[News] The Internet Was a Mistake

A thread for updates on the various ways the internet is destroying everything and the undying hellsites of social media. Let's all laugh at the abyss.

FOX had a show in 2021 called Alter Ego, where contestants would sing backstage while motion capture technology created digital avatars that appeared in their place.

They looked like total dogsh*t.

I'm not kidding when I say 19-year-olds living in their parents homes have created more interesting and well-crafted PNG and Vtuber rigs than what FOX managed to do here.

Once the tech industry turned to a new, more promising trend — generative AI — the fate of the Metaverse was sealed.

Seems about right - I'd argue that generative AI is a prerequisite to the Metaverse anyway. Hopefully the real Metaverse arrives right around when I'm ready to retire so I can enjoy it.

The real Metaverse won't arrive until after the Bell Riots and World War 3 reorganize the fundamental structure of our society so we can have it without a bunch of corporate bullsh*t.

It's going to be a wild ride.

Tucker Carlson: Fired Fox anchor Carlson to relaunch show on Twitter

Ousted Fox News host Tucker Carlson has announced he is relaunching his show on Twitter.

He made the announcement in a video on the social media platform, two weeks after being fired.

In the video, Mr Carlson said: "You can't have a free society if people aren't allowed to say what they think is true."

Fox News fired Mr Carlson shortly after settling for $787.5m (£634m) in a defamation lawsuit.

"Speech is the fundamental pre-requisite for democracy," Mr Carlson said in his clip on Tuesday.

"Amazingly, as of tonight, there are not that many platforms left that allow free speech."

LOL, Parler died so Twitter could become Parlitter. Twarler. Whatever.

200% chance he negotiated this with Elon too.

If you thought that show was wild before, it's really going to be something when he's interviewing @GroyperLord1488 in three months.

What was dangerous about Tucker was his platform on Fox allowing him to spread fringe internet conspiracies and racism to a mainstream audience, now he’s just going to be another conspiratorial racist ranting on the internet.

Yes and no. What he needs now is a place to keep people aware of him while he figures out what's next and this gives him that. It will cut him off from his current base of old white people you try to avoid during the holidays, but will keep him going while he works on getting set up somewhere he can get back in with that group and ensures that a group of evangelists will be around to try and get those old white people back on board.

Still a pretty big blow but I'm not writing him off yet as much as I would love to

News that CBS is doing a Matlock reboot starring Kathy Bates has convinced me that the studios are already using AI.

f*ck that. I want Kathy Bates Murder, She Wrote.

This is interesting to me... I wonder what the numbers are...

How many Fox viewers don't have twitter or are not interested/able to access it (aka- old white people)
vs
How many people that weren't Fox viewers are twitter users or will start using it in order to watch him. (aka- neo-nazi fascists)

As always, you can say what you want. You just can't say what you want without consequences.

You know, a friend and I were just talking about "who would you cast as the detective in a MSW-inspired elderly-lady-solves-mysteries series in 2023?"

Not "who would you cast as Jessica Fletcher in a reboot," because f*ck that noise, there's no Jessica Fletcher but Angela Lansbury, but more of a sequel series or spiritual successor type situation.

I could see Kathy Bates, but I think I'd put my vote behind esteemed character actress and fugitive from the law Margot Martindale, who believe it or not is ten years older now than Angela Lansbury was when MSW premiered.

They aren't putting a Twitter stream up on the TVs of every gym in America. It's going to be a massive, catastrophic decrease in audience for ol' Tucky.

Anybody seen Bill O'Reilly lately?

No?

It's Fox.

Old white people don't leave home or their guns without it.

Oh yeah, I have a bunch of his computer books.

His tweets are constantly being promoted.

So are his books on my kindle recommendations. I think his is because I enjoy reading a decent pop-history book now and then, and Papa Bear enjoys writing books that pretend to be in that genre.

Also, to be fair, "I haven't heard from/of" absolutely doesn't mean "unimportant" or "not popular" these days.

I have never seen a moment of Yellowstone or The Chosen and those are shows far, far, far more popular than, say, Succession is, it's just that the critic class is only talking about one of them.

Elon Musk Says He's Hired a New Twitter CEO

Elon Musk is apparently in the mood to follow-up on promises this week. After months of silence on the topic, the world’s second richest man has announced he’s selected a successor to take over the role of Twitter CEO. “Excited to announce that I’ve hired a new CEO for X/Twitter,” Musk wrote in a tweet (of course). “She will be starting in ~6 weeks. My role will transition to being exec chair & CTO, overseeing product, software, & sysops,” the billionaire added.

My roll will transition to still controlling everything until she can't stand it anymore and leaves.

Today they updated the terms on inactive accounts. Instead of something reasonable like measured in years, they are going with 30 days. Just to f*ck with NPR.

I'm going to need Bluesky or Spoutable or something to become the new place, so we can get away from this maniac.

Nah, there's plenty of sycophants out there. See the current head of Safety.

Alright now I need to write a script to Marshawn my account every two weeks.

I used this site to make a really quick and easy bot to post quotes from On Tyranny.

Edit: Oh, it shut down. F*ck Elon!

Yeah, API stuff is done for without spending money.

I think I can do it with an automated browser-based web testing framework like Selenium or Capybara. But I've put all of a minute and a half into thinking about the problem.

I'm sure there's a server less solution in AWS.

I've been writing Selenium for weeks at work. Not doing it in my free time.

L. Ron Musk deactivating unused accounts will only further reduce whatever credibility the platform has left if he actually lets those accounts go up for grabs.

Actually, put me down for $20 on this.

I think it's far more likely he's just setting up a glass cliff.
