April 12 - April 16

Section:

I don't quite understand why stealth shooters do nothing for me. The closest I ever came to enjoying this kind of game is Deus Ex, which is a pale approximation at best. Even Thief and its progeny, which I understand almost everyone else holds in the kind of deific adoration usually reserved for saintly relics, did pretty much nothing for me.

All that boring creeping around, do I look like I have all day to hang out in this dimly lit corner waiting for just the right moment to blow out a candle? No, I do not! The only thing I care for less is a focus on co-op play. And Rockstar. And JRPGs.

Look, we could spend all day highlighting the things I don't care that much for, and come to the simultaneous realization that I'm a loveless curmudgeon, but that doesn't sound particularly fun either. So it is not with a particular passion that I identify Splinter Cell: Conviction as Game of the Week, because I realize many of you _will_ be at least moderately excited, and it's not like I'm going to give the nod to Episodes from Liberty City.

While April remains a pretty dry month for new games overall, this week is probably the biggest of the next few weeks, but don't get lulled into being too relaxed. May is shaping up very nicely.

Splinter Cell's coming out this week? No wonder my apathy meter's been off the charts.

That edit idea is sorely tempting.

LarryC: I had some strawberry cheesecake ice cream last night. It was an interesting combination with the red wine I was currently consuming.

Apparently I'm not too enthralled with Splinter Cell: Conviction either because I thought it was coming out this summer or even later.

I think playing the 360 version of Splinter Cell would go very well indeed with some Edam-cheese flavored ice cream. Excellent combination for some summer gaming!

That dull crawl through the shadows that Elysium describes is exactly what I love most about the stealth genre. It's a shame they have apparently ditched that in Conviction in favor of what appears to be little more than yet another slightly tweaked third-person shooter.

Blah.

Red wine? Blasphemy. Surely strawberry cheesecake ice cream is more properly consumed with coffee or white wine? Especially since we're talking about eating it while playing a stealth-action game.

I think the proper ice cream to pair with red wine is beef ice cream.

I'm just so very very happy right now.

To be sure, by proclaiming an interesting combination, in no way did I mean to suggest it was a wise one. I will take your advice into consideration, so as to assure proper and blasphemy-less consumption of such desserts the next time.

Especially while playing a stealthy adventure, such as the one Splinter Cell: Conviction surely promises.

Stealth is boring. You're boring, stealth.

The only thing worse to me would be a stealth co-op game. I know what I'm not playing anytime soon.

Stealth is awesome and Clemenstation smells like Limburger.

Another vote for awesome stealth being awesome.

Sitting in the corner of a darkened room memorising guard patterns for half an hour before making your move, reaching the end of the level without firing a shot and leaving two dozen black-jacked minions stacked neatly in a closet - brilliant stuff.

That said, I don't think I actually finished any of the Splinter Cell games (doesn't help that they all use Starforce DRM, Ubisoft's previous poison of choice). So I shall not be purchasing this one until I do (and WHEN I do it will be the 360 version for obvious reasons).

Nah, it's better if you don't touch the minions, either. It's all about the timing.

Can we talk about something else, all this stealthy waiting is putting me to slee...

Thief was such a horrible experience for me.

So when does Monster Hunter Tri land?

I played about an hour of Deus Ex. It bored the bejeezus out of me.

April 20th.

It's hard to be stealthy when you reek of cheese.

Which is why it is better to consume this for SC: Conviction:

All the flavor, none of the smell.

Cool you down, too.

I can't wait for Alan Wake to come out so that I can stop hearing about it. The funny/sad thing is that I don't even know what it is, other than a game that never comes out.

Something cheesy that I do not understand is going on in these comments.

I can understand why people who love stealth don't like how SC:C looks. But the idea of a "stealth shooter" greatly appeals to me and this thread is the first I've heard the term. I don't generally like shooters, but what I've enjoyed of Gears of War, Resident Evil 4/5, and Uncharted has been sneaking up on enemies and trying to pick off as many as possible before they notice I'm there. Maybe it shouldn't be called Splinter Cell (I've only played Chaos Theory and can't fairly say), but I expect to enjoy it.

Limburger : feet :: Clemenstation : ?

April is a dry month for me as well. My deal with the stealth genre is the punishment for not doing something exactly as the devs planned on you doing it. Stealth games tend to frustrate me more than any other (I'm also not a patient player so that might have something to do with it)

Blasphemer!

I played all Splinter Cells, but I'm not buying Conviction because of the DRM. Ubisoft's ways must die. And not in a stealthy way.

You forgot the new season of Sam and Max, and for that, I can never forgive you.

Well, OK, I can. If you buy me a beer.

I just realised after looking through the upcoming release schedule for games that there is not a single game coming out for the rest of this year that I'm interested in getting.

If Batman Arkham Asylum 2 and Fallout New Vegas come out this year, then I'll retract that statement.

Wow, and any and every fan of Nintendo is dumbstruck by this. Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid: Other M in the next few months and the new Wii Zelda by the end of the year will pretty much make any fan smile in giddy anticipation.

I also understand there are some out there that no longer are capable of love-ing such games

I'm skeptical that Zelda Wii will actually be out in 2010.

Only stealth-ish game I could ever stand was Arkham Asylum, which dumbed down the stealth elements just enough to be fun.

It's Nintendo. If they haven't firmly set a date, it's not worth guessing.

One can dream, can't he? I mean by the end of the year it'll be 4 years since Twilight Princess.
