To get in to E3, you have to have an E3 badge in an E3 badge holder, complete with the little security strip that glows under special light, etc.

But I can probably get you some tickets.

Excellent. Do you also have any bridges for sale? I've been in the market for quite some time, but every deal I start to broker seems to fall through on me at the last moment.

So Braehole isn't Bill Harris? Damn... there goes my box in the pool.

Please tell me they give you a full cavity search too....I mean, that's a lot of security.

I don't recall one, but maybe I've repressed those memories. They do search and tag handbags and backpacks prior to entry. In reality, the place was often such a zoo that the badges didn't always get examined carefully. Still, it's not the kind of place you'd be able to sneak into easily.

Please bear in mind that E3 is a TRADE SHOW. It is not meant, nor is it allowed that the general public to be involved. I don't say that out a sense of elitism... it's just the truth.

For the most part, there are playable demos of some games and huge noisy booths with a limited amount of promo items. If you want to see the good stuff (high profile games) you'll need to have credentials, and an appointment. Maybe... just maybe... then you'll get some good swag.

Sure, lots of people get in that aren't really in the industry. I just know that in recent years, the good stuff is available by appointment only.

While the game playing experiences on the floor can be pretty lousy, in large part because of the deafening background noise, there's some great stuff to be found if you're willing to poke around, ask questions, and sort through the hype and garbage. Last year, I found that plenty of the games on the floor were staffed by actual development staff, rather than the Vanna White retail customer service types. I had some great conversations with artists, level designers, etc. on games like Indigo Prophecy, Hellgate: London, Condemned, Full Auto, Call of Duty 2, Starcraft: Ghost, the latest Myst game, etc.

And I just sold all my Swag on ebay anyway.

Man the fly is screwed now. He's going to get like 50 pm's after saying that so just so everyone knows he was only talking to me!

So it turns out that I managed to get ahold of a bridge just this morning, but it really isn't working out -- maintenance is taking way too much time. So I'm looking to resell it at a drastically reduced price. Are you interested, Braehole? It is only very lightly used.

Not to give anyone ideas but.....

E3 is incredibly easy to sneak into if you live in the area. Actually this holds true for any convention.

First, make up a company name.. electronic rental companies work great. because everyone needs computers or TVs and such. Then make some shirts and hats with your company logo on them, and wear black Dickies and black tennis shoes with the shirts. Make some hard plastic badges with your company logo and fake names on them along with your picture. Carry some cables and possibly a dolly with a few computer cases and monitors.. Go to the convention site early (around 7am) and look for a teamster. Ask said teamster where the labor trailer is, and that you need to get your wristbracelet to load some equipment in. Once at the labor trailer, look around for the exposition service in charge and remember their name, (either it's GES or Freeman in the western US). Go to a security guard on duty and tell them you are here to unload some equipment in that hall. Peek in and see a booth and name that company. The security at the freight door that early is usually a senior citizen and is still on duty from the previous night and is tired as hell. If they give you sh*t about not having your wristbracelet tell them " Look man I just wanna drop this stuff off, the booth is right there" and usually they will waive you in if you promise to hurry up. Go inside, walk towards the booth but look lost. Once inside, walk the aisles for a while then ditch the cables and crap somewhere secure and hide in the bathroom until show opens.
Don't bother changing clothes because the more teamsters and security see you during show hours and setup, the more like it seems you belong there and you can do the same thing each day.

Now, if I were going to sneak into a trade show.. that's how I'd do it.

You should write a book on how to bust into E3.It will sell like hotcakes.

Oookay.. so I just got my confirmation packet..and booth assignments.
Who's still going this year?

It's like Hitman, but possibly without killing.

For you experienced E3 goers, is that event really worth attending at least once? I am on the east coast, so the thought of paying a plane ticket and taking days off just for it seem too much for an event like this.

If you aren't friends with any developers, or going as part of a press group (press pass), then it wouldn't be very entertaining. The best stuff is only shown behind closed doors, typically, most of the time by appointment only!

I remember playing Dungeon Siege, and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance on the floor. There were also lots and lots of scantily clad females (which they've toned down now). Overall, it was extremely noisy and crowded.

I went in 2001, and while it was kinda cool, it ended up just being a pretty expensive vacation.

Uhhh, thanks for the quick explanation Tyrian, looks like I wouldn't be able to get much out of the event anyway.

I can't hit E3 this year since I'm going to be in China but if you guys would like to meet outside the confrence, I have a layover in LA before I connect to Taiwan. I'm thinking In & Out burger!

You'll get more and see more out of E3 from home reading all the coverage. Every year there's a handful of games I'm told look amazing that I didn't even see. These days there's video of people playing damn near everything on the floor eventually, it saves you the sore back and steep costs

Does that mean there will be a lot of E3 video coverage GWJ style too (oh God, please let it be true )

I should have near real time photo and video coverage of E3 as I walk the floor.. still working out the kinks

woooo, that would be nice. I just hope there will be some good material that warrant the time and effort that you will have to put in for your coverage. Maybe with less booth babes, E3 will actually focus on more game stuff this time around.

Yowsa. Who's your daddy?
