Bioware's "Mass Effect".

you guys are so cute with your anti-console fears...

Easy for you to say. Not all of us can afford to buy one of every console on launch day. Or perhaps three, one for the bedroom, one for the TV room, and one to shred into pieces to take a little hardware bath while laughing haughtily.

This thread is making Baby Jesus cry.

On a THREAD RELATED NOTE, it seems that some people got it in their heads that because of the timing of the information that is would be a launch or near launch title. Not true. The Devs said that the game is still 12-18 months out.

aha! there you have it!.. you answered your own argument.. since this new game from BIOWARE is designed from the ground up on a console (Xbox 360) with a console controller its thus NOT inferior and shouldnt pose a problem.. since just like you said.. its NOT a PC game being ported to a console..

Well, that remains to be seen, clearly. It's a bit premature to say how Bioware will handle controls when they've just issued the press release.

So...its like...stairs are not inferior technology compared to elevators, cause..you know..some of them olympic dudes might make fifth floor faster than the elevator?..

Or possibly stairs give you exercise, don't break down, require no electricity, ect. And when you're moving between two adjacent floors, the stairs are usually faster. Not universally worse in all cases, just different. If you make your building with stairs in mind, and you use stairs it works fine. If you build your building with elevators in mind, and you put in elevators, it works fine. Most of the console FPS stigma comes from the problem that FPSes used to be designed for elevators and then they threw them on a console and gave you 100 flights of stairs. It's just not the case anymore, and you have Halo to thank.

Damn you. I felt Smart, Clever and Special until you came...

We need a new rule on GWJ that says that lame, off-topic PC vs console debates are not allowed, and should instead be directed to a massive, all-time PC vs console thread. Anytime anyone wants to tee up why FPSes suck on console, there you go. Anytime anyone wants to talk about how much better the console industry might be doing, there you go.

I would start this thread myself and post something about how I buy every major console and still spend more on computer hardware by far, over time, but I fear I could get Fired for starting such a thread

on another thread related note:

I'm kinda disappointed that the two rpg's spoken of here are AGAIN situated in a sci-fi cyberpunk universe and a shiny happy Tolkien universe. The two computer gaming/rpg clichés yet again, goodie. What about the Roman Empire? An RPG in the Wild West? Ancient China/Japan? Celtic mythology? Something, ANYthing original! I mean, Bioware is a brand strong enough to be able to enforce some kind of artistic independence, and still convince the suits the game would sell... because it's made by Bioware.

/rant

There are cyberpunk elements in Mass Effect?

*just saw Tom Cruise killed Oprah video: LMAO.

Ancient China/Japan?

It's called Jade Empire

So this is what Evil Avatar is like? I've never been and I'm glad GWJ started before I went there.

Pyro's just giving everybody spankins around here lately.

Good stuff.

Back on topic:

The game sounds interesting. Hopefully it will turn out better than Jade Empire. I liked JE, but only for about the first 6 hours or so. Then I got really really bored.

Hey, I'm totally disappointed I won't be buying this game, believe me. I've tried for ages to figure out FPS on a console pad via SOCOM, but I suck even with a regimented training schedule. No, seriously. I wanted to play with my brother stationed overseas, but the laughter on the headset was too much for me. So, the generic "anyone can do it" arguement is not so much. Which totally bums me out, for a number of reasons.

What I've seen/read so far looks great and I have full confidence in Bioware. Canadians can do no wrong, it's a well known fact.

What about vinegar on french fries? That's just wrong.

And they put mayo on burgers.

How is that wrong? It's quite tasty.

And they put mayo on burgers.

Better than on the fries.

Minus Ten. Million. Points.

So, about this game from the people that make games I find boring. Has anyone read what the main gameplay mechanic of the main character will be? From reading all kinds of articles and previews the best I can get is it's an "realtime action tactical combat" which sounds like it translates into "we haven't decided yet." However, this screenshot seems to imply shooting.

Will this be their first shooter since MDK2? Cause I'm all for games where you never queue up a request for the main character to maybe do something. I'm hoping for gameplay with a more immediate feel to it. Also this screenshot implies boobies. You be the judge.

Article one GamingExcellence. Not terribly informative. They say you'll be able to explore every planet in every star system, but they have no idea what that number is. So either it's procedural or it's five planets, right?

I don't know what the amount will be, but they won't be procedural. Why? Because if they were, the plan to release new planets for download wouldn't make as much sense.

The combat is kind of like KOTOR but with guns and you actually need to aim. You can still pause the game and issue movement commands and such, but it's a lot quicker and more real-time. The demo at E3 didn't show a lot and you get the sense they still have a lot of work to do there. I want my team to use cover and fire over walls and such, we'll see how it shapes up.

Probably going to be a combination of procedural planets and handbuilt ones. Who knows, maybe Bioware will offer new procedures to download.

Too bad this isn't a PC game and you can't make your own planets.

As far as I recall from the presentation, procedural planets were not mentioned at all. Just so we're clear.

Just so I am clear this is an 360 exclusive, right?

At least to begin with. However, if recent Bioware history is any indication, an eventual PC release wouldn't really be out of the question.

Then I find it particularly odd that they state you'll be able to visit every planet. Probably just a misquote.

Hurray for games with gameplay.

Is visiting every planet a feature or something? Isn't that like saying that every level of the New Super Mario Bros. game is user-playable? So exciting!

Well Feday, it's a bit more sandboxy than that. From what I gather, there are lots and lots and lots and lots of planets, many/most of which are not central to the storyline.

I'm just happy the character heads/faces don't look like ass.

I feel you on that last bit. I was looking at one of the screenshots thinking "this is what KOTOR should have looked like."

You bastard.

They really are amazing, especially in motion. The thing that really got me were subtle details like the way their eyes flick across your character's face while they're looking at you, etc. I can't remember the last time I saw a game with RPG-style conversations that were so compelling. If the entire game lives up to the brief conversation scenes they've shown so far ( a tall order, to say the least), whoo boy. It's gonna be very cool.

Getting back to the "size and scope" theme of Mass Effect, the galaxy map displays tons of smaller solar systems with stars, planets and moons that can all be explored. We couldn't get any specific numbers, but from what we saw, it appears that Mass Effect will literally be quite massive (pun intended). You can go to any of the available planets, moons or asteroids, land on their surface and start exploring.
