Anybody play EVE Online?

I just wanted to note that most evenings, there are 3-7 of us in the GWJ channel. We've got a presence! If anyone is on the fence, wants to try the game, now is a good time.

Presence indeed. I can't seem to sleep anymore.

Just wanted to give an official thank you to all of you more experienced players for helping me out with advice/isk/equipment. It has really set me up in a position to enjoy the game that much more and that much faster. Saying the game has a steep learning curve has become a platitude but that doesn't make it any less true. Thanks again!

*And if you need any small hybrid shells, I bought the blueprints, so they're on the house (to goodjers, at least)!

Hey guys, I've been playing eve for about a month now but still haven't found a good corp to join yet. I'm currently in Forge running Caldari Navy missions, but wouldn't mind doing some pvp or mining for a while. Oh, and could one of you evemail me the password to join the GWJ channel?

Character ingame is Vaerik
thanks.

Decided to give the 14-day trial a try -- you might see me on the GWJ channel as Cidoc. I knew absolutely nothing about what skills to start with so aside from some conscious effort to grab a few of the 'learning'-based skills, they're all over the place. Hope that doesn't come back to bite me later. Thus far been spending my time grabbing books for new skills and doing some mining.

I've been trying to follow the missions, but the third (against ~4 drones) resulted in the decimation of my tiny starter ship, along with everything in my cargo hold. So I'm working on picking up my first "real" ship -- any suggestions? Optimally, I'd like something that was a jack of all trades, master of none. Allowing me to do some mining as well as being able to protect myself if the need arose.

I'll also echo the sentiments of Mont above, the GWJ folks (even in the short time I've been playing) have been nothing but helpful - many thanks to those who've already made the game more enjoyable.

[edit]In case it matters for frigate suggestiongs - I'm Gallente Intaki.

Chum, just about any of the frigates that require lvl 2 or lvl 3 frigate would work for that mission. I just would try and stay away from the navitis because its the mining frigate for the gallente. Load up with light ion blasters, AB and a civilian shield booster and you should be good. For that mission at least. One thing when fighting, always know what your optimal range is and try to stay as close to that as possible, if your closer than that you might have tracking problems, if your further way you start to have distance problems. For fighting, I highly recommend getting two skills: the first is propusion jamming, this lets you use webbifiers which makes tracking much easier. The second is weapon upgrades, this lets you fit damage enhancers which are very useful since they increase you firing rate as well as your damage.

Chum:

Don't worry too much about the 'wrong' skills. Skills never harm you, and never block off any other options, so at worst you're wasting a bit of time training up Science when you'll never use it. (But you never know, might come in handy some day.)

For Gallente frigates, you want the Incursus or Tristan. The former is strictly rails/blasters, the latter rails/blasters with a missile slot or two. Missiles are nice because they don't miss, as long as you're in range.

OTOH, if you really want to be a jack-of-all-trades (not wholly recommended, but flexbility can be useful too) go Minmitar. (no need to reroll your char, just go buy the Minmitar Frigate skill) Their ships are fast, often can be sheild or armored tanked, and often make liberal use of turrets, missiles, and drones. Naturally, they're the hardest to really fly well, since you need to have such breadth to really make the most of them.

Learning skills are always good to start with; a handy rule of thumb is to leave one on overnight, and switch to short-term useful-now skills while you're actually logged in.

Appreciate the advice -- since the Gallente seemed to be the 'headier' type, I haven't done much in the way of advancing any ship/fighting skills beyond what was needed for mining. After a couple days of looking at rocks, however, I don't think it's the life for me.

I might roll up one of the more "aggressive" races to see if that's more of my speed.

Science is required for some of the better class of ORE ships, isn't it?

Every race is agressive, and "who is the best combat race" changes with the nerf bat........ The gallente is now the better pvp race for larger fleet battles at the moment, and they are very decent in the npc hunting as well.

My advice is find a race you are confortable with....... and stick with it. If you find out that you have made a mistake, you can always start training for another ship type/race....

If you are thinking about doing alot of pvp fleet battle style later on, i wouldn't choose Caldari. I know that some ppl disagree with me, but its based on how the game is now.The heavy usage of insta damage guns on battleships at long range(150km+) , that are very popular now, means that Caldari battleships aint that useful. They are however great meatshields(i dont mind that of course) . Scorpion electronic warfare ship is the exeption, but you won't live long then since you will be the first target for the enemy fleet. Expect to die alot if you fly it. However Caldari ships is best for NPC ratting, so like everything else in this game its a tradeoff....

I am a specialized Amaar pilot and i am happy very happy with it..... Lasers 4tw.

One more thing..... When choosing a name in this game choose a name that are down on the alphabet. Players with nicks starting with A-B-C usually is called out as first target in larger fleet battles, because they show up first on the list. Also stay away from the bottom part of the alphabet as the names can be sorted from bottom to top In my corp we just let in a dedicated scorpion pilot with a name starting with AA...... pooor guy

I wouldn't be so quick to reroll Your race only controls two things: how you look, and what stats you have. Your stats, in turn, only control how fast you learn various skills.

Basically, if your stats are relatively balanced (with Charisma a bit lower than the rest), you should be fine. If you want to stop mining, just start buying and training up combat skills. However, if you maxed Charisma (it's by far the least used attribute), you might want to consider it.

Gallente is pretty good. And what Xilo said regarding Caldari is eminently true. Scorpions are primary, blackbirds are secondary. Considering I tend to roll in as an EWar boat in fleet fights, I usually end up dead pretty quick. Tons of fun though and when things go right, I can shut down a huge portion of an enemy fleets firepower.

Other than that, what everyone else said.

Once the tier 3 battleships make it in-game, the Caldari should have a viable railgun platform. Or, so I hope, seeing as I play one.

I haven't been around GWJ in a good couple months now, but I figured I'd pop in again and say that I'm doing the EVE thing again. Played way back in beta, hated the game. (I was running an alliance on DAoC, and just didn't care enough for the drawn out gameplay of EVE at the time) A few years down the line, I've found myself to be a much more relaxed gamer, and very much enjoying EVE.

I've been playing for a bit over a month, and about to hit that coveted (early on, atleast) 1.5m SP mark in another couple days. I'm an Amarr combat focused pilot, and CAN fly up to an Apoc, but stick with Cruisers (My pimped out Omen is painfully fun. Slap a painter, webber, two heatsinks, at cruiser 4 and it's ROF is through the roof.. out DPSes my Prophecy, even!).

I'm a member of RInP - an industrial corp focusing on armaments - that is just starting to move into low sec space for mining. We actually just finished our first war, after being WarDec'd by the Jita Highway Patrol. Camped the bastids out with Board of Twenty though

I'd appreciate an invite to the GWJ chan. Character name is Gaulth.

Golp, there's quite a few pilots in my corp eagerly awaiting the Rokh. Hopefully, it satisfies the need.

Also, sorry for the server shutdowns and forced unscheduled reboots. The SomethingAwful guys (goonswarm) have joined up with RA against us so our blob vs their blob = burning server.

Hah. My corp (RInP) just won a war against a GS alliance member (JHiPS). I hope you show them what's what. I know that GS, namely GF, is already hurting pretty bad over a handful of internal issues. I'd love to see a few of their allied corps melt down.

My trial ran out recently and while the game didn't end up being the right thing for me at the moment, I wanted to again thank all the GWJers for their help. I had planned on sending my 700K in credits to Monty but the game won't let you transfer credits from a trial account (or maybe just over a certain amount?).

(... of course, EVE just aggravated that old MMO scar and now I'm, once again, looking at my WoW account wondering if I'm going to find my fix there ;))

No problem, Chum. If you decide to fire up EVE again at any point, we've started a small (3 of us newbies) corporation and are slowly starting to plan and get our act together. The game seems to slowly unlock its secrets as you gain skillpoints, which is equally relaxing and frustrating.

Like any MMO, it's the people who ultimatly end up making it work. I'm sure I'd still be playing WoW if I had found the goodjer squad before I ended my account.

Just a quick update.. I've officially moved into 0.0. I received an invite to Supremacy, and accepted. Now a member of the Chimaera Pact alliance, part of the Coalition with KoS, -V-, and all of them. I believe two or three of you other Goodjers are in there with me.

If anyone is doing any ratting, PvP, or mining in or around Immensea, feel free to give me a holler, and I'll meet up with you. Char name is Gaulth.

Oh, if anyone also knows of a decent way to make money in 0.0, I'd _REALLY_ appreciate learning. I'm only a 2m SP pilot.. I can fly all Amarr t1 ships, and up to the Ferox in Caldari ships. All of my gunnery skills are laser or missile based, so I really prefer flying Amarr. When I made the move to Immensea, I left all of my ships about 30 jumps back in Amarr Empire space (Left two Omens, a Maller, and a Prophecy).. so right now I'm flying a Caracal, and having a helluva time trying to break the tank of the BS rats. I can take any of them up to about 500k without a problem, but at 500k they rep at the same speed as I deal damage.

I'm about 100k short of being able to buy/outfit/insure an Apoc, and about 70m short of the same with a Geddon. With either of those battleships, I'll be able to rat and make money without a problem. The problem is earning that initial 70-100m without putting my Cara at TOO much risk.

ANY ideas would be a huge help to me. I'm having fun out here, but I hadn't considered how tough it would be to make enough money that I'd be able to start making money quickly.

Well with 2 mil in skillpoint (expect u have around 500k+ in learning) you shouldn't really fly a bs in 0,0 in the first place, since you can't really pilot it yet. You are also going to break the golden rule if you take a BS up there. Do not fly a ship you can't afford to loose. To be brutally honest with you. exept for mining with corp m8s, ninja mining on your own, you do not have anything to do up there.... and you could prob earn more money flying around in empire/low sec.

Anyway for money in 0,0(since i know you didn't like what i said earlier ).....
Mining with corp m8s or by yourself. Rat with corp m8's if they let u..... Let them tank for you, and then you come in to share the isks, gather the loot.

Or you could go back to Empire and earn your cash there. wait a month or 2 and then get back to 0,0, when you have more skills/experience. You can also do some excursions to 0,0 in small fast ships, to learn about the area and how to do pvp, and learn about how your corp/alliance operate.

Yeah, ratting in a pair or a group is a better use of your time. Find a buddy who can deal massive damage while you tank for him. You're caldari. Technically, you should be able to tank 1mil BS spawns with the proper setup on a merlin provided you take can take out cruiser and frig spawns fast. Keep your transversal velocity up, manually if necessary, because straight shield tanking can only do so much when in a frig. Damage-wise, take a friend with a destroyer.

I do that for an accident prone corpmate who loses ratting battleships 20 minutes after taking it out of the hangar. I tank in a hawk (t2 merlin/assault frigate) and my friend in a destroyer with a full set of blasters (preferrably named). The blaster boat will not have enough cap to sustain the blaster barrage but it will have broken the enemy ships tank by the time he has to turn off half of his guns.

I'll see what I can do for you in Immensea. I might just fly out there. As long as CHIMP doesn't mind me ratting with you.

I'd have to agree with the other two people. You really need to find a buddy to rat with. Since your in a caracal you should have any trouble tanking even a 2m bs if your setup well, and with that kind of setup you will still be able to take out the frigates fast enough. If I hadn't gotten podded I'd try and help you out, but as it is it will probably be another 2 weeks till I can get out to 0.0 land again.

Good luck and welcome to the south.

Argh, sorry to hear that Zaque. I've been on sporadically waiting for some long trainings to finish and such, but hopefully, will see some of you on again soon and more frequently.

Sorry to hear about the podding, Zaque. The coalition intel channel is a very big help when going through chokepoints. If you don't know what the channel is, send me an eve-mail. Also, if you decide to go through 7q-, evemail me with a time and I'll scout out for ya. I know it might be a roundabout route to your alliance's space but I think it's a better route.

Well CCP was kind enough to give me my ship back, since I lost it to a crash bug, so that saved me quite a bit of isk. Unfortunately it still looks like it will be two weeks till I can head back out. And fstarta I think I have all the different intel channels up. It sorta was my fault since I stayed at a gate 1 jump out from a camp for too long (ie long enough for an arazu to uncloak and warp scramble/sensor dampen me). Hope to see you down south soon.
