Splinter Cell: Double Agent Reviews and Impressions

Pages

Because I don't want to spend the next 3 months talking about the full game in a thread about the demo...

Of course IGN reviews Double Agent the day it comes out. 9.0. They claim the AI is greatly improved but still stupid. The level design is "off the hook". Overall a bland review, but at least they like the game. Oh, and OXM loved it so it must be good.

New Rule: Reviews can no longer complain about AI or pathing being bad unless they are actually worse than in other similar titles.

I'll forward that to IGN. Those guys are cutting edge.

New Rule: IGN is not to be trusted. Reviews are acceptable by the following sources.

1.) This forum.
2.) Bill Harris
3.) Escapist (GWJ 3.0)
4.) Game Trailers video review with that one guy.
5.) Friends word of mouth. Depends on your friend.

Man Law. I motion that Johnny Wilson, Tom Chick, Bruce Geryk, and the editoral staff of CGW (it's not GFW until next month!) be added to the list.

I don't have a problem with IGN because they get very detailed and I can separate fact from their opinion. I've been reading IGN since it was Imagine Gaming Network, before Next Generation Magazine, so I've seen them grow, evolve, then de-evolve. So while their opinion sucks, at least I speak their language and know how to separate the bark from the bite.

And Tom Chick is definitely added to the list.

I don't know any of those people so no additions just yet.

We just need Eddie Griffin and Triple H to sign off on that one.

If you don't know those names you have no buisiness making a list.
Anyhow, is everyone getting the 360 version? ..Because I know I'll miss the PC version...

Johnny Wilson - Former EIC of CGW (I heart CGW), runs http://www.manifestogames.com
Tom Chick - Runs http://www.quartertothree.com
Bruce Geryk - Brain surgeon. Also writes about war games.

I want the PC version as well. That's where I started my MP goodness with the demo of Pandora Tomorrow.

When it comes to Splinter Cell, I'm strictly a singleplayer gamer. There were just too many frustrating sessions of 10 year's olds snapping my neck in the dark before I could even blink twice. Plus the 2 on 2 and 3 on 3 just isn't enough...

You should try Versus with us with Double Agent. It would seem that Ubisoft has both eliminated the possibility of an overly aggressive spy and made playing as a traditional spy more fun.

Quick, lazy questions. I've not been following the game terribly closely and I haven't bother with the demo.
-Is the game significantly less dark?
-Does that "sonar" mentioned earlier remove the possibility of a merc walking right by a spy hidden in the shadows? Is it a proximity sensor or just a motion sensor?
-Is there any hope for new skins?

1. In the demo when you are a spy the world is much less dark except in some tunnels. At first this caused me to think I was visible in cases where I was not but have found myself adapting to the new spectrum. From movies it would appear that the singleplayer works this way. Also the Kinshasa level is completely in the daytime so there should be little to no darkness.

2. The proximity sensor pulses in three levels depending upon how close you are to a spy. The spy also feels a subdued echo of this pulse so it goes both ways. In the demo I have found myself as a spy snapping more mercs after hiding near them undetected, keeping the proximity pulse active long enough for them to become accustomed to it. Smart use of it can benefit the player no matter which side they're on. There is also a motion detector for the merc that is always on that outlines the spy.

3. There is a locked spot in the menu for skins and there was been talk from mods on the forums that skins can be unlocked.

The sonar works at all angles so spies above you are also detected.

Got the 360, no DA. Apparently the store didn't get the shipment yet. Put down the 5-spot and will pick it up tomorrow.

Supposed to be on shelves tomorrow morning here.

What version (360 or pc ) do you folks plan to buy? I am leaning toward the 360 version but will go with the majority for multiplayer purposes.

I'll most likely be picking this up Friday.

360, definitely. Xbox Live wins out.

They make you want to eato.

I'll be passing on this one. Besides the time and financial constraints of picking up a new game, I am really irked about the multiplayer. I have not tried it out myself, but I really enjoyed the vs. in CT and not being able to go back to that style of play irritates me.

While the changes they brought in helps keep aggro spies down (from what I have read) I never had much of a problem with them. While I was a merc, I always made sure to keep my back to a wall (after a while it just became second nature) and made liberal use of the ability to meele attack in a cirlce to knock over spies sneaking up. When the spy was down I rarely killed him by dropping down and snapping his neck. Rather I just shot him in the head because there was a good chance his partner was waiting for me to drop so he could sneak up behind me and get him.

I would like to try the multiplayer out to see if I would still retain my jaded feelings after getting some time in. If they released a vs. PC demo I would definetly give it a try.

If you haven't tried it then why judge it? I loved PT and CT multiplayer, and I am begining to love DA now as well. It's not worse just different. Different is good right? Different isn't another night of CTF.

I take it this means Zombie Skate is going to be Tumbleweed Central tonight?

You are quite right. I do not mean to come off as bashing the game. If I can get my hands on a PC demo for vs. play, I will load it up and give it a try. For me, the main selling point for Chaos Theory was the same vs. action as in Pandora Tomorrow, with new maps and some tweaks. I was looking forward to the next Splinter Cell having more of the same so to speak. I guess I am just old and set in my ways.

Again, no intentions of bashing the game. I would like to hear some more impressions on the vs. multiplayer from those of you who do have it.

People still play that? Hasn't it gotten really old about 10 times over yet?

360 it is. How does Thursday (tomorrow) night sound for some mp?
