Star Wars Misc. Catch-All

My wife last night during the movie: "No brand new mom just loses the will to live because of some guy."

Such a keen student of human behavior, script writer Lucas. Almost as insightful as the astounding dialogue he writes, which is exactly like things that human people would say!

My only quibble with this is that dialog in film doesn't need to sound like real world dialog to be good. But don't mistake my point for accolades of prequel dialog

Skeleton Crew

Gotta give them credit for creating the most Star Wars beginning of the franchise since Star Wars.

Skeleton Crew. My wife really didn't like it, but I thought it was OK I guess? The kids were mostly OK. I found myself principally drawn to the blue elephant child, who seems to be the only one of them who feels like real person to me. The other ones seem to just continually exhibit their assigned type without a lot of nuance.

The first two episodes felt like a lot of setup, and I can't say it's really charming me or drawing me in yet. It feels like we're a weak episode away from giving it up.

Watched the first episode, not terrible? Definitely Star Wars Goonies, very Spielberg looking. No surprises and characters are one dimensional, but I feel like they have executed it well. The opening action scene was pretty good. I think they've already done better world building than The Acolyte. The Acolyte always felt like it was happening on a stage. This feels bigger and realer, even if it's not my cup of tea.

I'm also kind of underwhelmed. The kids are written like an adult's idea of a kid, and not like an actual child or a full on character for that matter. It feels like a kids show, but there's a bunch of weird nostalgia plays for GenX+ throughout the show. The whole kids on bikes in suburbia thing has been extinct for multiple decades now, and I think the symbolism is starting to slip from cheery memory of youth into something more complicated. I guess I don't understand who this show is for.

Also, where did that little girl get a blaster from? Was she just open carrying around suburban space-New Jersey?

I mean, they were explicitly going for the Amblin 80s adventure movie vibe, so it mostly comes down to whether that kind of show is what you want to watch or not.

That makes sense, I suppose. I didn't dislike it, it's just hitting a weird tone. Maybe trying to split the difference between kids and parents? I dunno. Maybe I'll warm to it when it gets a little more into its swing.

It is better then the Alcolyte, though not sure if that says something. As a show geared towards kids it is good enough for me to enjoy it.

I have seen mentions of how it is very Goonies like, but I was thinking it is more like Peter Pan.

Spoiler:

- The director of the second episode wrote and directed the Peter Pan and Wendy movie
- The droid SM-33 is basically Captain Hook's first mate, aka Smee.
- Jude Law played Captain Hook in Peter Pan and Wendy.
- Pirates everywhere
- Their ship is a pirate ship
- Lost boys (and girls)
- Pointing to "which star is At Attin", which the response must be "second on the right and straight on till morning".

Skelton Crew speculation:

Spoiler:

"Jod Na Nawood" does sort of sound like my toddler nephew trying to say "long john silver" with a heavy cold and a mouth full of wotsits.

Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White joins the cast of "The Mandalorian and Grogu" as... Stinky the Hutt. I didn't think the Luigi news from earlier today could be topped, but it has!

I don’t tink I want to like Star Wars anymore.

There’s still hope for Darth Icky!

Just watch Andor and pretend the rest doesn’t exist.

Although I will admit I really liked Ahsoka.

Just don't think about what The Force Awakens did to all of their hard work and sacrifice.

It wasn’t The Force Awakens that was the problem. It was how everyone - Fans & Disney - reacted to The Last Jedi that was the problem.

No I mean how they stupidly wiped out the entire Republic government in a silly manner.

Oh, that. At least it was slightly better than ‘Somehow, the Emperor has returned’.

I went into Skeleton Crew without many expectations. The performances of child actors was a concern, some of the other recent series have been underwhelming, and it seemed like the target demographic was kids. I was pleasantly surprised. It's definitely kid-friendly, but just a lot of fun.

Maybe that's why I'm enjoying it? There were plenty of common 80's tropes, but the way they dropped them into a Star Wars setting seemed well-done, not hackneyed.

Skeleton Crew is really really just "The Goonies" in space (hell, there are even pirates everywhere!) but that doesn't mean that it's actually quite enjoyable.

It is a little bit twee in places, but overall it works because it really comes across as a show that knows not only what it is, but also what it wants to be.

As much as Star Wars fans love to hate on Kathleen Kennedy, 80's adventure movies are definitely her area of expertise.

While I felt the first few episodes were more Peter Pan, the last few are very Goonies.

Skeleton Crew was very good. Not what I look for in Star Wars, but it was really well done. Good story, well directed and produced. Fun moments, new and interesting angle on the Star Wars universe. Jude Law did a great job bringing a unique character to life, and I hope to see more of him.

I enjoyed it. It had a few blemishes such as the main kid being really annoying, but considering the target audience was children, I can't complain. It is too bad it is getting worse views then Acolyte which might mean we won't see a sequel. By far my favorite character was Neel.

Silly question: Could I watch Skeleton Crew with my 8yo? Is it really for kids or is it for "kids" who grew up in the 80-90s?

It is for both. I watched it with my 10 year old and my 6 year old. We all really enjoyed it.

One of my favorite Stars Wars properties. It’s exactly what I want from the series, stories about normal people in the crazy Star Wars universe that aren’t focused on Jedi BS or filling in the “main storyline.” Stakes that are more personal and aren’t going to blow up planets or upset the balance of power or anything.

If you would let your 8yo watch The Goonies then this is probably ok.

Spoiler:

I have never seen The Goonies. Or maybe I have, but I have no memories of seeing it nor any concept of the plot.

Best I can do for you is the Honest Trailer.

Is that the kid from Temple of Doom?
