Steam Deck and Linux Gaming

i think i'll probably upgrade in the next year or so and either give the old one to a dear friend who needs more gaming in his life or maybe pass it on to my kid. i agree that the extra battery life is the biggest draw, but for now just strapping a nice power bank to the back covers that without extra cash out the door.

It's see through with some color accents. You can see it in the LTT video or the Tested video.

Battery life sounds to be much better. Wifi and bluetooth improvements as well.

I picked up Hades the other day and have been enjoying that on mine lately. That, Vampire Survivors, and Kingdom have been my games lately on the deck. Also started Rise of the Tomb Raider that was long in my backlog.

I had a second of "new version lust" but seeing that the internals are the same I got over it. I play 99% of the time on the TV or through the AR Glasses so it was pretty easy.
I do have a bit of regret because the battery is better but I can live until next year when they put out another version with slightly better hardware.

What AR glasses? Xreal?

I think if I was to second guess my Steam Deck, the Lenovo Legion Go would likely be what I'd go to. This new Steam Deck upgrade is nice, but not enough to make me think it's a worthwhile upgrade if you already have one. What I think is what they expected.

I actually prefer that they slow roll the performance upgrades, so waiting another couple of years for a true "Steam Deck 2" is fine with me.

I expect that a lot of developers use the Steam Deck specs as a ceiling for how hardware intensive they make their games (especially outside of the AAA space), so releasing new upgrades slowly prevents me from having to constantly spend money upgrading to more powerful devices.

The Nreal ones actually. Although I believe they are the same as the Xreal - they rebranded a couple months after I bought mine.
I love them. They are exactly what I wanted a portable way to have a big screen for the Deck, Switch, or iPad.

Sorry, I knew they rebranded, but couldn't remember which the new brand was.

I'm pretty interested in those, but haven't researched enough to know if they're worth the money for me yet. This type of thing I wish I could try in person.

A short drive to IA and you can test all you want.

Ha. Nice. I could almost buy a set for the gas money

I really enjoy the first generation Steam Deck a lot, but I know myself, and I plan to buy an OLED. Honestly, the screen alone is reason enough for me (the one on my Switch OLED is gorgeous), but add in HDR and I am sold.

I continue to live in blissful ignorance about the benefits of OLED. Which is easy to do when you are poor

I’m also very interested in this type of device. My ideal house has zero big obvious tech and that includes TVs/monitors.

I keep looking at the VITURE ones. Are Nreal better?

Everything should run the same, but almost every part's been upgraded, even the high-end model's case.

Improvements from the reviews I watched yesterday:

Screen - Nicer looking and higher refresh rate. Slightly bigger with smaller bezel
Lower power processor (die shrink) +bigger battery=noticeably longer run time and reduced fan noise
Much faster wifi
Bluetooth 5.3
Bigger drives by SKU

Digital Foundry calls the new screen the best they've seen on any handheld gaming device. I don't know if that's an impressive statement.

They are showing very slightly better performance due to the faster memory (that GPU and CPU share). Basically every hardware change Valve made improves battery life. It's not just a bigger battery.

Totally want the OLeD version but my wallet is going to be watching for gen 1 versions being sold by others to finance the cost of upgrading

I just ordered a pair of Air2 Pro’s, plus prescription lenses. I was just on a flight where I would have loved to have these. The 30 day return window should be enough time for me to decide if the display quality is worth keeping them. But the feedback I see online sure seems strong.

I’ve also ordered a USB-C charger splitter, which should allow me to plug in my monster USB-C PD battery pack and power both devices during use.

New OLED would be cool, but with the amount of time I actually use my deck right now, which is not very much. I'm holding off until v2.

If anyone is like me and liked the old RC car game Re-Volt back on the Dreamcast/N64/Win98 PCs, the game was added to Steam last year, and the RVGL source port works great on Steam Deck, easily installed by using Luxtorpeda. (Make sure to update Luxtorpeda to the latest version - I had an older version and RVGL was missing textures and displaying a mostly black screen).

Looks like all the LCD models are discounted on Steam now to make room for OLED coming tomorrow.

Yeah, they’re selling them until the stock is depleted for the 64gb and 512gb LCD models. The only LCD model they’re going to keep in stock is the 256gb at the new lower price.

The new SteamOS 3.5.5 update brings HDR external monitor support to all Decks so now you can use an HDR TV or monitor and get nice colors even if you have the original LCD Deck. Also adds VRR support in SteamUI mode. Unfortunately SteamUI mode still doesn’t seem to support higher refresh external displays so you still need to go into desktop mode to increase refresh rate.

That's incredible! HDR support on Linux has been a pipedream for a long time now... thank goodness for those wizards at Valve who are making all this stuff happen. I have been consistently delighted at how much they continue to put into that ecosystem

I received these, and sadly I was underwhelmed. I found it difficult to get the glasses in a position where I could see the bottom of the screen, no matter which nose pad holder I tried. Even that aside, it just didn’t feel like a good enough experience for the investment. It’s in the ballpark, but not there yet.

I ended up impulsively buying the new limited edition 1 tb OLED model because I am a weak person. I’m going to sell my old 256gb model once the new one is safely in hands in 1-2 weeks but I’m going to give a coworker first dibs- if he’s not interested I’ll pop back here for anyone interested.

They are certainly delivering on bringing some of the best parts of console gaming to handheld PC gaming.

My limited experience with HDR in Windows makes me think it is still hit or miss whether HDR works well on PC. If I'm wrong about that I should give HDR on PC another try. Short term I'm going to try using my Deck with my HDR TV and hope that doesn't make me wish I had HDR on my desktop PC as well.

Damnit. Now I am tempted. Do you think the anti glare will lower the OLED quality? I have that now, but I can't tell.

Anyone here managed to get Steam Deck to turn on HDR mode when connected to a HDR external display?

I've tried all of my USB-C docks/adaptors and haven't had any success. 4k@60hz works but the Deck always says my current display does not support HDR. I'm going to try some other cables next.

pandasuit wrote:

Didn't they just put out an update for the Dock that explicitly enables this?

I put in an order for the Limited Edition OLED Deck. The sum of the improvements were enough for me to bite the bullet. I'm sure I'll be able to find someone to buy my 1TB LCD Deck.

I also finally wised up and ordered a much slimmer hard case for the Deck, after suffering the original case being such a space-eater in my backpack when traveling. Wish I had thought of it a couple months ago.
