People Wearing Tails?

Pages

Ok, I have a question and I am hoping that someone here will know what this is all about.

In the past 3 days or so, I have seen 3 people wearing tails. 2 were wearing a racoon tail and another was wearing a lion tail (i think).

What is this?

They are walking around in regular clothes but with tails hanging out the back of their pants. Does this have something to do with anime, like Inuyasha? Are kids hiding their drugs in these tails? Perhaps it's a new fetish, not unlike furries?

If someone can please enlighten me, it will be greatly appreciated.
I have never felt so old. I kinda understood the baggy pants and the chains (although I despised it), but this tail thing just has me stumped.

Thanks in advance.

I'd say this must be a new fad in the vein of Live Strong rubber bracelets.

Furries, you've found yourself among furries.

Maybe they're....FURRIES!

Convention in town?

Google for furries.

Personally I want one of these: http://spunkykitty.com/index.php?cPa...

Looks like she can custom make some too. Maybe I can get those little monsters from PA or the green robot from Invader Zim.

I've seen tails a bit in the past, but not so often as ears. As in, cat or bunny ears. I usually attribute it to a certain sub-culture which finds such things "cute" (such as girls in cat ears).
It's anime based, in part, and is part of the same sort of rebellion which started the grunge trend a little more then a decade ago. It's part rebellion, but at the same time it's part sub-cultural assimilation - you'll find that wearing such things is trendy, and that the people who do so tend to group. Honestly, it's no different then Abercrombie gear, or the goth stuff. To each their own.

"No, we LIKED the skunk tails."

I don't know about convention but I have seen few people wearing a tail... never game much though to it.

::shudder::
Furries give me the creeps man, the CREEPS!

Well, I know that there is no convention in town. In Nashville, the only real conventions that happen are about country music (blahhh). Renaissance Festival is not due back till next March or May.

If it's about things being "cute", I have never known a guy to try to be cute like that. 2 of the 3 people I saw were guys. These people almost looked like they were Goth / D&D rejects and they are trying to find their own clique to reject people from. They mostly wore grunge type clothes, which I have always liked, but the tail just didn't fit their look. Everyone that saw them walk away was laughing at them. ::shrug:: I dunno. I guess Sleipner is right. It's just rebellious sub-culture assimilation way of life.

Furries, well, furries are EVIL, evil right down to their cold black hearts which pump not blood like yours or mine, but rather a thick, vomitous oil that oozes through their rotten veins and clots in their pea-sized brains which becomes the cause of their Nazi-esque patterns of violent behavior. Do you understand?

That is one way of looking at it, Q_Stone...

Hmmmm, I see Furries inspire the Hate/Love reaction.

no offense to the Furries amongst us; just not my choice/style.....

furries creepy me out too. I always secretly hated the fact that they are related to "our community"
(not gamers, but anime fans and otaku). I know at least 5 of them right now, used to work for one when i did IT for my college, and have been dragged to a few of the cons in Indy by furry friends and coworkers.

*shudders*

Im into cosplay as much as the next man.. but the real psychological reasoning behind furries is what gets me.

FURRYS=! Anime fans/ Cosplayers

Dear god.. please dont do us the disservice.

Which is to say...not at all. Right? Right, Gang...?

This is too interesting for me to pass up.

What exactly is it about furries in particular that bothers everyone so much? It it just people who assume animal characteristics in general, or is it more of the sexual aspects on some furries which bothers everyone so much? Is it the physical changes and costume which is associated? What I'm really wondering is why furries so much more then other odd characteristics some people have?

That's... so... odd...

I would have thought it's a piece of visual slang: hanging tails out signifys they're out to, ehm, get some tail. I had no idea there was a whole subculture behind it.

Yeah, to each their own is pretty much my philisophy as well. Which is why I don't need these nonsensicals on my TV trying to sell me bottled water.

Everything has a subculture.

It's because the first piece of furry material most people are shown is furry porn.

Even non-furry porn looks like furry porn to me. Just look at that first picture in the wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furries. It looks like that comic is about some sort of furry animal family incest.

Those costume animie fan guys creep me out too, no offence to anybody. Oh, and live action roleplayers, late one night I was taking a nice stroll around campus and came across a group of guys "swordfighting" and "casting spells".

I have no doubt that would be traumatic for many people (myself included), but in the same vein some of the first game art I saw was porn as well - and I was shocked then, too. In fact, I have a horror story as to a joke played on me with respect to the word "Yaoi" and my ignorance as to what it meant until shown. And I was pissed too, but that's a different story.

My point is that I think there's something extra which people find so horrific about furries. Not to say furry porn isn't enough to freak anyone out, but I think it must go deeper then that. Something that we find so horrific about this particular lifestyle, which goes beyond the contexts we normally accept. I mean, who here thinks a furry lifestyle is more insane then someone who feels they must always wear silly hats, or dress only in pink, or something else which is well outside the norm? I'm not being critical of anyone, mind you, I'm just genuinely curious about why there's such a strong stigma on this particular bizarre thing, when there are lots of other ones as well?

I find most things bizzare things bizzare.

I'd do her.

Women is leather is a bizarre fetish which is pretty accepted, I'll agree.

A Google search yielded this disturbing page: http://www.greysquirrel.net/clip.html

Maybe this is all some kind of hip inside joke.

Sorry.. while I myself dont cosplay, I encourage it, and it's part of the community I associate with.
In fact im doing my second cosplay workshop on August 13th for our local anime group.. and I have a few cosplay manuals, EGL handbooks, and subscribe to Cosmode, newtype, and Protoculture addicts as well.

Costume play is fun, and some of the people I know really put a lot of effort into their costumes. It helps with self image issues, and it's a skilled hobby that is nonviolent and semi productive, so why not condone it?

Actually this is the only part of furridom I do accept. A well made fursuit is a sight to behold.
just dont try to convince me you are really a cat in a people suit.

My old boss used to say he felt more "free" as his fox, and actually referred to his "human name" as his alter ego. He believed he was really a fox at heart, and was "misplaced" as a human when he was born. I've met a few other furries that feel this way. It's ok to admire traits that certain animals exhibit, like bravery, or compassion.. but to actually believe you are an animal signifies something wrong to me. I dont care if two people want to pretend to be animals and have sex.. that doesnt bother me.

Plushies however are a different story.

It's an absolutely spectacular subculture for a myriad of reasons, from the Scientologist-like level of self-defense ("Fursecution" comes to mind) to the tie-ins with other subcultures like Otherkin and so forth.

I'd wager it's furries. They are a rather derided group, partly for being different, partly because they have a habit of ruining parts of people's childhood ("Hey! What if Chip and Dale were gay and had 8-foot long wangs?!? I'd better draw that!") If one of them uses the word "Yiff" in conversation with you, run. Run far, far, far away.

It never creeped my out, but I have always found it pretty hilarious. Especially these guys.

If so, I should ask them what product they use.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but what does "Yaoi" and "Yiff" mean?
