Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

I can see where you're coming from. In some ways, reminds me of this commercial of utterly depressing dystopia:

Seems pretty far-fetched if you ask me. An old person like that, playing a video game? No way.

Spoiler:

Also did they really spoil how to build a raft in the freaking commercial??

I used a Switch Voucher to preorder this one. They redeemed it on May 5 and I'm now allowed to preload. Not a bad way to save some $$$ on Nintendo games if you are sure you want certain titles.

Confession: Watching IGN's review made me want to commit various acts of piracy by:

1. Buying and downloading the game on the eShop
2. Hacking my Switch
3. Rip the game
4. Run it on my PC at 60fps

Well, good news - so long as you purchase the game it's not piracy, and emulation is perfectly legal.

I'm gonna do the same myself (or at least attempt to do so...)!

Edit: Looks like Nintendo has issued a DMCA takedown on the critical tools required to copy the keys from your Switch that you need to run your own ROMs, so until that's resolved, no legal path to emulation unless you already have a copy of the tools.

* watch at 4:43 the scene they show looks so much better in Breath of Wild. I am not sure what they wanted to show but it didn't make me impressed with Tears.

Skill Up review

SwitchUp

Review embargo ended today, and the reviews are mostly 10s across the board, with the occasional 9.5. Looks like they pulled it off.

Kinda crazy to see it reviewing as well as the original. Excited to dive in this weekend.

Nintendo doesn't get to decide what is and is not legal. Their DMCA takedown expresses their opinion that it is not legal, but until and unless it's challenged in court, it remains only their opinion.

Edit: Never mind, I misunderstood what you were saying. The problem isn't that the tools aren't legal, it's that the they're not available through the usual channels at the moment.

I watched the ign review and a few others and it’s has me really excited to play this. I honestly wasn’t that excited before because I didn’t love BOTW. I liked it but there were a lot of aspects that annoyed me. I knew it would be quality and I would play it, but now my expectations are much higher.

From what I've seen, the weapon system seems much better. There are more structured parts without losing the expansiveness and exploration. the story is much more engaging. There are recipes! The crafting and building seems great.

I am concerned with how big it is. Many reviews have said twice the size of BOTW. I don’t know if I’ll stick with it for the whole thing. But I’m sure what time I do spend with it will be fun.

Also, my favorite gaming podcast, Get Played, is doing a month of Zelda themed episodes, leading up to the last episode of the month a “we play you play” episode about TOTK. This weeks episode about the music and music theory of Zelda is a great jumping in point.

SkillUp said where BotW felt very open and empty, this one feels incredibly dense.

That’s all I needed to hear.

This is true of all Zelda games, even ones that are, looking back, not so great.

Still looking forward to 6pm tonight, but I’m skeptical that they can actually follow up on BoTW in a way that’s equally satisfying for me given what a complete surprise that first game was.

I haven't been so plugged into previews so I'm dodging reviews now to go in as in the dark as possible. There's a lot I enjoyed about BotW, though I never finished it (I think I got about half way before being distracted by something else.) The last Zelda game I finished with Legend of Zelda II, actually! Despite that, I've never regretted putting any time into a Zelda and I'm eager to see if this is the one that's going to get me to cross the finish line.

Same, which is why BoTW was such a surprise. I played basically nothing else for 6 months straight when I finally picked it up.

Best buy preorder should be delivered tomorrow. Very very excited!

One of the genius moves they made in Breath of the Wild is they balanced it so that when you got to the point where you felt like you were done, you could probably just head to the castle and kill Ganon for a satisfying finish. Not trying to throw shade on anyone who didn't realize this or otherwise care to do it, but it was nice that the game was set up that way. Hopefully the sequel will pull that off as well.

Yeah it was very chill. Beat the game whenever you're ready.

I beat the game and got every memory way back. But this week I've been finishing off some DLC and finding shrines I missed. Pretty fun, hit my Zelda legs back so to speak.

I am 100% playing this through emulation and not on underpowered Switch hardware. Firing up Metroid Prime Remastered at 2x resolution forever ended any chance of me picking up my Switch again.

The Yuzu team refused to implement some fixes prior to TOTK's release, but that's about to no longer be a problem.

Also, Nintendo with their DMCA carpet-bombing can go f**k themselves.

I think I need to dig into this. I have a Switch of the vintage that it supports recovery mode. I'm just paranoid to break it in case N bans me and locks me out of all my E-purchases.

Same.

Why is everyone pretending they’re actually going to dump the game and not just go to their favorite torrent (torrents are still the thing, right?) site to download the game?

I've not looked into it in depth, but I understand Switch requires machine+game specific encryption keys so dumping games along with the keys is actually easiest. I could be wrong.

I'm baffled and wondering what I'm seeing different from several of you, because I did watch that Digital Foundry video in full and found myself quite impressed with the additional polish that the new release has on show over Breath of the Wild, on top of the massive amount of new/updated content.

Maybe it's because I've kept myself mostly on blackout until now (and was only curious about performance improvements with the new game) but I'm very pleasantly surprised to see that the game really doesn't seem to be "too big for Switch".

I mean, sure, I'd be thrilled to be playing it on updated hardware instead (full HD 60fps would be a delight) but it looks like I'll be even more satisfied with TotK than I was was BotW with hearing that in addition to an even grander world to explore, the main-line content is more robust and has more structure for the narrative throughline.

Sounds like there's a very real chance that Tears of the Kingdom has the potential to land at the top of my list of favorite Zelda titles, or at least at the same top echelon as Link to the Past / Link Between Worlds.

I never had any complaints about how BotW ran on Switch. The art style did a lot of heavy lifting, making the game appear smoother than it actually was.

Though I’m also (thankfully — being mad about game performance all the time seems depressing) the person with a 120Hz, VRR monitor who can’t really tell a difference between it and the 2013 iMac that preceded it and managed all of 45fps in The Witcher 3.

Your updates in the other thread have been fun to read. Living vicariously though others!

Best Buy preorder ready for pickup tomorrow. Son is very excited for it and I'll let him stay up later after his theater performance to play a bit.

I’m sure I’ll be fine playing TofK on my Switch just like I was fine playing BotW on it.

It's about that time. See y'all on the other side.

And so it begins.

Hard copy acquired.

My son will get first dibs while I finish Jedi: Survivor.

Just tagging into the thread. I'm preloaded, ready to run around hitting things with a stick so I don't break something more precious (and probably accidentally throwing the precious thing)
