes.

Between this and Black Widow Games darling "They hunger: Lost Souls" next year is going to be a good time for fps zombie smashin'

Hehe, a new genre has been born

Ugh, any game with a number as a word in the title will not get my money out of principle.

Its a server-side mod for CS:Source. Theres not much to it other than terrorists with zombie skins, knives and recharging health. Browse for servers in CS:S and look for "Zombie Mod." I just thought it was pretty convenient how this was being developed by Turtle Rock after the CS:S mod has been so popular for a while now. I really do hope theres more to it than CS with zombies.

I wish I could tell you guys more about this. My friend at Valve has been play testing this for weeks. It sounds really badass. Let me just reassure you, though, that there is much more to it than CS with zombies.

That's just enough information to tease me. Screw you hippy

Oh yeah suuuuuuure. We all know what 'my friend' is a codeword for.;)

Well, here's a little something to tide you over, swiped from Halflife2.net:

"Left 4 Dead feels like one of those games that was always about to happen," writes Jim Rossignol in today's PC Gamer. "It's you and your friends versus a city of rabid mutant zombies." What's this? Why, a new multiplayer co-op survial horror game from Valve and chums Turtle Rock, of course!

Left 4 Dead will hurl four survivor players into a mad world of apocalyptic horror and crazy dead people, asking them to complete objectives while facing a motley zombie horde including scary running zombies, horrible tongue-flicking smokey zombies, jumping leaping hunting zombies, fat hideous bubbling zombies and even huge hulking tanking zombies.

But that's not all: the horde will be controlled by an AI 'director' and additional players can leap in to control undead avatars at any point. Currently, there is no news on the internet about this anywhere, but you could go down to your local shop and buy an issue of the latest PC Gamer (unless you're a dirty foreigner, ho ho ho). No screenshots are (legally) available as yet - until then, you'll have to make do with a crude impression - but rest assured we'll keep you updated. Prepare to be zombified!

This sounds very cool. Just please, don't quote Gabe in press releases anymore.

More, including some scans from the PC Gamer UK article.

I could really do with some screenshots now

In the meantime, be sure to check out http://www.blackwidowgames.com/ for the latest on Lost Souls. Neil Manke can throw together a hell of a map for a mountain-man!

This game sounds like it could be very very fun. Any word if it will be released tomorrow?

Tomorrow? Are they insane!? I can't wait that long!

Heh... if anyone played SWG on the Bria Server, LFD was the uber-elite hardcore griefing Imperial A-hole guild. I hated those guys.

Wait whats supposed to be released tomorrow? The Valve thing says 07, and I don't see any concrete info on the other site either

Well I don't know. I would like it to be released tomorrow. Or today if you take my previous post into account.

Sounds good. Although I would have liked to be able to control a none-boss infected. Maybe have some extra attack power then the normal infected, but looking the same, so you could blend in with the crowd, and look for a opening. I guess you'll have to use the hunter for that now.

Another long preview: http://www.left4dead411.com/left-4-dead-preview-pg1.php

I'm not one to buy games at full price but I'll make an exception for this. After all, this may be the last game I ever buy.

As in you're giving up games, or simply announcing your intention to lead a life of petty crime?
