NFL 2024: The preseason thread

Geez those stat lines. 49 attempts and 11 rushes? They worked him like a mule. They tried to shove two years of reps into one game.

67.3% completion even after throwing 5 INTs. Only 5 of his 49 attempts weren’t caught by someone. Dude’s going full Jameis I guess.

I have to watch the replay of this game.

Question about these Guardian Caps.

Olympic boxing removed the protective caps for men not too long ago and reportedly is about to for women. Rationale is that there was a study done (one!) that indicated the additional weight and size of the head led to increased force production onto the brain when the head was struck. Also some thinking that boxers were less cautious with headgear on.

Has anyone heard anything about this seeming disconnect (more protective covering = increased brain trauma; NFL wants more head covering) during preseason?

Well the NFL is allowing guardian caps to be worn during games this season for the first time, so I'd say they're going in the opposite direction.

Not sure how direct a comparison you can draw between boxing headgear and Guardian Caps. For the former, the difference is between having about a pound of weight on your head, or zero. For football, it's about whether or not you're adding 7 ounces to an already 4.5 lb helmet. The relative change is a lot smaller.

The Athletic's QB Tiers are out!

Tier 1 (carries his team each week, no holes in his game):
Mahomes, Burrow, Josh Allen

Tier 2 (carries his team but not as consistently; a hole or two in his game)
Lamar, Stafford, Herbert, QAaron, Stroud, Dak, Goff, Hurts, Purdy, Cousins, Love

Tier 3 (legit starter but needs help)
Tua, Trevor, Kyler, Watson (boo), Mayfield, Carr, Geno, Russell

Tier 4 (unproven player or veteran who shouldn't start all 17 games)
Danny Dimes, Fields, Minshew, Richardson, Levis, Bryce, Darnold, Brissett

Tier 5 (new this year but not defined)
Nobody

Biggest risers: Love and Purdy went from Tier 4 to Tier 2; Goff went from 3 to 2

Biggest fallers: Herbert and Rodgers went from 1 to 2, Trevor and Watson went from 2 to 3

Twitter reax so far seems to be that Burrow's too high and Lamar's not high enough.

I realize if you're effectively doing only four tiers things are going to be a bit weird, but Tier 3 having everybody from Tua and T-Law down to Russell Wilson or Carr . . . that's definitely not exactly a contiguous group.

Also, in today's episode of Raw Stats Out Of Context Theater, Trey Lance led the NFL in both passing yards and rushing yards this preseason.

Yeah how are Lamar's receivers dropping balls a hole in his game? WTF

This kind of sums up your average episode of Game of Thrones.

CeeDee is happy with his $136 million, $100 million guaranteed. Aiyuk and soon to be Jamarr Chase probably are very interested in that number. I suspect Dak and Parsons are very, very interested in that number and what number they could get next year.

Also tied for INT lead with Old Man Stetson Bennett.

He did not lead the league in passer rating. That honor went to Mac Jones.

Preseason games are just UFL All-Star games waiting to happen.

Titans ship Malik Willis to the Packers for a 7th round pick.

So because of this true crime kick I've been on with Netflix for most of this year, tonight I got recommended this one hour documentary about the life and death of Steve McNair. For all we have dunked on Jeff Fisher over the years in this very subforum, he now definitely has a "retired, bitter Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi" vibe in his old age. Also, from a true crime watcher perspective, there was more going on than the murder-suicide explanation than Nashville police concluded back in 2009.

You mean Arena League interim commissioner and President of Football Operations for the Nashville Kats Jeff Fisher.

How will the entire AFL go .500?

It's cutdown day, which means entire fanbases will be obsessed with the waiver wire and the practice squad.

Meanwhile, the nation's middle and high schools are bracing for the annual influx of assistant football coaches / ISS teachers.

On a more serious note, it's a heartbreaking day for a lot of dudes who have been among the best guys on the football field since Pop Warner but don't have the talent / drive / connections / hamstrings to play in the NFL. Godspeed to all of 'em.

I really didn't pay much attention to the preseason but the back up QB play was not good.

So they made a move. Obviously screwed if Love goes down but they need someone to bridge any short term injuries.

Going into the season with no clear kicker either. Apparently Carlson is going to get cut and Greg Joseph wasn't exactly lights out either.

Maybe the most anxiety inducing thing being a fan is when your team is competitive but the kicking is so erratic you don't know what to expect.

I'm sure somebody who has thoughts on drafting kickers will have thoughts on Green Bay cutting Carlson just one year after drafting him.

Green Bay's problem wasn't drafting a kicker, but not being aggressive enough to draft the league's future kicking GOAT.

Doing a quick skim of bad team good enough kicker the first name that stands out is.... Daniel Carlson.

I'm 100% fine with them cutting Anders and trading for Daniel. I'm pretty sure Justin Tucker is not available.

WHO MIGHT HAVE THOUGHTS ON DRAFTING KICKERS.

Hey, Jake "20th in FG%" Moody is slightly better than Evan "just got a contract extension even though he was 21st in FG%" McPherson, I guess.

What will eventually kill me is an aneurysm of some dipshit on Reddit talking about how great of a pick Sebastian Janikowski was because the team was too stubborn to cut a mediocre kicker after wasting a first rounder on him.

The Patriots have cut the kicker they drafted in the 4th last year, Chad Ryland.

That means the only 2023 drafted kicker left standing is the man who kicked the SUPER BOWL RECORD LONGEST FIELD GOAL EVER (until 30 minutes later) JAKE MOODY!

Also, more fun cuts:

- Jags cut BEAT HARD. Mac Jones has claimed QB2 behind Jaguar Jesus.
- Chargers cut our favorite minor league star QB, Luis Perez. Better be practice squadding him!
- Cardinals cut Desmond Ridder, losing the QB2 job to Clayton Tune. Ouch.
- Panthers give up on Terrace Marshall.
- Titans give up on Caleb Farley.

I would watch a team led by someone named Clayton Tune.
Sounds like a Disney mentor that dies in the first act
Or is he the guy that wrote the music for "Princess and the Frog"?

Underrated comment.

The 49ers have chosen to release Robbie Chosen.

Kadarius Toney also cut, look forward to what future team will think they can fix him.

Eagles.

As of cutdown day, of the 53 players on Tampa's roster, 44 were drafted by the Bucs, and the only starters who weren't drafted by the team are Baker, Ben Bredeson (who's starting at LG because he has a pulse and is likely to be the weak link), and K Chase McLaughlin. Sure, part of it is the Bucs dragging themselves out of salary cap hell and needing to stock the player with cheap, lower draft pick players, but Jason Licht has done very well to build up that roster in recent years via the draft.

AJ Dillon out for the year. Yikes.

That said really like some of our other backs.

Many are called but few none are Chosen.

That's phenomenal.

For Carolina, it's 22 draft picks (20 on the 53-man roster, 2 on the injured/reserve). Of those 22, only 11 are starters. That includes LB Shaq Thompson (drafted in 2015), RT Taylor Moton (2017) and TE Ian Thomas (2018).

Former GM Scott Fitterer was bad at spotting talent, so the Panthers did the obvious thing in the offseason and fired him and hired his No. 2, Dan Morgan. Dan's just as capable as Fitterer of trading Brian Burns for a 12th-round pick and a bag of used footballs, and his salary is probably less, too.
