The Last of Us Remake, Factions and HBO TV series - Catch All

... I used a stick.

I hesitate to ask what for.

For all I knew, there were 100 more infected or bad humans after that one scene. Joel should have conserved ammo.

New NoClip documentary on the making of The Last of Us' remake.

Oh. I’ll enjoy watching that.

This is a great spoilercast.

No, there very much was not.

I'm not sure how anyone could say that, with any conviction, after watching that scene. It seemed way more creepy in the show than the game too. I see that Rad edited his comment so I might be responding to a different question but this sums up what I watched.

Just finished the final episode and am really looking forward to how they handle the second game. They could easily make two seasons out of it.

I was saying that of the game, not the show. I'd previously said:

explicitly rapey they made David in the final confrontation. I just played that part in the remake, and he's a creep that reminded me strongly of the FLDS polygamists who are roughly in the area, but by the steakhouse, David pretty clearly just wants to kill Ellie.

I feel like that scene is intense and distressing enough without that embellishment.

To be clear,:

Spoiler:

"FLDS polygamist" means David is a rapist, but not they way the show had him, which I think was unnecessary.

They have already announced part 2 will be more than one season

To me the ending of the game felt much more shocking than the show.

Spoiler:

I think a big reason for that is that we're quite used to TV shows starring anti-heroes having grim, unpleasant endings. It's still relatively rare in video games, at least in the AAA space, where we are used to having the standard power fantasy fulfilment of achieving the stated goal and 'saving the world' at the end.

The NoClip documentary is excellent. Shouldn’t be a surprise really.

Edit: In other news, it sounds like we’ll likely hear more about the new Factions game sometime this year. I really hope that means Summer Gamefest or earlier.

These were fun. I enjoy the retro style game art and comic covers people do for The Last of Us.

OK, gotcha. I missed what you had previously wrote.

Nice!

Here’s a small sample of the incredible fan art I saw during the series run.

I’ll put this in a spoiler tag. It’s a gorgeous drawing of the characters in episode eight.

Just a moment from a publicity shoot for the show. Link to Instagram.

Edit: Apparently the show was astonishingly successful. Only a good thing from my perspective.

Edit 2: “The Contractor”

Edit 3: Here’s a link to an article that, in turn, links to Craig Mazin’s script for episode 3

The Last of Us multiplayer game is delayed.

Jason Schreier put out a short report about it, and Naughty Dog put out a tweet about it as well.

Damn. Painful as it is and it really does smart, I’d rather they take the time they need to making sure it’s right.

I’d love to know if it’s technical problems, i.e. the poor launch of TLOU Part 1 on PC, that made them reassess or if the collapse of many recent live service games (and possibly an honest assessment from Bungie) has made them rethink the game’s structure and scope.

(Looks like I don’t get to read that Bloomberg article without subscribing.)

Edit: This Push Square article elaborates. Sadly, it all has a ring of truth to it. Hopefully they can pivot to something that’ll work better even if it’s a more traditional multiplayer.

Edit 2: Ooookay. I’ve moved the new Factions game into the ‘Sometime in the future’ section of my games to play list and added all the titles from the Showcase that I’m excited about (of which there are many) into ‘Play soon’ and I feel a bit better.

Kinda Funny’s reaction to the news on Factions.

I don’t agree with much of their assessment of the Sony live service games. I can now see the wisdom of releasing Apex Legends without any lead in. Live service games are all the worst idea in the world until, like Valorant, like Tarkov, they succeed and then suddenly they’re one of the immovable juggernauts who are squeezing out everyone else.

Andy and Greg may have found their live service games but I haven’t. Sony studios creating high quality games like Marathon and, if it survives, a new Factions has me very excited.

At the 27 mins mark Jeff Grubb gives his refined thoughts on the state of the new Factions mode. Again, sadly, I think he could be right.

Edit: The thin but significant silver lining in all this is Spikeout and I, in anticipation of playing Factions together, have picked Uncharted 4 multiplayer back up.

This is a very relaxed chat with Laura Bailey.

Another incredible interview. Well worth listening to.

Ok I’ve kinda got to add these as well. I’m watching the Nico Parker one.

Woot!

(Read the bottom post first.)

Edit: The Last of Us season 2 will likely start filming next year and be out in 2025.

It sounds like there is still some work happening on the Factions multiplayer. I can see them rounding off the edges on what they have and putting it out.

Kaitlyn Dever (who was phenomenal in Justified) could be Abby.

.

Here's a trailer for the mode:

I haven't had a chance to check out any impressions yet, but I'm very excited based on the trailer alone. It looks fantastic. I will happily shell out $10 to upgrade just for this.

I like the idea of this mode more than a multiplayer pvp mode. Still might not play it, but there’s more of a chance than multiplayer which I’d never touch.

It looks a very good. The runs aren’t enormously long (five areas then a boss) but there is probably a ton of replayability. I replayed encounters a lot in TLOU Part 1 because the fights were to intense but the story in TLOU 2 didn’t lend itself to that. The combat randomised and divorced from the story sounds ideal.

I can see that. I was intimidated out of playing the original Factions but I’d have played the heck out of a new one and still would if it eventually appears.

The Last of Us: Online has been officially cancelled. Hearing their reasoning, that it would have taken over the studio if successful, I can live with it.

Ironically the multiplayer was the one project of the three that I though would definitely arrive.

Yeah, obviously any statements need to be taken with grains of salt, but if indeed their reasons are the case, I'm very glad. Dare we hope this means fewer studios will get destroyed chasing perpetual live service cash?

SpacePProtean wrote:

Hopefully. It's just a shame that they couldn't make a multiplayer mode that didn't need to be constantly monitored and updated. That just isn't the world we live in anymore. AAA companies can't seem to justify that kind of investment without massive perpetual returns.

Kaitlyn Dever has been cast as Abby. Phenomenal choice.

Acting-wise, yes, obviously--hell, circa 2013, I probably said the ideal adaptation would have Dever as Ellie, and Tim Olyphant as Joel. But, I wonder about the physicality. Abby being obviously physically imposing is a big part of her character, and Dever can buff up, obviously, if she so chooses, but she'll still be pretty comparatively short. Then again, seems most women actors these days are diminutive, Hollywood let Mackenzie Davis and Elizabeth Debicki through, and then hung up "Must be 5'3" or less to act" sign. And maybe when you're not playing, the contrast between scrawny Ellie and hulking Abby will matter much less. It feels exceptionally churlish to quibble over a get like this, I sincerely want to tell myself "Where the f*ck do you get off, bro? I know you've seen Short Term 12!", but those were my first thoughts.
