NFL Coaching Carousel

*insert circus music here*

Minnesota hired Philly OC Brad Childress. Don't know how I feel about that move. I think NFL teams are too happy to hire successful coordinators into head coaching jobs, regardless of whether they really fit as head coaches (see: Capers, Dom).

I think there's a difference between young coaches who hit coordinator jobs on their way up the ladder (Billick, Del Rio, Gruden), and guys who are career coordinators. Childress has been a career coordinator.

Kansas City, meanwhile, has agreed to give up a 4th round pick in the event that they sign Herm Edwards. That's nothing compared to the two 1st rounders, two 2nd rounders, and $8 million in cash that the Bucs had to give the Raiders in order to get Gruden (and look at how well Oakland has used those riches). So coughing up a 4th rounder to get to a coach under contract with another team isn't too bad.

Houston's being linked with Gary Kubiak. Again, a longtime coordinator, but Kubiak has been looking to take the next step for a while. And, I'm a bit softer on ex-players in that role, as they understand the locker room part and the dealing with players part. More so than perhaps a career coordinator that hasn't been an NFL player and has been in the ivory tower of the coordinators booth for too long.

Kubiak has been looking to take the next step for a while.

Coach of the year!

Oops, I goofed on this one and started another "Coaching Carousel" thread.

I read the locked thread first and was wondering what in it was so offensive as to cause a lock!

On the Coaching Carousel-
Kubiak was mentioned as a head coaching candidate for Texas A&M before A&M got shackled with Dennis "ride LT's coattails" Franchione. Houston would be a great place for Kubiak to get started, as there's nowhere to go but up.

Unforunately, TB is going to lose Rod Marinelli to another team as the defensive coordinator.

Damn fine coach he is!

Kubiak? Backup QB for John Elway?

I didn't even know he was coaching.

They also got Herman Edwards.. good luck to them. The man's clock mismanagement skills are legendary. And he goes even more conservative than Parcells when the game in on the line.

And Terry Bradway (GM for Jets) is a complete and utter tool. There was obviously tampering done all season by the Chiefs, and all he could get was one 4th round pick? The GM should just walk.

Mike and Mike said the rumor mill is firing up on having Jeff Fisher leave the Titans for one of the open jobs.

I'm happy with Herm, at this point the Chiefs need a defensive minded head coach. If they can hold onto all or the core of their offensive coordinating staff, I think we're a playoff team in 2006.

Yes, for 12 years now, 11 as an offensive coordinator. He was the offensive coordinator for Elway & Co. in their two Super Bowl wins. And he has a third ring from coaching with Shanahan on the 1994 49ers offensive staff.

And the Packers select...

Excuse me while I point and laugh at Green Bay for the next 12 months.

Another career OC/QB coach. He was a QB coach for the Packers in 1999. Looks like a move tailor made to keep Brett Favre around, ensuring Green Bay remains a franchise stuck in "neutral".

OMG, quote of the year:

"Wells Fargo will contribute $5,000 to the 49ers Foundation to help underserved youth in the Bay Area for every 49er touchdown scored this season. (Pause) There's going to be a lot of sad kids."-- Joe Starkey, 49ers radio broadcaster

McCarthy couldn't get jack crap out of the Niners offense this year; what makes you think he can motivate the totality of the Packers into something better than the outhouse that they're stuck in?

I don't think that - what did I say that suggests that in any way?

It was more of a general statement against the Pack rather than you, *Leg*. Green Bay should have been thinking about the long-term with their next coach, and clearly they did not, instead choosing to try to hold on to some fleeting sense of past glory rather than prepare the team for a new era.

Oh, it was THAT kind of "you". Don't confuse me like that.

I've been under a rock for a couple of days and only just heard the news. It looks like I'll be going back under said rock until this time next year.

McCarthy!?!? It's clearly a move to keep Favre around another year, but so would hiring Mariucci whom they did not even interview! Well, the Pack should be able to stock up on talent in the next few drafts.

From what I've read, Mariucci is not interested in jumping right back into another NFL head coaching job. He may take a year off, or pursue a lower profile job.

Another one drops.

Mike Mularkey resigns from the Bills

One day folks are going to stop giving Pittsburgh assistant coaches head coaching jobs.

Dom Capers
Dick Lebeau
Jim Haslett
Chan Gailey
and now Mularkey

Yeah, but you forgot Marvin Lewis.

Well, yes you can include Marvin Lewis and if you really want to Tony Dungy as well.
Although I consider Marvin more of a Raven's assistant, refining his craft with Ray Lewis and company and Dungy more of a Chuck Noll disciple.

Really I love all these assistants on the list, as assistants. I just wish they'd stop raiding the Steeler's coaching staff. I really don't want to see Russ Grimm ( O-Line Coach) or Ken Whisenhunt (Offensive Coordinater) leave.

Bring forth Marv Levy.

I heard they are digging up his grave and putting him in the organization. Man talk about a PR move, what is he 83 now?

Why not just hire Tom Landry's hat?

He's 80. Still seems plenty sharp from what I've seen from him on TV.

I always wonder when someone is going to ressurect Jim Mora, and/or Buddy Ryan

I miss those guys if anything for comedy value.. punching people on the sidelines.. after game press conferences..

Playoffs??!

People have sniffed around Jim Mora, but right now he has zero desire to get back into it.

I would hire Mora in a second. The guy got thrown under the bus after a 6-10 season without Edgerrin James. Granted, Dungy's been great for them, but Mora's a worthy NFL head coach.

Pretty soon, Tuna's teeth will be so green that he'll camouflage in with the field and be lost. Dallas _will_ need a replacement.

Mora's a loser, he has always had the stink of death on him. If KC hired him I'd start rooting for the Raiders.

Excuse my ignorance, but is he still alive... or was that the joke?
