$4 a gallon for gas

CNN gets reactionary

Here in NY, they have already starting hiking up the price of unleaded gas.. it was averaging around 2.60-2.70 but today I have seen it everywhere from 2.80-3.40. We should see by next week what it stabilizes to.

Good news is that I am already car pooling

A station near my house had regular gasoline priced at $2.49 yesterday morning. When I passed by again on my way home, it was $2.58. This morning, it was $2.85.

It was $2.49 here Monday when I put a couple bucks in... now it's 2.70 everywhere... I was going to drive to Atlanta for the Dragoncon this weekend...

I paid 2.93 yesterday (Irvine, CA) for regular 87. With my 60 mile per day commute, I'm really glad I get 30 mpg.

$2.80 here. But it's only up from $2.75 earlier in the week.

I think this is the time we should rally around our president in support of launching the "Operation Venezuellan Freedom" military campaign.

It went from 2.55 to 3.09 here in Ohio. Thank God I have a short commute. I have a coworker with a 90 minute roundtrip commute that costs him $60 a week to drive... of course he has an SUV but still, this is getting ridiculous.

$3.04 in Cromwell CT. Over $3 in Springfield, MA.

Update: Just across the street from where I work in East Hartford: $2.95 for Regular, $3.14 for Super.

My commuter rail tickets cost me about $140 a month, I guess I should be crying.

I just paid $2.97 a gallon for gas yesterday. I don't commute (rare for Cali) so it's not going to sting as much as for some. Might see my gas budget rise about $20 a month total.

As a fierce free market advocate, I try to put my money where my mouth is and say that if you can't afford car payment/gas/insurance/maintenance then you shouldn't be driving.

$2.87 in these parts. Cost me $46.00 to fill up my 16 gallon tank yesterday. :X

Thank the gods for Metrorail.

Oh I only wish I had mass transportation in between home/work. However, it's still not too bad, my car doesn't get too bad gas mileage and it's only 15-20 miles to work.

But I almost want to get a moped or something.

Fun to ride, until your friends catch you on one. Or is that fat girls?

Newtown CT, $2.99, up from $2.73 yesterday. I've heard it's $3.49 in other parts of CT.

I'm paying over $4 US per gallon up here in Canada...before the latest hike...

quit yer Female Doggoin'

Pigpen, sensitive as always. You do realize why you pay so much up there, don't you?

Hey, we Female Doggo because just a few years ago gas was $1.25 a gallon. I remember seeing it at 89 cents when I first started driving (I'm not that old, 28). It sucks to put $30 in your tank and it barely makes to the halfway mark.

is it out of the question for the Gov't to put a cap on the price of gasoline at the pump? At what point does mass hysteria and consumer confidence become critically shaken?

I no longer question how quickly mob mentality can take over and reduce places to anarchy..

No kidding.

The federal government is grinding into motion to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve...I have no idea how much of an impact that will have. From what I can gather, it seems that it will help compensate for lost domestic production on the Gulf Coast, but not from the loss of oil imports from the Port of NO...?

The oil shipments can be diverted to other ports, though.

I paid $3.31 for premium today, which is up $.50 from what I paid for it last week.

It cost me 37 bucks to put around 11 gallons in my focus.

*edit*
After a look at my receipt from an hour ago, it was just barely shy of 11 gallons. *sigh*

Which other ports? Hurricane Katrina's done a number on the entire Gulf Coast, hasn't it? I guess they could go to Galveston or something, but none of the other ports in the Gulf Coast is as large as New Orleans, and therefore can't handle as much traffic as NO could. Some shipments could be diverted, I suppose, but not all.

Didn't we just have a movie on FX about this? Oil Storm or something? Where NO got smoked by a hurricane and when we moved the shipments to Houston, there was an accident that shut down that port too? Damn...Life imitating art...

Here's my sensitive position, and I do fault the fed gov't for a short-sighted viewpoint (not something I usually do) - but the US price for gas has been under the world norm...well...forever. We are just finally catching up to the world...and why? Because, apparently, looking at how carpool lanes remain somewhat clear, and how the sales of gas guzzlers (I drive one) continue heartily...well, if I was the supplier, I'd raise prices until I saw the consumer finally balk.

In other words, we create our own problems

Found it. Read the synopsis. Freaky.

Which other ports?

Tampa baby! BRING IT!

Obviously, not the Gulf Coast, but there are other ports along the East and West Coasts that can handle it.

As I understand it, the problem with gasoline prices right now isn't so much oil shipments as it is refining capacity. The Gulf Coast accounts for somewhere around 60 percent of the total U.S. refnining capacity, with a significant portion of that now unavailable because of power outages in the area.

Additionally, a major gasoline pipeline running from La. to the Northeast is offline now, again because most of Mississippi is without power.

The Strategic Reserve release is more of symbolic gesture than anything else. I don't know how much they plan to release, but the amount released last summer after Hurricane Ivan equaled about a half-day of U.S. oil consumption. So it really wasn't very much.

But the oil market is very news driven - so the the news about the strategic release is having, it appears, its intended effect. Right now, oil is trading down almost $2, around $68/barrel. It had been up to $70.25 earlier today.

The problem is not oil, but gas. Two major pipelines that supply gas to the NE and SE both run through Mississippi and are currently without power. They just had someone on from Pilot a large gas station company, that said that if the pipelines don't start flowing within 48 hours, he will start losing the ability to supply gas to some of his 1000+ gas stations.

Only if broken up between many multiple ports. NO took more tonnage every day then most ports in the world. No one place is equiped to handle that much of a load, and I doubt any two or three ports could handle it either.

Fat girls get better mileage than mopeds and are roomier!
