Web spell checker?

Here's what I'm hoping for: Let's say I'm typing a post and I'm not sure how to spell a word. Is there something out there I can have in a toolbar or something where I can type in the word and find out if it's spelled right? Or is there some kind of spell checker for the whole post? Does anything like that exist? For reference, I use Firefox. Thanks!

Well, Google toolbar has a Spellchecker feature that integrates with Office spellcheck function.

Besides, you can always check the individual words by Googling for "define: myword" which brings up a dictionary entry for that myword, or makes a spelling suggestion if it can't find one.

Color me slow. I seem to have the Google toolbar, but I can't figure out how the Spellchecker thing would work...

Well, I did figure out one thing. I didn't have the Google toolbar you were talking about, I just have some little Google search thing. My wife's computer has the full toolbar with the spell checker and all. I'll probably cave in and slap that on my Firefox... at least once I figure out how to do that...

Why don't you just pull up dictionary.com? There's also a program out there called IE Spell, which you can activate from a menu command when you right-click.

I used IE Spell (it also integrates with Office spellchecking function), but it has not been updated for a very long time. I think the current version doesn't work with IE6 and SP2...

I just noticed that the new Google toolbar has a spellcheck in it.

I used to use Spellbound but it only works with 1.0+ and has not been updated to be compatible with 1.5 yet.

I don't know if it's the skin I use for Firefox or not, but when I click on the G in the little search bar it gives me the option to add other search engines. One of my search engines is "The Free Dictionary".

You can still use spellbound with 1.5. You just have to install Nightly tester tools to trick firefox into using older (or newer) extensions that are not yet on the compatibility list.

Thanks for that link. However, my past experience has shown that plugins that are not designed for a particular version of FF tends to be problematic even if you get it installed. I will give this one a try though.

Windows doesn't have a system wide spellchecker utility?

In Mac OS 10.4, I just right click on any word in any native Mac app (not in Java Runtime Environment or X11 apps, that is) and it offers spelling suggestions if the word I am typing is misspelled. Or, I can hover over any word and hit the key combination command-control-d and it brings up a little dictionary/thesaurus window, like in the following picture:

I mention this not to point out how slick the Mac OS is (okay, maybe just a little bit) but rather to say that a similar system wide utility must exist for Windows, at the very least as a shareware add-on. Right?

Now that is cool. If it exists, we need to find it. If not, I need to code it.

I use spellbound on Mozilla 1.7.12, and I lurves it.

I shall cheer for you from the sidelines and wait with baited breath!

I have used if for months without problems. I just tested with the latest FF 1.5.0.2 and everything seems to still work fine.
