New TV Season Thoughts

I cut Smith from my TiVo after the moronic "I'm going to steal that guy's motorcycle in broad daylight and lead his buddy on a chase" scene in the 2nd episode.

I agree that was a dumb scene, but that logic would get The Sopranos axed as well.

You're assuming way too much. I didn't say that the scene was the only reason I deleted Smith, only that the deletion happened right after that. Kind of a "straw that broke the camel's back" thing (though this straw was more like an I-beam)

As for the Sopranos, dumb stuff in that show erased my interest in watching it too.

Smith just got the axe. Too bad I thought the show was quite good.

Damn. CBS ain't wastin' any time.

Mmmm, delicious. Brings a tear to my eye.=)

I'm pretty addicted to Grey's. I think the finale got kind of ridiculous last season, but I like what's happening so far in season 3, minus the disappointing premiere.

I missed the second episode of Kidnapped, I was kind of curious to see whether or not they kept the semi-action bent of the premiere or traded all that in for a slower drama.

Eureka got renewed, for anyone who's a fan. I've only seen around 3 episodes, but it was entertaining enough, and until Battlestar tonight, the only decent sci-fi on television.

So Smith is first, any guesses on second? I think I'll throw in with Jericho. With Six Degrees close behind.

"Kidnapped" is outta here.....per TV Guide yesterday....

I'm rooting for "The Nine"- I *really* liked the opening episode- and te fact that the show is willing to take it's time exploring what happens to folks after such an extreme event-; no CURED! let's move on to the next episode.....

And I'm intrigued by snippets from the rescue; I remember hearing somone screaming *not* to shoot the one robber; also, the last five minutes were a kick....and none of the spoilers revealed that, thankfully.....I'm very much looking forward to the next episode.....

I'm not that surprised. The writing was on the wall when NBC didn't bother to air a repeat of the second episode on Saturday like they had initially planned on doing.

On the bright side, BSG returns tonight and Ghost Hunters is coming back on Wednesday. Huzzah!

Six Degrees certainly. What a pointless show. It's like J.J. Abrahms got tired of annoying Lost viewers by not wrapping up plot points - so now he's got a show with no plot at all, nothing to interfere with making things up as he goes along.

Smith and Six Degrees are the two shows I started watching this season that have missed the TiVo cut, and Jericho is dangerously close to joining them (it's only my love of nuclear war that's kept it going so far)

Bring forth de Battlestar.

Anyone want to tell me more about The Unit?

And would someone explain to me why Boston Rob of all people is on a paranormal investigating show on the Sci-Fi Channel? Is he like the Fred of that particular Scooby Gang?

Wow. My two favorite new shows, Smith and Kidnapped, both got the axe.

No.

Well, okay.

It's a show my wife and I were interested in since it had Dennis Haysbert (aka President Palmer from 24). It's an action/drama that splits its time between the special ops team in the field and the family life back home. Unfortunately, we felt it did both poorly. The action felt weak and the drama was boring. Haven't found any characters particularly likeable and some are downright unpleasant. One story arc for the entire series so far has been the wife of one of the soldiers having an affair with the guy's commanding officer. Pretty much every conversation between the wife and C.O. boils down to "We can't do this, we need to stop." "No, have sex with me now." "Okay! I hate that I'm doing this."

We tried to give it a couple of chances and finally just dropped it.

As of tv.com on the 6th, Kidnapped isn't "axed". They're going to run the original 13 episodes for season 1, and production has stopped for anything beyond that. And it's moving to Saturdays. I wasn't sure how it could survive more than a season anyway, but hopefully it will be a decent season. I mean, what could they do, kidnap someone else?

Actually, yeah. Keep the same recovery team, and move to a different family. Same way they do multiple seasons of 24 or a crime show.

Jericho will last a full season, at least. After some of the stupid stuff that happened in the episode(s) following the pilot, they've gotten better. I would put Six Degrees way ahead of Jericho on that list. It's just plain irritating. I downloaded the pilot, erased it ten minutes in.

I just wish that they'd kept with Skeet Ulrich going out across the nuked wasteland. That's the storyline people want to see.

The action was weak early on because CBS didn't put much faith into it. However, David Mamet (writer/director of Spartan, Glengarry Glen Ross, Heist, and writer of Ronin) writes and executive produces the show, so I stuck with it.

The affair story arc that Quentin mentioned was stupid - and with the magic of TiVo, I skipped - but has phased out quickly and resolved. The action sequences are now much better - now that CBS has put more money into production value - and the acting has been great. I would prefer ignoring more of the wives' angle, as those stories generally get sanctimonious, and how dramatic can that be without being repetitive? However, it is what it is - an episodic special ops show. It's not particularly intense or heavy, but it's a good show.

"Vanished" is probably out of here soon...though Fox is moving it to Friday nights (rumor)...in it's place on MOnday nights, they are moving "Justice".

"Justice" is kind of interesting- I think it's been discussed earlier in this thread or another....

Just finished with Rome. I'd definitely recommend that you rent it but maybe not buy it. Still haven't seen an HBO show I haven't thought was quality.

Rome definitely picks up after a brief lull in episode 4. I think the reason I care about the two soldier characters more than anyone else, and why I almost lost interest in episode 4 since they weren't the focus, is that with all the others, you know what happens. I mean, I have a general idea of how the Roman politics played out, and what happened to people like Caesar and Brutus, but the two soldiers, that I don't know.

I know someone else mentioned "Dexter" on showtime. I just watched the second episode. It was excellent. It makes me want to run out and get the book the show is based on.

You know, what bugs me about Jericho (we're watching it now) is that so few people seem to grasp that the world has changed. I mean, I don't expect everyone to deal with it well. It's just that as far as they know, the whole outside world is dead and gone and the United States civilization as we know it is over. Almost no one seems to get it.

Edit: And the whole teen angst thing? Not interesting.

As if teens even watch CBS.

Jericho is a prime example of how bad an intriguing idea can get f*cked up by network television. It's like this year's Invasion

Yeah, I deleted Jericho from my Tivo season passes, but my wife made me put it back. Then we sat and made fun of it for an hour. It's such a good idea for a show, done so, so poorly. I really wanted to like it.

I was with Jericho until this latest episode. My viewership of that show is on life support. The Nine is also losing me.

Friday Night Lights, on the other hand, is still going strong. Really enjoying it for what it is: overly flashy, teen-angst in the Texas bible belt.

I am also enjoying Shark -- it is my guilty pleasure of the week.

But, best of all, is Heros. It is a not-to-miss show for me right now.

Same.

I dropped Jericho after the 2nd episode, but I have put it back on the list this week. I've decided that it can be pretty entertaining if you stop looking at it like a drama and start looking for things to laugh about.

Veronica Mars is so awesome. This third season has some really tight writing.

The 70s had the hustle... the 80s, the moonwalk. We have the faux-lesbian dance.

She looked smokin' in that getup at the frat party.

First getup or second getup? Though both were smokin'.

True. Though I liked her better with the medium length hair from season 1.5.
