I have recently increased my regular dosage of zombie apocalypse daydreams due to some recent outside forces. One of the biggest being Stephen King's Cell which I am half-way through. While fantasizing about living in a post zombie society I started to wonder about the validity of purchasing a shotgun incase the hopefully inevitable happens and I am aloud to "defend" myself against hordes of the undead.
Make no mistake, this is the only reason I wish to own this weapon. I love to skeet shoot but where I go to shoot they already have guns. I have no urge to hunt any of nature's creatures. I don't even feel the need to own one to defend my home and loved ones from burglars or trespassers. That's what "stealth mode" and putting points into backstab are for. I just simply think the humor of it added to my life would both satisfy and amuse me to no end.
Again, no children in the house, wouldn't keep it loaded, might not even keep shells for it, but just have it. Maybe with "The End is Nigh" carved into the stock. I most likely will not buy one, because I really have absolutely no need for a shotgun, but, the urge is there. To have one. For the zombies...or, or aliens. I will tell you this; I DO own a shake-up flashlight, crank powered radio, compass, hunting knife, and am going to pick up a road atlas tonight. These items can be helpful in any dire situation but in the back of my head I know why I pick them up. Z-Day.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever had a bizarre urge like this and if they've ever acted on it.
In my opinion, there can be no good reason not to own a shotgun. Shotguns are about the most fun things ever created.
And yes, I act on this kind of urge all the time.
I think a shotgun is a bit much. It's not a terrible idea to keep a firearm around with the speculation that you may someday need it to survive. However, if you're specifically worried about zombies, rather than, say, governmental collapse leading you to need to defend your home and hunt food, well... I think you and those around you would just be safer if you not own a weapon.
If you honestly believe there may be a zombie outbreak and you own a shotgun for those purposes, you may end up making a very, very big mistake at some point.
The fact that you want to decorate it with cute carvings and are pondering not even owning ammunition makes me think you're looking for more of a "toy" than anything. A conversation piece maybe. I think you can get fake or broken shotguns pretty cheap at gunshows and they'd have the same effect as an unloaded gun.
That said, I bought a rather nice ka-bar kukri-style machete on a whim.
I had a bizarre urge to buy Sting one day, so I did. $34.99 on Ebay it costed me, and no I'm not talking about the singer.
I'm talking about the sword.

Man, my machete cost around that much, and it can actually cut stuff.
There are reasons why I own over 25 firearms..
Zombies in my 'hood? Those Female Doggoes won't know what hit them...
But I'll gladly go over the weapon type(s) and bullet caliber with thier headless corpses afterwards

You go into a battlerage in which you channel Vishnu the Many-Armed?

I don't think he was being literal with the zombie part - it was, like, a metaphor.
I hope.
And the urge *I* have been feeling a lot lately is an unstoppable craving for the warm, delicious human brains. What do I do?

Whatever you do, stay away from Chiggie.
I'd like to have a secret gun cabinet with some M-14s in it. (I believe that's the name of the rifle.)
I once bought a longbow from a one-armed woman.
I've had the urge recently to purchase a modern trench knife. I don't know why but there's some appealing to me about owning a knife with a pair of studded brass knuckles attached.
1dgaf, do you mean this fellow? She's a bear on full auto but otherwise a fine rifle!
Having survival and first aid gear is definiately a good idea, under any circumstance. A few flairs, flashlight, antiseptic, bandages, hatchet, two-way radio, shotgun...all necessary for survival.

A few Flairs, you say? Very well!

WHOOOOOOOOOOOO

I'm not a gun nut, or even a gun owner, but a shotgun is perfect for home protection. It offers an audible deterrent if it's pump action, there's no mistaking the sound of cheuk-cheuk. It's visually impressive as well. If it comes down to actually firing it doesn't require a calm hand and steady aim to get results. As a bonus, it has limited penetration power to cause damage through walls.
As an added bonus it's the given zombie fighter weapon of choice, assuming you don't want the weight of a flame thrower.

1Dgaf: WHY DIDN'T I BUY THE F**KING M-16A2!? I tried to return the M-14 2 times! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

When we say a few pics of Flair, that's more of a minimum. We'd like you to express yourself. You do want to express yourself, don't you Lobo?
Yay for shotguns. That's all I've got to say really.
We have a 12-Guage bought specifically for home protection. Shortest legal barrel length, all that good stuff.
It'll probably never get used except for it's short visit to a range after it was first bought, but it's one of those things where it feels good to know it's there.
You know, in case we're around for Z-day.
A chicken in every pot, and a cap in every ass!
You do have a chainsaw, right?
And what about an apocalypse of not-zombies?
Reaper,
I meant one of these:

Actually, you may be able to answer something for me. Is it legal for non-US residents to own firing ranges in the US? Any idea?
Lobster,
You're right. That's one of the reasons I don't think I should own a gun. (The goin mental bit. Not the returning.)

I managed to qoute myself. That's because I'm important.
Why the dislike for the undead? My only reason for wanting a zombie invasion is so I can shoot people in the head and suffer no legal, spiritual or emotional consequences.
