Dell Widescreen Deal Days are upon us!

I'm sorry Gameguru, I didn't mean to churn your comment up to something more than it was. However, my blood just has a tendency to boil about technologies like HDCP.

The people responsible for DRM technologies lost my trust a long time ago. What you say is true (well, hopefully it is true); HDCP isn't going to prevent current display technologies from working as they currently do. However, that doesn't change the fact that the entire purpose of such technologies is misguided and a total slap in the face of consumers (not to mention that they completely fail to acheive their stated goal of hampering piracy). So while HDCP may not be comparable to rootkit installing CDs from Sony or system crashing copy protection tools from Starforce on a technical level, I have reached the point where it makes me every bit as upset anyway.

While it is certainly possible that I'm overreacting, all of these things smack of a complete lack of vision and a total lack of respect for the people who these companies are hoping will buy their products. It truly frightens me that this idea has taken such hold and received so much acceptance in the business world, and I don't like where I see it heading.

Blegh, I'm just going to go mope over at the EFF's website now.

Well...get used to it.. because eventually there wont be a single video card or monitor sold that wont be HDCP complaint in some shape or fashion.

Because simply the mass consumer will view it as a buzz term and it would be marketing suicide to NOT include HDCP support.

In your TV's also.. and your DVD players.. Recievers.. etc.. etc..

edit

I should add I despite DRM as much as anyone.. mostly because it prevents us from doing MORE than we can with technology. It's holding back innovation more than anything.

I dont own the Apple one so I cant comment on that.. but the 2 30" Dell's I got were pretty much substandard.. I found they ghost more than my 24" Dell's and while I accept some light bleeding the amount of light bleeding on the 30" was even more pronounced..add to that with very bizzare color rendering across the entire panel...the left side Blue's where different from the right side Blue's

Given their price and lack of inputs I'd much rather at that point get 2 24" LCD's

Yup, thanks to your advice GG it helped sway me from a 30" purchase. The lack of inputs really cripples the monitor (seeing how the lower end models have way more options). Now I see why they would do this, but it ends up screwing the customer.

Oh, I know. My new TV has an HDMI port that I will no doubt be using once the PS3 comes out.

I realize that complaining about it on this forum is about as effective as trying to put out a raging forrest fire by taking a leak on it, but I still can't help but say something. At the very most I might get a few people to browse over to the EFF's website in order to get a bit more informed about this and other such issues.

Ah, what is a young idealistic idiot to do in this world, eh?

All fine and dandy, but:

How is the UltraSharp 2005FPW 20.1-inch for gaming? I don't do ghosting.

Sorry guys, for the derailment.

Zero, my questions about HDCP were not rhetorical. I really had no idea what the whole point of HDCP was, since the first two links from a Google search talk about what it is and its capabilities, but not about its applications.

Now I have a better understanding of why a person would want to pay more for a display that supports HDCP.

Thanks to GG, Zero, and Pyro for clearing it up.

Better than s3x with gawd.

But then again the ghosting I get does not bother me.

Dead sexy in WoW and with the 360. And I'm picky. Some minor blacklight bleeding with just a blank screen (think Windows default screen saver) but other than that, it's perfect.

Any feedback for faster-moving FPS games, like BF2?

It's hard to say. I haven't had a CRT for a while. If there is any blurring, it can't be that noticeable or else I would distinctly remember it. Half Life 2 (PC) at 1680x1050 looked stunning in motion, and GRAW (360) looks amazing.

If you're thinking there might be ghosting a'la the PSP or cheaper LCD's, that definitely not the case.

Dell may have a better price but my Gateway 21" is so much better than the Dell that I would recommend it for any in the market.

I'm with you on this one... and somewhere in these forums I think I posted a link (to a Wired article?) where the author was writing about how HDTV is going to screw the consumer and how Congress is implementing the HDTV rollout the way they usually do legislation, which is letting the lobbyists write it.

Being a techno-geek I wasn't aware that HD had a downside, but I've come to find out it's all pretty much loaded with DRM...

I'm all for content creators getting their share, it's the bureacracy involved in DRM that I'm not a fan of...

Sorry, but Ill stick with my Viewsonic va902b 19" for $270.

Great picture (brightness and colors) and fast response (8ms)

Native res 1280x1024

I just went to newegg and learned that it is now $255!

Yeah, but... widescreen.

I'll throw in my 2 cents for the 2405fpw. WoW and BF2 at 1920x1200 is the cat's meow, especially on 24" of real estate. Crisp colors, fast response, and extremely bright. I'd almost think 30" would be too big unless you were sitting a little further away from it.

Plus, like Negman said, widescreen.
