Welcome folks, and happy “107th Anniversary of the opening of the first supermarket” week!

On 11 September 1916, in Memphis Tennessee, the first self-service grocery store (including checkout lanes and shopping carts) opened its doors. Its name was Piggly Wiggly. There are still 499 Piggly Wiggly stores open today. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you regret your character naming choices.

Now that Starfield has departed, a whole bunch of AAA and indie titles are emerging, like the grass springing back up when an elephant steps off of it.

Mortal Kombat 1 is Mortal Kombat’s second reboot. It’s got all the fighting game features for the now generation, with a story mode that builds on MK11’s tower mode. It’s all geared up for multiplayer, and the visuals are super shiny. The big new gameplay feature is the kameo system, where you call in another fighter from the roster for powerful combos, ending in more of those signature bone-crunching animations.

The Crew Motorfest is Ubisoft’s latest entry in its driving series, which keeps going despite always watching Forza, Gran Turismo, and Need For Speed take the podium. Motorfest offers a bunch of different racing experiences, called playlists, from Japanese street racing to Formula 1. The main game is open world driving events around Hawaii. Vroom vroom.

Pokemon Scarlet / Pokemon Violet: The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero - Part 1: The Teal Mask is a long-ass name for some DLC. It’s a new area with 4 biomes, made available a few hours into the main game. If you liked Pokemon Scarlet / Violet’s more open-world formula, this is giving you another big scoop of that, with the magic ingredient of 100 more Pokemon, from earlier games. Gotta catch ‘em all? There’s more now.

Inspector Gadget: Mad Time Party has you play as the renowned, clumsy detective from our childhoods. Thematically, this should be a QWOP-type slapstick game where Inspector Gadget pratfalls through missions, but to make it more fun for kids, he can actually be quite effective with his gear—enough for solving puzzles and light 3D platforming in a mini open world.

Hauma is a detective noir game set in Munich. It unfolds like a visual novel as you investigate, talk to people, and collect stuff. It all comes together in everyone’s favourite detective game mechanic: the mind palace board, where you connect your clues to make progress.

Tavernacle is one of those tower defense games where you send your little dude around to gather stuff to build the towers while the swarms are coming. Looks like a fun co-op game that’s frenetic, but not as stressful as other couch co-ops like Overcooked.

MythForce is a fantasy dungeon crawler inspired by 1980s Saturday morning cartoons. They’ve nailed the look and feel of those old cartoons, but in higher res. There’s even plenty of cheesy, soft metal anthems.

It’s multiplayer where you play as one of the preset characters: a mage, rogue, or knight who came straight out of a 3-episode arc in She-Ra. The dungeon crawling has rogue-lite elements—when you die, you start the dungeon from the start, but with all your gear and XP from that run.

Usually these kinda games are in third-person like Diablo, watching your little dude go around, but this is in first-person, which makes all the difference. You’re not watching He-Man, you’re being He-Man. The player arm art really sells it: the mage’s book is in one hand and the other hand draws a spell from the pages as you prepare it. The rogue’s arm comes forward as you stretch your bow. The knight’s chunky shield and mace are always visible. And in multiplayer, you can see your buddies look super cool doing their moves.

MythForce gets the GOTW for executing best on its premise. The preview videos look super fun. I have no idea how long it is, how complex the combat is, or how the gear progression goes, but it could be a nice change of pace when I’m done sorting my inventory in BG3.

No mention in the write-up of Baby Shark: Sing & Swim Party?

SMH.

Every day can be a Baby Shark Sing Party with a 3 year old in the house…

I'd totally forgotten that Mythforce was dropping this month and week... I may have to move some pieces to pick it up later in the year to play with my daughter. As well as the Pokemon DLC, which will also be picked up later in the year to play with her.

Birthday week and I'm not buying any games for once. Mostly because I'm still busy with Starfield. But also because Spider-Man and Mario are coming in Oct
