  Felix “Let’s Build a Story” Threepaper

Welcome folks, and happy “119th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar” week! You may all celebrate by playing a game where you win a resounding battle, but lose one of your best squaddies, and you don’t reload, out of respect.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is bringing some new tricks while some old ones return. The new tricks include a 360-degree movement system, where you can sprint, slide and dive in any direction, enabling some John Woo-style sideways jumping while firing. You can also customise your movement to automatically slide or mantle when you approach an obstacle, if you want to play like Assassin’s Creed. The old trick is a crowd-pleaser: round-based Zombies mode returns, replacing Modern Warfare 3’s open-world Zombies mode. For all the hype about visuals and fidelity, it is still coming out on PS4 and Xbox One.

Alan Wake II: Lake House Expansion drops another chunky dollop of lore into the Alan Wakeiverse. The new location, the Lake House, is mentioned in Alan Wake II and in the expansion, you play as an agent from the Federal Bureau of Control, as seen in Control. The storyline runs parallel to Alan Wake II’s story and anything beyond that is spoiling things. It’s a great piece of DLC for spooky season.

Wildermyth: Console Edition is the console port of this charming RPG from 2021 that simulates a tabletop RPG with a sprawling, multi-generational story. Your heroes get character traits, which affect the narrative events, like in Crusader Kings. The turn-based combat is fun and traits can provide interesting options there, too. The proc-gen aspects of its story-telling and character development ensure that you can replay the 15-hour campaign over and over and experience vastly different stories and events.

Kong: Survivor Instinct is a 2.5D survival game set in a city while Kong rampages within it. Instead of playing as a giant ape, smashing buildings and cars, you’re just a regular ol’human dad, creeping through the ruins while Kong makes Deus Ex Machina appearances every now and again.

The Smurfs: Dreams is yet another Smurfs game that doesn’t utilise the one thing about Smurfs that could be interesting in a gamepay sense: that each one has a specific job. It’s just generic 3D platforming, where each Smurf plays the same as the other.

Otherwise, there’s anime flight combat in Rogue Flight or a Kids’ TV tie-in game in Miraculous: Paris Under Siege.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is the juggernaut this week, but it’s not on my radar—I’m keeping my powder dry for the mammoth RPG coming next week. Alan Wake II: Lake House Expansion looks great, but I haven’t played Alan Wake II yet. So I’ll give the GOTW to Wildermyth for coming out on console, and for being short enough to finish before next week.

GWJ Word of the Week

Camping: a tactic in games where a person finds an advantageous static position, which may be discreet or hidden, and stays there taking shots at everyone, racking up the kills before people even know they’re there. This can be seen as elite or noob behaviour, depending on the context. In first-person shooters, it’s often seen as cheap or unsporting, whereas in many stealth games, it’s the optimal way to play. Professional level designers are aware of camping and design levels to prevent it, or enable it and watch everyone scramble for the same spots. This tactic is not to be confused with camping’s uglier cousin, spawn camping, which is universally reviled.
