Mount and Blade

I've stalled on this game recently. But after about 30 hrs I feel like I've got more than my money's worth out of it.

Looks like another one that I will have to check out as well. Thanks for the links and info...

I played it for several multi-hour sessions over the weekend; I liked some aspects of it, but not others.....the "tactical" battles were out-of-control- just a hack'n'slash melee where the only thing that really appeared to matter was numbers. Klutz that I am, I could *not* control a horse, so I gave up and just did the game dismounted.

I fully realize that it is a "pre-beta"- I'm guessing- but man, is it unforgiving; I'd do really well, then BAM! I'd get hit by two bands of raiders/bandits/deserters back-toback and all of my guys would be dead and I'd have nothing left but the shirt on my back. Didn't like that so much.

I did find the skillsets very interesting- putting points into Inventory Management; Tactical Control, etc. was pretty innovative.

I think I'll probably uninstall it, wait a couple months as they continue to work on it, then try it again in a more fully functional form.

If you thought mounted combat wasn't very good or at least not particularly easy, you should really try it again and take a few levels of horse riding. That, plus a better horse, make it an entirely different experience. I think it's actually one of the things that put folks off about the game... it feels like the early mounted combat is poorly done, instead of merely difficult. With a 3-4 skill and a matching horse, you should mow through troops... just avoid water, because mounted troops in water lose almost all their advantages in M&B.

As for the wipeout effect, that's a definite issue, one that I could write off as "realistic". Annoying all the same. Taking the pathfinding skill will help outrun pursuers, but really, if you don't have all or nearly all mounted troops, staying very near cities is really your best option. Also make sure to load your non-mounted troops early in the fight order, both to preserve mounted troops and pick up some speed by losing slower moving foot troops.

Holy cow, I just came back to check this thread after Certis' link reminded me of it. God I love M&B. And imagine my surprise to find another Goodjer from Westerville. Small world.

Well - I did pick it up. (and paid for it)
I'm glad you guys mentioned this things about mounted combat because I ended up fighting on foot.
Using a bow or crossbow is very efficient unless the opponent has shield... which again I guess is realistic. (if we can talk realisme in computer games)
Thanks for the tip. I hope they will finish this game.
There is obviously a rare talent(s) behind this one.

Hi all,

Just wondering with the updates (eg v0.630 and 0.632), do you have to have already paid for the game in order to be able to use them? Am still in the very initial stages of playing the game (work & real life are interfering at the moment), but enjoying it so far. Will probably end up buying it though.

Just curious, my last post says I'm a coffee grinder(!), not in Payroll as per my ID. Anyone know why?

Anyone know why?

As you post more your tag becomes more prestigious. When you reach 1000 posts you get a special custom tag chosen by the members of this community. Sorta like a right of passage but more spanings.

And I doubt the update affects your ability to demo the game... it's level restricted if I remember correctly.

Some new screenshots up at the Tale Worlds site.

Might have to fire this up again after the next update. Whenever that is.

I'm glad you posted, Druid, otherwise I would have never noticed this old thread. I'll have to check it out when I get broadband next week.

The developer said the new patch (which brings in more specific troop commands ((You can select JUST ranged/melee/mounted troops)) a few bug fixes, and some other unspecified content) would be released "in the next week or two" just over two weeks ago.

He also mentioned that they might be adding a bit of extra content, which could push the new version back by an extra few weeks.

Still, excellent game. It's given me far more enjoyment for $14 than most any game I own, barring the elder scrolls trilogy, FO1&2, DE, SS2, and the Ultima series... and for me to even MENTION an independent game that's not even fully released yet in the same breath as games like those is a pretty impressive thing.

Yeah, this is a fun game. I've got an article brewing, so that's all I'll say for now.

I think they need to focus on the quest/things to do department. I don't want to get too up in arms about it, but after a certain point, you're just roaming around jumping groups that stand a good chance at killing quite a few of your troops with little to no chance at even equipment upgrades. It'd be neat if freed prisoners reverted to their alignments and you got some sort of recognition for freeing them, for instance.

By the way, does anyone else who play fear crossbowmen more than dark knights? Does that seem right?

If you're getting burned out on vanilla M&B, check out the mods. The best place to find the good ones seems to be the official forums. I've been playing around with the Hundred Years War mod, it's pretty cool.

.730 is out.

A few very nice additions. A few objects appear to have been re-rendered. Grass and the such is now rendered as invidiual objects, which is a nice effect but can be VERY hard on your system at times. Castle sieges were added, which are incredibly fun - you can also take over the two siegable keeps now and man them, which can result in some pretty spectacular battles (see: Helm's Deep). You can now select your troops based on attack type (melee, ranged, mounted, etc) instead of giving blanket orders which is GREAT in the tougher battles (Mounts - Charge, Melee - Stay with me, Ranged - Hold position!). All of the towns are now 3d, but you can still navigate via the text menus AFTER you've gone into the various buildings in the towns. You can now kill/knock out NPCs in towns. Player models have all been improved slightly. A small handful of weapon/armor changes.

I'm sure there are a few changes that I'm missing, but overall this patch was a significant one. Far better than the last two. It's really added quite a lot of content to the game. Two new developers have been added to the team (which previously consisted of the game's creator and his wife), and I know that atleast one of them worked on the new content - specifically the graphics updates.

Over all, I'm very pleased with this patch. I haven't come across any game breaking bugs or balance issues yet. The only annoying thing I've run into is trouble recruiting the horse thief (Borscha, I believe). I haven't been able to get him in my party yet, and I'm not particularly sure why.

Ooooh, aaaah! Thanks for the heads up - for some reason in-game "latest version check" doesnt yet see the latest patch, i`ve been clicking that button every three hours for the last couple of days

I downloaded it on a whim and installed it just before I planned to go to bed yesterday morning. I then proceeded to play the classic "just one more turn" until I was 4 hours past my bedtime. I hit level 6 just before last coming into to work last night and broke out the credit card to make the purchase.

I played 3-4 characters and the only time I had problems getting him was when I didn't have 50 gold to give the Lord, the game crashed to the desktop the one time I tried.

Yummy. DL'd and installed, I'll get to it once I get back from work.

I believe the reason it doesn't show up on the version check is because it's a beta release. I'd guess that's sort of a new policy as I don't remember ever seeing the word beta show up in the version line before, even when I was following the boards and grabbing the releases without checking for them in game.

Well I upgraded to the beta version and now I can't seem to get Borscha to join too.

Found a fix on the official boards.

Finally bought this a couple of weeks ago and agreed - it's pretty fantastic and definitely money well spent. I actually haven't played the vanilla game, I'm completely addicted to the Lord of the Rings mod -- The Last Days. It really makes a difference making mountain goblin raids over river pirate rates. I just hit level 10 the other day and am finally able to start fighting the uruk hai of Isengard without getting completely destroyed.

Duff, has the TLD mod been updated for the new version yet? Sieging keeps would be such a great addition to the mod that it might sway me to actually give it a try.

This is the best thread resurrection ever. Thanks, I just found a new addiction.

*ouch* Tuesday, and a Tuesday off at that just went down the drain playing mount and blade.

Much fun, but I've got to learn how to hit things from horseback. It does have that continual-challange-addiction-factor. A good game, especially for being fun to play, not just to beat.

Oso,

I loved M&B initially, but after a few days with the game (after learning how to use horseback archery and axe throwing properly, and learning how to score couched lance damage regularly) it got that much better.

Couched lance damage rocks. I`m playing a deadly nun who brings insta-death to almost everyone with her bloody lance. Requires great precision and good horse, though, especially if you`re up against anything in saddle.

I had never really checked out mods, are they any good?

Sorry, forgot to link to the fix. One problem I've found with the fix is that if you've already initiated a discussion with Borcha this fix will not work. One bonus to this fix is that you need not have the 50 gold required to spring him.

Don't know if the Last Days has been updated with the new...update..or not. Sieging Helm's Deep, which is in the mod, BTW, would be so amazing. But I'm kind of afraid to update out of concern that the mod might not be playable at all.
