Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Game Stories and Spoilers

Lobster, Montalban, do you remember if the corpses were labeled with actually names, or just generic titles like thief, bandit, or beggar?

Adanrel. Female high elf in the slums of the Imperial Waterfront district. I don't remember ever talking to her before she died. I guess one way to ruin the mystery is load an old save game before she's dead and talk to her or see if she was even around. But that just ruins the mystery.

Truth is, it's tough out here on the streets. Scratching out a living. "This is the Imperial City. People get mugged coming home every day of the week. Sometimes. Sometimes things just go bad." /movie quote

Heh, well there goes my theory. Or at least the "no named characters" part of it. Very interesting indeed...

Yeah that make sense zero. I don't know enough about RAI to see just how random it can be, but the fact that the dev mentioned that they have to tune it down, implies that they were aware of the possibilities of the more "extreme" scenerios, and have made corrections to prevent those scenerios from happening.

As for player induced killing, I wonder if it is possible to "plant" stolen goods on the npc? Also, are there "charm" spells that can be casted on npcs?

As per magical Trevor's instructions, I go back to the village center and speak the enchantment. Just as I finish reciting the spell, my vision briefly flashes red and I stagger ever so slightly. After a quick glance around, I can see (actually see) the villagers, so I know that the spell worked. However, after looking at my stats, I noticed that my luck was down permanently from 50 to 5, and that my intelligence had taken a 5-point hit! The bastard had cursed the spell, and I was on the receiving end!

It's a good thing that my assassin has an interest in Alchemy (poisoned arrows rock!), since I was able to whip up a few potions of Restore Luck once I got to the Imperial City (cost me a few hundred to get the right ingredients though). I also made a few Detect Life potions while there, so that son of a Female Doggo is going to wake up with an arrow in his throat for what he did to me.

I got out of the sewers a night, so I was wandering around blindly looking for the guy in the monastery (before I understood the compass icons) and I bumped into something in an open field that went "Ooof!" Then he starts telling me about his village. On the way into the ruins, I was jumped by 3 or 4 critters; I fought them off, and noticed that invisible things actually can be seen by a slight "vibration" in the air and the movement of grass. I got the counterspell, used it and saved everyone. But my luck was reduced to 28.

So, not long after that, I hit Bruma, trotted into the chapel and spent a few moments in quiet contemplation at the main altar. Boom! Stats back to normal.

There are many, many ways to deal with situations in this game. I love it.

No. Tried that. At some point I was walking around Charrol, at night, and got curious what was in one of the fancy houses. So I snuk in rummaged around a bit. I was almost overloaded on weight so I left all their silverware alone (with a mental note to self on the quantity of it around :)). Eventually ran into the owner of the house, sleeping in his bed, with a full set of Steel armour on (sans helmet). I could use his greaves, gloves, and boots, so I helped myself to them... very carefully. The thing was, I was overloaded by the time I was done undressing him. I was afraid that if I drop stuff to the ground it'll make noise and wake his naked ass up. So I figured I'll just dress him in my old armour. Unfortunately that didn't work. Eventually I had to drop some stuff and luckally he didn't wake. Kindda wish I could dress people up, in their sleep. Maybe even while they are awake.

Can you imagine what awesomeness it would be if you could swap the clothes of an arch-mage right off his back, while he's standing there, and dress him in a pink skirt? Haha... oh wait... he already wears a skirt. Never mind.

You, my friend, need the "Unburden" or "Feather" spell. I think you have to have a 25 in alteration, but you can add 50 or so pounds to your carrying capacity for a long enough time for your magicka to regenerate to the point where you can cast the spell again. So basically, a 25 in alteration equals an extra 50 pounds of loot whenever you need it.

... just be careful about using it when you are in a combat situation. Nothing is worse than having two guys bearing down on you when your feather spell wears off, and you are too low on magicka to cast it again...

Skingrad: Horrible name, cool town

One thing I like about the game is that cities and towns arent built on a perfectly level plane. You have nice hills and stuff that the city is built around, giving each a lot of character.

Has anyone tried a necromancy type character yet? Im considering a new one since my current one was built around influencing people and it turns out the persuasive mini-game bugs the hell out of me The old TES games let you only summon one creature at a time. That's still true right?

Whoops, I'm a vampire, ran into some vamps in a ruin. If you're fighting vampires and you notice a thing about a "disease" pop up, cure disease within three days or you're stuck with it. It's.... interesting.

You can feed on sleeping people to avoid really looking like or suffering any real penalties. Day-light sensitivity and people not wanting to talk to you being among the more nasty issues, weakness to fire being another. Interesting bit is that if you feed on a sleeping person, you go back to being more or less normal with some fire weakness and a couple stat boosts. You can still function in the world (and during the day) for up to 24 hours after you feed. Then you starting turning into more of a vampire again.

There are benefits though, new powers and abilities are available as you get more monstrous. Again, once you feed, you revert back to mostly normal.

So because I ignored this disease message, I am now a creature of the night and I have to suck blood to avoid being shunned. Fun! Not sure if I'm going to load an old save and go back to being normal.

Let me know what you think after having it a while. I've read about it, and was thinking that sooner or later I might want to give it a try. I'm just not sure if I want to make a long-term committment. I'm wondering if somewhere, somehow, there's a cure?

I'm not reading the details of what Certis posted because at this point I don't want to know them, but I have to think that there is a cure. It is probably very hard to find and take advantage of, but there must be one. (If I remember correctly, that was the case in Morrowind...)

Wow, interesting stories guys. So moonDragon, if you drop something on the ground they will make a sound depending on what it is? (nice!)

How about if you just put the item that you stole into their inventory? I mean when you perform pickpoket on some npc, don't you get access to his/her inventory?

Zero, I think there is definitely a cure for vampirsim. Though in Morrowind i never could find such cure, and basically got stuck out in the open during the day

I've actually been attacked by named characters out in the middle of nowhere. Poor Alonso.

Right now I'm on this one quest with this Orc Knight in dwarven armor but I think the quest might be broken. She tells me to go to this ruin on Middas after Midnight. The quest says any day between midnight and 6 AM. But for a whole week I wandered around and inside those ruins but the guy I'm supposed to kill never showed up. So I left the Orc outside the dungeon and occasionally I go back to check on her and find a few more unnamed bodies lying about.

Im a little suprised how ruthless the guards are. I did a quest for a paranoid guy and after I drained most of his money by playing into his paranoid delusions, and he asked me to kill 3 innocent people, I turned him over to the guards saying he needed to be arrested. The guard captain immediately sprints around the cathedral and hacks the guy to pieces without so much as a 'Halt!'

I guess I expected an arrest, even if the two just immediately disappeared so that I could think to myself, "Well at least the paranoid guy is safely behind bars now" No, now I get to look at his rotting body and hope no NPC ever suggests I should be 'arrested' with minimal evidence of why.

Have any of you run into the other "adventurers" in a dungeon yet? They're supposed to be rare, but I've already met one. I was too weak to actually follow him around inside the dungeon. I would have been slaughtered. But when I'm stronger I plan on following them to see what they actually do.

Hehe, is anyone here actually following the main quest line?

I did the mission after giving the amulet to the priest, closed the gate and I tread briefly into the city to try and recapture it, but after 3 tries and getting butchered every time, I've been deflected and am now doing whatever suits me in and around Skingrad

I've no desire so far to even start the main mission. I've been hanging around Leyawiin for quite some time now and have become co-owner of a hunting lodge with an orc who I can't help but think of as Fiona. Nearby there's a Khajit town, sounds like Lobster's nightmare. Also Edwin may just be a closet Daedra worshipper. I found a shrine to Sheograth(sp) where apparently pants are not the norm.

The Thieves Guild is too fun. I can't wait to meet the Grey Fox. Thief trick: Whenever you come across a new town, break into the dungeon/jail. Drop a few lockpicks in the larger jail cell. It's always easier to break into prison than to break out.

i killed jearl in her home in bruma. as i was trying to pull one of my arrows out of a watermelon i picked the watermelon up by accident. immediately upon setting foot outside i was arrested for theft. 4 gold fine.

I didnt even have the watermelon on me at that point! I broke into a lady's house and killed her in her sleep!

That made me chuckle.

Nope.

Tonight I was jumped by three hot women in a farmhouse and later killed a blind swordsman. I love coming back to the lodge and throwing his dai-katana (from the mysterious continent of Akivar no less) in the keepsake pile next to the giant skull. The Elder Scrolls universe rocks.

Speaking of "Hot" NPCs, does NPCs have different body types? Or do they all look the same with the exception of the faces?
Also, how about posting some of your Character's sexy faces? Did any of you try that facegen thing to put your own face in the game? (Fess up now! )

Are there any point-to-point quests in the game? Every one I've been on so far has taken about 5 steps to complete.
** Spoilers below **
Example: Merchant in Imperial City wants another merchant to join the WTO. Other merchant won't join, because he sells cheap like Sanford & Son. So, I follow said merchant one night to see what he's up to. He meets with a shady character, and they discuss the next "shipment". Now I have to follow shady guy. Shady Guy goes to his house. Now, I have to get into his house and check it out. Fortunantely, I'm a great thief, and he doesn't notice that I lifted his cool enchanted sword, house key, and gold from him while he's walking down the street.
So, I open the door to his house using the stolen key, steal everything that's not nailed down, and notice that he's been robbing graves, and, like all good criminals, keeps excellent records of what he's desecrated lying in plain sight. Now that I have the record book, I have to take it back to Sanford & Son's and tell the merchant that he sees dead people('s clothes). He claims to know nothing about it, but tips me off that shady guy might be grave robbing right now.
With that information, I head to the graveyards in Imperial City, and notice that a crypt has been left open. I confront shady guy, and he informs me that his evil plan all along was to get me to the crypt to kill me. Shady guy also brought a bodyguard along. What shady guy hasn't yet realized is that I stole his sword, so he attacks with his fists, and I make short work of him. Bodyguard proves to be a little tough, be he falls to the sword eventually. With both of them dead, I grab shady guy's shovel and present the evidence to the head of the WTO. Quest completed. I get 200 gold and an enchanted ring.

It took me most of last night to complete that one.

I guess I expected an arrest, even if the two just immediately disappeared so that I could think to myself, "Well at least the paranoid guy is safely behind bars now" No, now I get to look at his rotting body and hope no NPC ever suggests I should be 'arrested' with minimal evidence of why.

Sounds like Mr. Noid resisted arrest.

If you're in the mage guild, don't steal from another mage. Or at least, don't get caught. I did, and had my guild privileges revoked--which means I can't complete any half-finished mage quests. I had to go talk to a guild leader in the main city (I forget the name), and now in order to restore my membership I've got to collect a bunch of pretty rare herbs. I spent hours traversing wilderness last night and still have only 1/4 of what I need. I'm having a blast looking, though...making tons of amazing discoveries. I'm also getting gagillions of herbs unrelated to the quest.

Couldn't you just steal the fancy herbs from the various Mage Guild shelves and cases?

Oh, wait...

And you'll make a crap ton of gold from selling the potions you make from those incredients. I've stopping looting low quality equipment from random bandits in the world because the inventory space is much better spent on potion ingredients.

What's the deal with the Oblivion gates? I know there are a certain number associated with the main quest, but it appears that there are tons more that open throughout the countryside. I've encountered several. I found one seemingly random one last night, totally by surprise (spoileriffic story):

I found an isolated farmhouse--in the middle of nowhere. I went in, heard some noises from upstairs, and was then attacked by two angry bandits when they charged me on the staircase, which left me jittery. I poked around the house a bit, then left...and as I did, HOLY CRAP an Oblivion gate opened right behind me, directly where the house had been! The house was reduced to flaming ruins, the sky was that creepy stormy blood red, and there were nastly little scamps all over. It totally unexpected and very, very cool. I eventually went into the gate, and had to work my way through three Daedric citadels, activating machinery to extend some bridges between them, to get the sigil stone and close the gate. It took about 30-45 minutes just to get the gate closed, but once it was gone, the original area was back to normal...the house was still on fire, but the sky was blue again.

Anyway, it was a pretty amazing diversion. I'm wondering, are the interiors of all these Oblivion gates different? Is each one, in a sense, its own unique dungeon? If you don't close a gate you've found, does it stay open forever, or does it close, and open again later, or open somwhere else?

I got my first chance to hunt a deer on Wednesday night. Stalked a doe along the beach to the west of the City until my first arrow sent her racing away, tail up. Being (relatively) fleet of foot, I could stay within bowshot, but the last arrow I owned was already nocked, waiting for the opportunity to finish the kill.

The doe rounded the corner of a ruin and jumped from the crest of a small hill into the lake. By the time I reached the rise, she was struggling onto the far bank of the cove. It was here that I released that last arrow, striking her in the flank, but still she strugged on.

At the bank of the river, she turned to face me. Exhausted, I assume. But there was no fear in her eyes. I finished it quickly with a single stroke of my blade.

If only I could have offered the body of that noble creature as a sacrifice to the Gods of the Hunt...

So I've got a specific question about a quest.

This will contain minor spoilers about something you can do in Chorrol very early in the game, so skip over this if you don't want to know about that sort of thing.

I'm trying to help the countess figure out who stole her painting.

*** MORE SPECIFIC SPOILERS FOLLOW ***

I've talked to everyone, I've found the suspicious painting in the West tower, and I've found the painting supplies in the Redguard woman's room, but it seems that I still need to find more evidence before I can accuse her of being the thief. (I think she stole it because she wants to replace it with a better representation of the countess' late husband.) Has anyone finished this quest? If so, can you give me some pointers as to where I might find the last bits of evidence? I've scoured the entire castle, including all the towers and the barracks...

Thanks!

She mentioned that she went into the dining room before going to bed. You might want to check in there (room next to the countess' thrown) and more specifically... look down.

Thanks Vega!
