New TV Season Thoughts

Watched the second Smith. Quite good. I have to say that Jeff is my favorite character, and the all movie actor cast is really working for me.

Nope, I usually don't mind songs with that electronically altered sound, and he can't stand them.

But this time, I really truly hated it. Like fingernails on a chalkboard, cringing, waiting for it to be over, hated it.

In your face, Rusty!

I finally caught Jericho last night, it was the funniest comedy series I've ever seen. I was laughing until I cried. I may have pooped a little.

Yeah, whatever promise the idea had, the writers (monkeys with keyboards?) have completed wasted in just two episodes. The second episode was MST3K worthy.

Really didn't find Jericho to be all that bad. Not sure if I will make through a season, but I will probably give it a least a few more episodes.

Jericho was promptly removed from my watch list after last night's episode. I thought the writing was comical at best. One of the things I cannot stand is when they try to craft the story around the lead character. My thought is that you should write a good story, then insert the "star." I really wanted to give this show a chance, but the first episode was a little lacking, and the second was ridiculous. I'm out.

Groan worthy moments for me;

The mayor's bearded son, lecturing the bar patrons, and then kissing the bartender.

The ditzy blond not thinking its strange that two deputies in a local sheriff's car don't know there way around.

Skeet and said ditzy blond closing the storm door, the second before driving (radioactive) rain hits.

The amazing amounts of plastic sheeting and duct tape the whole town seemed to find, not to mention why are we all so afraid of nuclear fallout if all we need is duct tape and plastic.

I could go on... at least Heroes is good.

Duct tape and plastic sheeting stops the nuclear bombs from entering your skin. I have a bomb shelter built entirely out of duct tape and plastic sheeting. I'm the envy of my block.

We're assuming the plastic sheeting and duct tape will actually work. Maybe we find out in episode five, "oh sh*t, we were wrong." And then we get mutant babies and two-headed cows and people with Garden of Eden Creation Kits trying to rebuild society.

I just saw "Heroes" and to my surprise I actually liked it. I can't wait to see next week's eps. i really like the incorporation of "human" aspects/flaws in these super heroes (or maybe villains) soon-to-be.

Just saw it, was very impressed. In fact, I think we might need to start a Heroes only thread, to me it just joined BSG and Lost as a show that needs to be dissected.

Right with you, I almost didn't watch it but by the end of the hour I was very intrigued. Much darker and more violent than I expected. I don't watch much TV, but it's the one new show this season that I've added to the DVR. The others are Lost, My Name is Earl, and The Office. I'm thinking of dropping The Office, though. The writing and performances are still solid, but I dunno, the joke's starting to feel a bit old.

Anyone else notice that Veronica Mars season three happened? Episode is called "Welcome Wagon". I'm only on season two episode six.

I'm finishing off the season 1 box of Veronica Mars, then I have to pass it along to my fiancee for her to watch.

CDC Radiation Emergencies says:

Duct tape and heavy plastic sheeting"”You can use these items to seal the door to your shelter and to seal any vents that open into your shelter for a short period of time if a radiation plume is passing over.

I doubt we'll see the residents of Jericho safe behind their plastic barriers for more than a few days, so that's not in groan-worthy territory (yet).

It WAS interesting just how abundant the thick plastic sheeting was in Jericho.

Edwin, the season premier of Veronica Mars is this coming Tuesday (October 3rd). The first episode of season 3 has apparently been available for viewing on the web for a while as a promotion. The first week of October is going to be quite the TV week for me with Lost, Battlestar, and Veronica all starting their new seasons.

Ok, I was wrong. Jericho really is as bad as you guys made it out to be. While I decided to let some of the cliches and weak writing go in the second episode, it is obvious the show is just bad. I mean real bad. Honestly, I'm tempted to edit my previous comments about the show.

Did anyone catch The Nine? My wife and I really did like the premier of this. Not going to be a very happy show, but looks like another one that might have benefitted from being on HBO.

Great story idea, and pretty good acting. Production values are up there with HBO types of shows. So Jericho is out, and is replaced by The Nine. Anybody think The Nine will make it?

I'm not sure what to make of The Nine, yet, mainly because I can't really tell what it's about. Is there going to be a main plot revolving around the bank situation or is it going to be episodic in nature with the underlying mystery of what happened in the bank? That said, I am interested enough to stick around for another episode or two to try to get a grip on the show.

The Nine struck me as another Lost/X-files. We'll be stuck wondering what the heck happened in the bank until they get cancelled.

Indeed. I love TV Shows that don't really have a story to tell, they just want to be all atmospherey (I know, not a word, that's my sarcasm coming through).

A soon to be former Lost viewer....

Has anyone else been watching HBO's Rome? I just watched the first two episodes yesterday. It seems pretty good so far.

Yeah. It's like Gladiator + porn minus the good parts.

I kid, I kid. It's actually pretty good. It gets better later in the season though.

Shows I watch that are in production: BSG. We watched the first several episodes of Psych and enjoyed it, but my Tivo is offline and so we haven't seen it in quite a bit. Not sure if I mind.

Shows that I watch on DVD: Seinfeld, The West Wing (although I'm on season 5, and I think my fiancee is about to declare us done with it)

Shows I've never seen but am somewhat interested in: Lost, Heroes, Studio 60, Smith, The Unit, Rome, Deadwood, The Nine

Any thoughts? I'd like to hear more about Rome and The Unit, particularly.

The only trouble I have with Rome so far is that I only really care about one or two of the characters. I've only watched two episodes though. I wasn't in love with the wire till about the 4th or 5th.

I'm a little disappointed with the seinfeld dvds. I expected a lot more as far as extras. The commentaries are pretty weak as well. As much as I like Jerry, listening to him do a commentary track by his lonesome isn't so great.

You know, I like Heroes, but I after the first two episodes I don't know if I can continue watching it. The extremely bad psuedo-philosophical voiceover musings that begin and end the episodes drives me up the wall. How can the show's writing be so inconsistant? "Sometimes only a heart can know the smallest truths." Come on.

Yes, bring the hate. I love listening to people talk about the shows they hate, as they watch it every week. So what other types of shows do you not like?

Personally, I like shows that tell a long story of how the characters deal with extreme circumstances. I really don't need there to be a nice neat story every week, or even enormous revelations. There are plenty of reasons not to like Lost and these types of shows, I just don't see the reason they get attacked for them. My wife get sick of the open ended storyline of Lost. So she just stopped watching it.

But yes, The Nine seems like it will take a season or two to tell the story of what happened in the 52 hours they were held hostage. It will infer things, and then surprise you with twists. Many people will complain that the twists are cheats, and then tune in next week to see what else it did poorly.

I think it would be interesting to know how this was filmed. Have they already filmed the entire bank robbery in order to drop in the flashbacks, or will they be created on the fly?

A very legitimate point, but all I was really looking for from them was the episodes preserved in their glory. It's a pleasure to watch the whole thing in order. So many episodes that I've never seen - the one I watched last night was totally new to me. I had to stop eating and drinking at various points because it was too funny. That's what I'm in it for.

My wife and I really enjoyed Rome. It's a lot like that one Bab5 episode that followed 2 janitors on the station while all around them momentus events were happening. In Rome, a lot of the show focuses on two kind of average joe soldiers and how they get caught up in the machinations of the Empire. Does anyone know when season 2 starts?

Jan 7. Final season.

After about 3-4 episodes, I wondered if I was going to keep it on my TiVo or not.

After about 5, I thought it was the best show on TV.

Watch it all the way through once, then go back and re-watch it. I'm getting ready to do my re-watch, I can't wait.

I'm a bit sad to hear that it will only run 1 more season, but like the news article says, it was originally going to be a mini-series. To get two full, expensive seasons out of it is pretty damn good.

Smith just got the axe. Too bad I thought the show was quite good.
