March 1 - March 5

Section:

Everyone has their own individual markers of spring that they dream of in the darkest days of winter as the harbinger of warmth and life in bloom. For some here in the interminably cold north it is the arrival of the first Robin of the year, for others the day when the street sweepers begin their annual cleansing of the salt encrusted roads. For me, it is the week when all the baseball games are released.

It's not that I play baseball, in life real or virtual. When it comes to these games, I simply can not discriminate at the plate between errant pitches or strikes, so I simply swing at everything. I once swung, and I swear to God this is true, at the pitcher throwing to first base. Still it's not what the baseball games are that I care about, but what they represent.

Normally the battle between MLB2K10 and The Show is pretty much all we'd have to talk about this week, but 2010 has proven itself to be anything but tepid and predictable. As you sit and wait for Heavy Rain to work on your PS3 again, you might take out your Sony frustrations with some Battlefield Bad Company 2 action -- though, I'd highly recommend you do so on the 360 or PC.

Bad Company 2 gets my nod for Game of the Week. While Supreme Commander 2 is also releasing this week for those of you with a penchant for RTS games who were not absorbed into the Starcraft 2 beta hive mind, a disappointing demo left me cold, and at this time of the year the last thing I want is more cold.

What would the platform of choice be for BC2 GWJ play?

The GWJ crowd is definitely erring toward the PC for this one. It looks like there will be a solid 360 group though. Just go with whatever you prefer. You should have people to play with either way.

There just won't be as many on the 360 and you won't have a GWJ specific dedicated server to play on.

Edit: Let me put it another way. If people boycott Silent Hunter 5 in a fit of pique over the DRM, then the only thing Ubisoft is going to get rid of is Silent Hunter.

Yeah, but it will just be replaced by one of the other ten or fifteen submarine sims that will be released this year.

The sub sim genre is dying; Silent Hunter's the only franchise left. If you look at the front page of Subsim.com, they're really reaching to try to find games to review and grab attention. If the SH series dies, it'll be as big a blow to the genre as when Microsoft axed the Flight Simulator team.

I'll be sitting it out not on principle, but because I don't want to pay full price for the frustration when Comcast inevitably craps out on me again.

It's so weird that a game company places so much faith on ISP's when it comes to ensure that customers enjoy their singleplayer products.

I mean, everybody understands when multiplayer gaming fails because of a broken connection. But a singleplayer game? That's my resort when I can't get online.

Well, anyone knows good singleplayer board games? At least those only need some sort of light. Doesn't even need to be electrical.

I guess my sarcasm didn't come through. I'm with you. Beggars can't be choosers. Hardcore simulations of any kind were once such a big part of PC gaming, but now it's a niche market.

BC2 on the 360 for me. Great second edition. At first I was wondering about the SP part even tho' I saw some outstanding reviews on it. Reason being it was very little action, and mostly cut-scenes. But that was mostly a back story. Then(!) once you go to South America it rocks. What a luscious environment, good story and fighting. MP is outstanding. Loads of fun. Balanced and rockin'.

I'm with, 'The Show' over on the PS3. Can't say enough about this baseball sim. I just need to see the on-line play to be much improved. Lag, in game comm is iffy for some reason (works just fine in SOCOM and MAG). Lot's of league play stats and commissioner tools, just need to get some folks for play and on-line works. We'll see.

If it does pan out, I fully intend to drag my podcast co-hosts kicking and screaming back into a team based FPS like we used to play in the olden days.

I'm going to guess that so far your efforts on this have failed.

Always bet on pasty white, Thin_J.

I'm going to be picking up Bad Company 2 for pc. Supporting the pc and delivering a (mostly) faithful pc online shooter sounds gratifying.
