Welcome folks, and happy “847th Anniversary of the Battle of Montisgard” week! You may all celebrate by playing a game where you lose an early battle, but make a huge comeback later.

This week brings us to the end of November and puts a tippy toe into December, which has a few tentpole releases scheduled later. For now, we’re into some weeds of visual novels, ports, DLC and remakes.

The Crew Motorfest: The Chase Squad is an expansion pack for Ubisoft’s live-service answer to Forza: Horizon. It adds a bunch of new cars and new Burnout-style challenges, like pursuits and takedowns.

Neon Blood is an indie cyberpunk game that mixes pixelated 2.5D adventure gaming with flashy cybercombat and anime cutscenes.

Nine Sols is a console port of a challenging, hand-drawn Castlevanioid that was called ‘2D Sekiro’ when it released on PC.

Ravenswatch is a console port of a roguelike top-down dungeon crawler by the makers of Curse of the Dead Gods, a well-executed Hades-alike. It’s got co-op with 8 different characters drawn from various folklore (ie public domain) to choose from, including the Monkey King himself, Sun Wukong.

House Flipper: Dine Out is DLC that bolts a food-service management sim onto the base game, which is about renovating houses for short-term profit. Both parts of the game are still from the landlord’s perspective, in that it’s all about capitalising your property, so much that humans are never even shown.

Shines Over: The Damned says it’s not so much a game as a horror experience. I think that’s what you call a walking simulator when it lasts only half an hour. Buyer beware.

Of the few actual original games this week, Neon Blood has combat that looks interesting enough to put up with the adventure gaming and anime cutscenes. But Ravenswatch looks like a solid entry in its genre, one that could get its hooks in. And it has Monkey King! GOTW.

GWJ Word of the Week

Side-scroller: A video game that is viewed from a side-view camera angle, where the screen follows the player as they move left or right. From this angle, many game genres are presented: adventure games, beat’em ups, platformers, shmups or, in the case of Hollow Knight or Cuphead, 3 of those things.
