NFL 2024: The preseason pre-draft thread

Not sure how much I love turning Aaron Jones into Josh Jacobs.

If you ignore how they play the RB position we go from a 29 year old to 26. Albeit a 26 that has had a lot of miles on his legs also.

I'll have to do my homework on S Xavier McKinney. Largest deal for a non Pro bowl safety but considering who gets picked for the Pro bowl maybe that doesn't even matter.

Otherwise Packers released Campbell + Bakhtiari so they made enough room to still maybe bring more bodies but I'd expect just depth.

Trust the process.

Carolina traded Christian McCaffery, DJ Moore, and Brian Burns, all first round picks age 26 or younger, and the only first round pick they got in return turned into Bryce Young.

Can David Tepper buy the Falcons or Saints so I can enjoy this more?

BEARDARNOLD.

Sorry, Legion. You may have gained a McCorkle but you have lost a HeyDarnold.

I am a bit surprised the Sam Darnold Reclamation Tour is a $10 million contract when Baker Mayfield's was only $4 million. Was there enough hope in those 46 passes he threw last year to make him 2.5 Bakers?

Derrick Henry to the Ravens! That's actually kind of terrifying.

Speaking of the Ravens, what do I need to know about Patrick Queen? Is he any good? And can he play all the defensive positions? As of right now, the Panthers have something like three or four defensive starters.

If that doesn't turn Baltimore into a Super Bowl contender, nothing will.

I was afraid that we would overpay for Henry, but the contract looks very reasonable. Two years, $16mil with incentives up to $20mil, $9mil guaranteed. That puts him between Deandre Swift and Josh Jacobs in APY and less than either in guaranteed money. Considering how Saquon set the market, I think this was a solid move.

As for Queen, we probably would have exercised the 5th year option had we had Roquan earlier. Prior to the Smith acquisition, Queen was very much a disappointment. Showed a lot of promise, but was deeply inconsistent. After Smith, he was a pure beast.

The question everyone has to ask is whether or not Queen has really turned a corner and it just happened to coincide with the league's best inside linebacker playing right next to him or whether it is easier to look like a great dancer when Fred Astaire is leading. The Ravens were not in a position to pay enough to find out. Looks like that job is up to Seattle.

Hot take, I remember Emmitt Smith on the Cards. This will be worse.

He's a 30 year old with more than 2,000 carries whose yards per carry hit a career low last year. Historically speaking, there's not exactly a lot of precedent for a guy like this really being impactful in the future.

In 2023, he played all 17 games, rushed for 1167 yards for 4.2 per carry, and 12 TDs.

Compare that to

Josh Jacobs
13 games, 805 yards, 3.5/carry, 6 TDs

Tony Pollard
17 games, 1005, 4.0/carry, 6 TDs

D'Andre Swift
16 games, 1049, 4.6/carry, 5 TDs

All three are making more than him.

Edit: he also had zero fumbles on 266 carries compared to three a piece for each of the others on fewer carries.

Edit edit:

Saquon Barkley ($12.6M/yr)
14 games, 962, 3.9/carry, 6 TDs, 2 fumbles

Jonathan Taylor ($14M)
10 games, 741, 4.4, 7 TDs, 1 fumble

Alvin Kamara ($15M)
13 games, 694, 3.9, 5 TDs

Yeah if Henry stays healthy and doesn't fumble that's a big win for Ravens.

Looks like Queen is going to the Steelers. Huh.

I still like the Travis Henry deal. Send him to 20+ other teams, meh. But put him on a team like the Ravens that likes to run the ball and is damned good at it, watch out.

Edit: It's not all about Henry. Having Henry and Lamar in the same backfield unlocks both those dudes.

Looks like Queen is going to Pittsburgh, not Seattle.

Those are big if's.

Like Paleo posted, he did both last year.

Thomas Jones was 31 and Ricky Williams was 32 when they both broke 1,000 rushing yards in 2009. Since then, it's been done three times total, twice by Frank Gore and once by Adrian Peterson. Henry's going to hit 31 near the end of the season.

Maybe he does something amazing, but he's a power back who's getting old. Yeah, run friendly system, but were I to bet, the safer money is he follows historical trends and isn't particularly good from this point on.

And do you think he can do both again this season? Considering his history, I would say last season, where he was playing for a last contract, was the aberration and not the new norm.

Alvin Kamara is only one year younger.

And is terrible; he's missed 10 games the last 3 years, and has been progressively more awful. I'm not sure comparing someone to Kamara is exactly complimentary.

There's just a long history of 29 being The Wall for RBs. Henry's also got a style of play where I don't think it's unreasonable to think he's more likely to face issues as he ages than a lot of RBs do.

I guess I am not seeing the drastic statistical dropoff that you see in his last couple seasons. The numbers I noted upthread are pretty impressive. Even if he has "lost a step", he is still statistically the second most productive running back in football (behind CMC).

I am pretty sure that Trump has the crazy f*ckwit vote stitched up.

In what might qualify as one of the most confusing trades of all time, the Steelers and the Panthers are trading Diontae Johnson for Donte Johnson. Don't ask me in which direction.

Johnson's going to Carolina, and Johnson's going to Pittsburgh.

Glad I could help.

But which one is going to Carolina, D. Johnson or D. Johnson?

At the risk of ruining the joke.

Diontae Johnson (the WR) is going to CAR and Donte Jackson (the CB) is going to PITT.

I am glad to be a wet blanket.

As I posted in D&D, this was a stunt by the RFK Jr. campaign to try and generate headlines. And it seems to have worked.

The Henry deal is a good because it's 2 years.

Unless he absolutely craters it's better than pretending Gus Edwards is actually going to play.

The Josh Jacobs deal looks bad. It's not. It's a 1 year deal actually. It's also probably a 1 year deal unless he plays amazing and if he earns it then whocares.

Maybe most surprising is Aaron Jones 1 year 7m to a non contending team without a QB. No playoff team wanted to throw him a fake multi year contract? I actually feel bad for him because if he landed on a AFC contender I could see him being a contributor. Vikings? Feels like a situation where they run him into the ground trying to make any offense spark and he's a FA next year 1 year older.

It's a cold world for NFL RBs but we all knew this.
