00:44:59 Anticipation for Upcoming Games

My most memorable (and strange) experience with anticipation for a game was definitely Hyper Light Drifter. I watched this first trailer and was absolutely blown away.

I backed it on Kickstarter and eagerly awaited the release.

When it finally came out, it was manifestly clear that I was not good enough at video games to enjoy it. After some really frustrating attempts to get past a boss over the course of a week that never were successful, I concluded it was just too hard for me and I uninstalled it.

However, that first trailer was and still continues to be influential on me. The trailer is a significant influence on my homebrew TTRPG setting and I still love how well-executed it is. The trailer has wound up being worth more to me than the game itself, which is just weird to say.

Being terribly old, I have a memory of one of the first games I was obsessed by that dates back to 1984. I was a just embarking into my teenage years when I caught a glimpse of an ad in a Computer and Video Games magazine that had a double page spread for the game Elite. The game was initially being released for the BBC Micro, a computer that only the very wealthy owned. As a ZX Spectrum owner, I had to wait another year before it arrived. My patience was rewarded with one of the greatest games ever made and I still cite it as one of my favourites almost 40 years later.

Bringing it more up to date, I would say Halo, Halo 2, Halflife 2, Mass Effect (does not start with an 'h' though), and Zelda - Breath of the Wild. Clearly my taste has served me well. At least I like to think so.
