Google Android catch-all

I always say "navigate to x" ;)

Tried that this evening, it didn't work for me, either, but possibly for different reasons. I'll try again tomorrow.

Well first you have to rock, then you have to roll
Open up with the pop pop, then let it go
That is how X is gonna give it to ya, going to give it to ya.

Okay, I didn't read this in rhythm the first time. I knew it was a quote or something. Reminds me of the time my college professor read some of the lyrics to "Wanna Be Starting Something" in a normal, conversational voice.

I always say "Go to" or "Go" e.g. "Go home" or "Go to Home Depot"

What is a good photo editor without a subscription?

I have been tasked to modify my mother in laws android phone to be as simple as possible. She has dementia and needs her phone to be as simple as open it and click a picture to call her daughter, me or her partner with a single tap.

I am an iphone person and have very little experience with android but I figure it can be done.

Can anyone give me pointers on what I should look at? I saw there is launchers that can be installed?

Tap a contact in the phone app.

Tap the 3 dot options

Tap "add to home screen"

I believe you can set certain numbers as emergency contacts, which makes them accessible from the lock screen (i.e. No need to unlock the phone to call them). It's still not one click but as close as I can think of to it.

I don't have experience with this, but try looking up "senior friendly android launcher" and you might find something useful to you.

What type of phone? Seems like some brands had a simple interface launcher option built in. And once you get it configured, you generally can lock the home screen in setup so that it can't be changed.

Its a Pixel 4a

A quick search doesn't show me how to do it on a Pixel, but Nova Launcher allows it. So that's at least an option if you want to replace the launcher.

Well, I set it to only show a couple of contacts on the first page, removed the extraneous apps and locked it down. Android is pretty dang flexible. If thats not enough ease of use for her I am not quite sure what to do. Thanks for your assistance all!

My wife's Nokia Android phone is on its last legs, and we're looking into replacing it with a OnePlus Nord 3 5G, which has options for 8GB RAM/128GB storage or 16GB RAM/256GB storage. 128GB storage is plenty for her needs, but is 16GB RAM really necessary? I've been an iPhone user for so many years that I cannot tell anymore

My wife doesn't game on her phone, but we would like the phone to last for 4 - 5 years if possible.

16gb is usually not necessary unless you are gaming, doing a lot of multitasking, or keep a lot of browser tabs open. Android will swap things in and out of memory quite well. That being said, some apps are poorly written and bloated, so YMMV.

Just a note, I think OnePlus gives 4 years of security updates (same as Samsung). I wouldn't recommend using a phone after that lifespan. Google offers 7+ years of updates to the Pixel 8, and Fairphone is similar.

Anybody have experience with a reputable App Cloner? Got a second library card and Hoopla doesn't allow you to log into two libraries. Lots out there, but some look sketchy or have bad reviews. Don't want to pay a lot as I'm not sure if I'll actually use it.

If you have a Samsung phone with Knox, you can open a 2nd instance of an app from the Secure Folder.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a PDF reader/editor that is good for reading books and writing on PDF files? I need to be able to bookmark pages also.

My current use case is I have game books where I need to bookmark sections to jump between. These books also have character sheets that I need to mark up.

Currently I use two PDF tools one for reading and one for marking of the pdf. Both are great at what they do but I think there is probably a pdf reader/editor that does both these things.

Used to use Fox It. But I think they recently split off editing functions into a paid app.

Still think it's a much better reader than Adobe and certainly less of a resource hog on Windows.
