Spoiler:I didn't think that'd be a valid word. I've always understood it to be an acronym of NSFW origin.
It's in the crossword often and I don't think I've ever seen it clued as an acronym. So, I think, as far as the NYT is concerned, it's moved past that point and is now just a normal word. The fact that it's in the crossword so often (and that it was literally the only non-plural "word" that fit) is the only reason I thought to guess it.

I was making a joke with my post, but I was curious if that'd be a valid word. Interesting to know that it is.
I actually don't plan to ever change my starter word because my fear is if I ever do then that's the day that word will be the answer.
