Catholics and Sex Abuse

Okay, no for something completely different....

Todays Post reports that the Catholic Church had 783 new claims of sex abuse in 2005. I haven't seen the details of the abuse allegations, but all the ones that have hit the news emphasize Catholic priests abusing adolescent boys.

According to most figures I've seen, adult women are involved in 25% of all sexual abuse cases involving children or young adults. Certainly that is not the 75% that adult men are responsible for, but 1 out of 4 is hardly statistically insignificant. Even more troubling, 86% of abuse survivors were not believed when they reported that their abuser was a woman.

Is sex abuse by nuns the next story about to hit?

You're hitting the anti-religion train today, Paleo!

I doubt this will make much news. The correlation of sexual abuse and domestic violence done by women has historically been ignored by the main-stream press.

I don't know why you would think that of me. Nothing I've said today reflects an antireligious position. Just observations.

I'd be curious to see some details of those claims. My guess is that for many of them, while they may have been new in '05, the alleged abuse occurred long ago. Though the media seems to delight in suggesting otherwise, the Church in the U.S. has cracked down hard on sex abuse. It's taken some parts of the country longer to catch up than others (*cough* Boston *cough*) but out here in the Archdiocese of Seattle there have been aggressive programs in place for more than 10 years for both prevention and victims' aid.

After reading that teacher/student sex thread, I'd think that couldn't be sex abuse by nuns. Why wouldn't it just be "a hot woman teaching a lucky kid about sex" or some such thing?

This nun, I agree with you.

HOWEVER... this nun would probably scar anyone for life.

And stay the hell away from those Gelgamek Catholics.

The Flying Nun was pretty cute.

You like her, Funken? Right now, you really like her?

Man, she can come to my house and give me an oscar worthy performance anytime.

I'd hit it.

The Catholic church is a giant mixing bowl filled with innocent trust and old pent up sexual energy. This figure is not surprising.

Man, I don't know about that. Last I heard the current rate of sexual abuse among Catholic priests was approximately the same as it is among members of any other sort of clergy. It's just the Catholic Church that gets all the publicity due to its uniquely centralized structure and the deplorably corrupt scumbags in positions of authority (like Bernard Law) who were essentially complicit in allowing abuse to occur.

Agreed 100%.

I have no problem with this change.

Wow, Chiggie, you just called people like Kat a pedophile.

The Flying Nun was pretty cute

Lord, that hat is very O'Keefe, ain't it? I mean, WOW!

Wait, how did I get dragged into this?

I don't write in P and C a lot, and this is why. It takes me forever to say what I mean.

Wait a goshdarn minute, here. I am both delicious and easy to make. Stop maligning my good name, sir, or I'll have you with pistols at dawn!

And now the...ah hell, it just isn't as fun with that easy of a setup. You win; guess I'll go back to singing...

"We're whaling on the moon...we carry a harpoon!"

This is an ancient thread, but it seems the closest match to this news item:

German Bishops Cancel Study Into Sexual Abuse by Priests

Apparently, they didn't like the results the investigator was coming up with, so they're shopping for a new investigator that will produce answers they like better.

There aren't enough face palm meme jpgs in the world to cover that.

It's like the Catholic Church is run by the Boy Scouts or something...

These figures are not surprising at all, Priests abusing children are in the news all the time world wide. Didn't the Pope apologise for abusive priests in the Millennium speech and vow to put a stop to it? - or am I making that up?

The bishops basically fired the investigating criminologist because he reused to allow them to veto any findings harmful to the church.

Unbelievable.

As a Catholic, I'd be fine with them issuing a subpoena for the Pope if it means this never happens again.

Two words - Compassionate Rendition.

Maybe they can start selling indulgences again for child molesters, allow them to make some bank while continuing to cover things up. Instead of just pretending it doesn't happen, they can get some cool new robes out of the deal. I mean, if you're going to deny, hide, and actively block things, you might as well really turn a profit, right?

@#$!!!!!

My wife was the family's practicing Catholic and she hasn't insisted that we go to mass in years. This attitude guarantees that she still won't.

Well, obviously the Church can't be at fault. Duh. If the criminologist says it is, then the criminologist is a tool of the Devil.

Only godly criminologists need apply.
