Argentina lose to France, and are taking it about as well as you'd think they would.
Grant Fisher got bronze in the 10k!
US man hasn't medaled in that in 50+ years.
Was an exciting finish.
And your best story today, Julien Alfred wins gold in the women's 100M, the very first medal EVER for St Lucia. Honestly, look at what it means to the people.

I feel like there are plenty of these celeb things that are just brand collabs.
From all accounts those two are truly friends. Sure it could all just be good marketing but I prefer to believe otherwise.
Trying escargot.
Again, if this is all a work, it's one HELL of a long-lasting scam.
That mixed medley 4x100 in the pool was nuts. My kids loved it.
"Sorry, China."
The 4x400 track relay was also incredible.
NBC Sports is topped by thoughtless morons so they spoil the result in the video title, but it's still worth watching.
If you can find it, please, please seek out the interview with Femke Bol after the race. You are not prepared for her voice.
Everyone on the internet is pointing out how much the Canadian who won gold at the hammer throw looks like David Crosby. I say based on what Melissa Ethridge disclosed about David Crosby there's a statistical chance that there's a very good reason why this Canadian looks like David Crosby.

Cease and desist from Disney is imminent.
Maybe hire her to work at Euro Disney.

One of Seinfeld's timeless bits.
Greatest guy in the world... nobody's ever heard of him.
The official Omega Timing photo for the Men's 100m Final finish is wild.
Two people have feet across the line before Liles, but clavicles > *
Obviously the problem here is the race is too short for guys to separate from each other, and they just need to make the race longer.

They could probably double the 100m distance and make Lyles run it again.
No idea what they'd call it though.

Nothing new to see here!
The verb is probably 'To Bubka'. Sergei Bubka broke his own indoor and outdoor World Records a total of 35 times in his career.
And - towards the end of the 1980s - he'd perfected the technique of increasing his record by 1cm each time and thereby collecting record bonuses from his sponsor, Nike. I remember British athletics commentators mentioning this at time.
Ingebritsen failing to even medal in the 1500 is my favourite thing in the Olympics so far.
Canada losses to France in basketball.
Definitely disappointing but sometimes you need to crash out to get things right.
Team most likely thought they were medal contenders and instead they crash out to Evan Fournier.
WOW.
Brazil is kicking Spain's shit in.
Also, USWNT hooray!
Oh, and the box score for the USA-Brazil basketball game is so funny.
Brazil has to rely on some dude getting hot and going like 11-24, while the USA has like seven players all going 5-6.

Had a feeling, home crowd might carry. I hovered over the French ML... but instead just went with France to cover the 8.5.

Ya honestly not that surprised more disappointed.
Of the teams to draw first France was probably the worst with home court + potential to bounce back from a meh group stage.
I'll say it was super weird though to watch an international game with an agro home fan base that was French cheering on basketball. Could totally see international tournaments getting more popular.
You can't tell me that speed walking isn't just a very long form comedy sketch. Particularly with their obsession with closeup slo-mo shots. I'm sure that everybody involved can't believe that people are still buying this shit.

Yep. And the farce will continue for so long as casual viewers remain ignorant of the rules. From the official Olympics website:
Race walking differs from running, where an athlete often has both feet off the ground during their strides in a sprint. In race walking, however, athletes must always have one foot in contact with the ground at all times, as visible to the human eye. Judges are present at events to ensure the rule is enforced.
If there is no visible contact, it is deemed as ‘lifting’ and attracts a penalty.
Furthermore, the athlete’s knee of their advanced leg must not bend and the leg must straighten as the body passes over it. Each race walker is judged carefully and can be penalised if he bends his knee during the race.
Judges ranging from five to nine, depending on the category of the event, inspect the race with their naked eyes. They carry paddles with symbols for ‘loss of contact’ (~) and ‘bent knee’ (<).
I highlighted the "visible to the naked eye" passage, because this fudge was added in 1996 in response to modern camera technology (such as super slo-mo) that made it clear to TV viewers that many of the elite competitors were - in effect - running a lot of the time. It was basically the sport saying, "To hell with modern technology! We're staying in the dark ages! You can run, as long as the judges cant' really tell!"
People associated with the sport have long recognised that this is ludicrous. And it has resulted in a sport "plagued by frequent disqualifications at the highest levels due to judgment that is not objectively verified". Most famously, in 2000, when Jane Saville was DQed mere metres from winning Olympic gold in the women's 20km.
As Paul Hoffman puts it in the article that I linked to:
What is unique, and in my view, philosophically untenable about the current state of competitive racewalking, is that the essential and defining characteristic of the sport as a whole is subjective. Even in judged sports such as gymnastics and diving, the competitors are being evaluated on very specific elements. No one is being told that he is doing the sport completely wrong.
