Dell 2007FPW question.

(Those of you who have the 2005FPW, feel free to chime in. I don't think it's that different.)

When they say "20.1" diagonal measurement," that takes into account the widescreen-ness, yes? I just had my lovely old ViewSonic A95f 19" flatscreen shuffle off the mortal coil, but it seems to me the 2007 is smaller top-to-bottom than my old one. Am I worrying about nothing?

Also, while I'm on the topic (and too lazy to research myself), what's the difference between the 2005 and 2007?

Yes, the screen is smaller top-to-bottom since it's widescreen, but honestly I didn't really notice it that much when I upgraded. I went from a 21in CRT to the 2005FPW and I didn't feel any loss in screen real estate.

As far as the differences go.. I think there's some improvements here and there (better backlighting, less color bleed, less banding, etc), but it seems the main reason for the new model is the addition of HDCP. It can be argued whether that's a "feature" or an invasion of privacy.

Honestly, I'd stick with getting the 2005FPW as the extra cost of the 2007 isn't really worth it.

-edit-
Oh.. and a note about the measurements. CRT screen measurements almost always include the plastic case, where as LCD screen measurements are of the screen only.

Hold off on the 2007FPW as they do not seem to be as good as the 2005FPW.

I ordered 5 of the 2007 for my office and have had no banding issues at all. The article says its rare and there is a firmware fix (albiet cheezy) so I don't have a problem witht he 2007.

I don't know that that will be an issue; it's just going to be a PC monitor, not a TV or anything (though I may connect my PS2 to it). I don't know that I have anything that outputs HD anyway, but thanks for the heads-up!

I'd been looking at the 2007 because Dell's website doesn't list the 2005 any more (or if it does, I didn't see it).

Don't think its available anymore since the 2007 is a revision of the 2005.

Yeah the banding issue like most internet issues was extremely overblown..

That's all the mighty GG has to say? I sort of expected the full feature-for-feature breakdown and side-by-side of the '05 and '07. :p

The Dell 2005 was my first widescreen PC monitor. I will never go back to 4:3 - it's just much more natural and feels better from my perspective. It's a beautiful monitor and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I liked it so much I layed down some more bucks a few months later and got the 2405.

You play WoW right Razor? WoW looks like hot sex on the 200x at 1680x1050.

Ya, I just don't like the idea of my monitor deciding for me what I can and can't see on it. At the moment it's main use will be blu-ray and HD-DVD movies... but I see a not-so-distant future of PC games attempting to use the technology and seeing a new type of Starforce and lots of internet complaining of people who can't play their game because their monitor thinks it's pirated.

bah.. too small. I did own at one point the 2005FPW and I still use one at work.. but I use the 2405 and the 3007 at home these days.

I did, once upon a time.

You make a good point.

You make a good point. Alas, even though my PC does, my wallet doesn't support the 2407/3007.

I'm starting to wonder if it wouldn't just be better to try and get the newer version of the one I just lost.

You won't be able to buy it directly from Dell.. but there should be plenty of resellers that still carry it.. like these guys. I'm in no way vouching for that company, they were just the first ones that came up in a Google search. There should still be plenty of Dell authorized resellers still carrying some inventory of the 2005FPW.

I'm probably over-reacting a bit to the HDCP stuff. The 2007FPW is probably fine as the HDCP features won't be enforceable for several more years down the road.

You know what's funny, I think Edwin's the one who started the whole Dell monitor craze back in the day. A lot of us Goodjers went bananas for his new 2005 methinks.

Pyro bought his first and we started to talk about it in a speaker thread of all things. Then since I had all these deals coming up I started to um, not spam, yea, them into the forums and everyone went batsh*t.

I just happened to check Dell's website and they're running a sale on the monitors this week. The 2407FPW is $806.00 (regularly $949.00) and the 2007FPW is $344.25 (regularly $459.00). And if you order through the "Home & Home Office" portal you get free 3-5 day shipping.

Well, I couldn't help myself and just ordered a 2407FPW. I secretly snuck the credit card into the computer room, managed to place the order, and put the credit card back without my wife noticing. Mission Complete.

Until the package arrives. Then you become this guy.

I look forward to hearing about your elaborate plan to sneak it in the house. I'd set off the smoke detectors and pretend there's a fire.

"Honey, your monitor looks different... I thought it was beige and bulky."
"No sweetie, I've always had this one."
"No, I could swear it was different."

At this point you should offer to take her to a spa and let her spend whatever money she wants. Distract her, man, distract her!

Thats hilarious.. but something I actually did in the past..

Actually, that's pretty close to the plan, but I have to alter it a little bit and I'm going to come out the hero. It's being delivered to work and should arrive on Thursday or Friday.. and she's going to be out for half the day on Saturday. So getting it in the house shouldn't be too difficult. I currently have the 2005FPW (which I bought back when Edwin coerced half of GWJ to get one) so swapping them out she probably won't notice the size difference. And if she does I'll pull the above and just say "No honey, it's always been like this... it's.. uh.. an optical illusion because of the desk cabinet." Before she has time to give it a close examination, I'll point behind her. Now, we have 2 computers and she's made comments about how crappy the monitor is on her computer (which she uses for internet and email) and eyeing my screen. So, I'll be giving her the 2005FPW and tell her I bought a second one for her as a surprise... and the clincher... it was on sale! The word "sale" just does something to a woman. I'll be golden.

I used to sneak things in all the time. Maybe that's why she's my ex-wife

I think my best sneakage was the $1,000 2x CD Burner (way back in the day). "Oh so you can make CD's? How much did that run you?" Also, a couple monitors, a Playstation, you name it, I was king of the sneakage.

Eh, just tell her you swiped it from work. It's worked for me in the past.

Funny, I did pretty much the exact same thing. My wife's monitor went out, and I had a 2005FPW, so I ordered a new 2405FPW for me and gave her my old one (under the guise of ordering a new monitor for her). She noticed the size difference right away. You wouldn't think it would look that much different, but it does. The thing is huge.

Ya, that's what sh... ah, too easy, nevermind.

Hmm.. this may be a problem. The only thing I have going for me is the computer desk I use is like 20 years old and it has a boxed in area where the monitor fits almost like an entertainment center. My old 21in CRT would only fit inside it if I slid it in from the back. Anyway, since the monitor sits inside this thing, you really don't see it unless you're sitting down to use the PC. This should help disguise the size of the screen... I hope.

I find myself scouring eBay for the 2405 lately. $800 is a little too rich for my blood, but $500 is more my speed. Problem is, y'know, eBay.

Hey, Guru, I bet you've got a spare 2405 lyin' around. Wanna make a brother a deal?

Ya, so it turns out my wife is little more observant than I give her credit for. Admittedly, the size difference from the 20" to the 24" was ginormous. I knew it would be bigger, but not this much bigger. It took her a total of about 5 seconds to notice the difference. So, basically it went like this.

Wife: What the.. (pointing at the screen) What is that?
Me: It's Oblivion.
Wife: Not the game.. the screen.
Me: (trying to play dumb) What do you mean? It's just my monitor. But looky over there what I got you (pointing at the other PC where I put the 2005FPW)
Wife: (glancing at the 2005, then back at mine, the 2005, the 2407) That is your monitor. (pausing, I can see the wheels spinning) You bought yourself a bigger monitor, didn't you?
Me: (high pitched, dead give away) What? Nah...
Wife: Well, it looks very nice. I'm sure your games will look much better and thank you for the old one.
Me: I have no idea what you're talking about.
Wife: (leaving the room, heading upstairs) I'm going to the store.
Me: Okay. (suddenly realizing I had left my wallet upstairs) Wait.. honey, what store?
Wife: I've got your credit card and I'm going to go buy that Sak purse I've been eyeing.
Me: But...
Wife: You should probably stop talking or I'll buy some shoes too.
Me: Yes dear.

In closing.. this monitor was so worth it.

LOL,

Like I said earlier, go and let her spend. It works out in the end for everyone.

Classic!

I "borrowed" a Samsung SyncMaster 920n (19") from work to use as dual monitors till monday. I noticed my 2005FPW is really dim compared to the Samsung.
