NCAA Basketball 2022-2023 Catch-all

Louisville Twitter and radio are a mad house this morning. It's going to be a long off-season.

Maybe the women will make another run. ACC runner up and expected 4 seed.

If not, baseball is 12-1 and top 10. Maybe a CWS run will help.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to making history as the first pre-season #1 to not make the NCAAT. Gotta love setting that bar!

Once the sun sets on the last game for the season, I imagine conversation boards will explode.

And.. thankfully its over. Cal loses to WSU in the first round of the tournment ending a 3-29 embarassment of a season.

Game ended about 2 minutes ago, and from what I can tell Fox is still coach of Cal, so already a colossal failure on the administration's part.

Call stands alone!
We're not the worst power conference team. Thanks buddy

Once again, the good shooting UNC team shows up. I wish we were more consistent, but I'll take the win.

Looks like NCSU cruising too. All 3 NC teams win today in Greensboro.

They're absolutely crushing VT. I thought we'd see more from them, but NCSU is putting on quite the show.

Looks like you're getting a new coach.

And they do it on the day of Cal's annual Big Give.. pretty sure that's not a coincidence. I'll gladly make my booster donation knowing he's gone.

Nobody talking about Syracuse and Boeheim? 46 years.

Kind of surprised they hire an assistant. Are they not watching Louisville?

Thought they might grab Pitino from Iona honestly.

Watching ACC mostly today. Miami barely held off a late rally from Wake. But now Duke is cruising over Pitt.

Annnnnnnd that'll do it for the Heels. UVA looked like a team that knew exactly what they wanted to do. UNC looked like a group of guys that happened to show up wearing the same uniform. Despite that, they cut it to 2 a couple of times, but just could not get any kind of cohesive stop after that.

Ugly. Time to pull the curtain on this season. Way to make history, boys!

Sorry. I hate UVA. Their pace and style is the opposite of fun.

It really is the antithesis of exciting basketball. Half-court, grind-it-out, slow-paced stuff. But I tell ya, they move the ball well. This led them to multiple back door cuts. and they scored a bunch. We missed a number of free throws, and whiffed some wide open looks from 3.

It's also frustrating to watch UVA hard-hedge on those screens. UNC never tried to change their response! Good lord. Frankly, some of the blame for that failure has to go to Coach Davis and staff. I mean, you've seen this same response to your sets ALL SEASON. You'd think that by now you'd have come up with some alternative methods to handle it.

But in the end, this was a team that should never have been ranked preseason #1. They had a Cinderella run to the title game last year, and were basically ~60 seconds from another title. But they NEVER looked like that team this year. Manek missing was part of it, but the rhythm and cohesion that showed in those 6 games never made much of an appearance this time.

I wonder if they'll accept an NIT invite, should one come. How often do teams turn it down?

It's complete bullsh*t. They foul ball screens 30 or 40 times a game and it never gets called. I don't understand why they are officiated different than the other 362 teams but it's sickening.

Louisville did in 87. Year after the title we said screw the NIT. But that was also the year that the dumbass Metro Conference let Memphis State play in the conference tournament even though they had a NCAA postseason ban. And for some dumb reason they didn't give the AQ bid to Louisville, the runner up. Stupid move by the conference but also the committee could have overruled.

The lack of appreciation for UVA's play is sad. Being at their games is great fun. The crowd is more hyped and excited when they are on defense than offense. It's awesome. Their title run in 2019 included a couple of the most exciting games I've ever watched. Go HOOS.

I love defense. I love traps, zones, full court pressure. It's all fun.

UVA is not fun. They deliberately muck up the game. They kill time between possessions and on offense. There are always in the bottom 5 of tempo in the country (361 of 363 currently). If there was no shot clock they would be the team holding the ball for 10 minutes at a time trying to win games 6-4 or something.

And again that hard hedge is a foul. Not good defense, a cheap foul to screw up the other teams offense. They should have all 5 starters foul out every game. But the refs let them do it. f*ck em

Much funner to watch a team that plays together and plays hard on defense than a team that just runs up and down the floor playing hero ball. It's why I don't like nba basketball either. No defense and just a bunch of iso 1:1. Boring.

The 2019 title run was amazing. They had some serious nail biters in those last games against Purdue, Auburn, and Texas Tech. I can also absolutely acknowledge that UVA is a master of that particular style without admiring it.

I do recognize that the UVA crowd has bought in. They cheer HARD for shot clock violations!

I may also be a bit sour about how well it absolutely seems to stymie UNC. It's the polar opposite of how we want to play.

This is a pretty good summation of UNC's season:

"On Thursday night, in a very quiet locker room inside the Greensboro Coliseum, they were finally forced to confront their ultimate failure, the most disappointing team in the modern era of college basketball."

Been a lot of final four teams that missed the tournament the next season. Maybe not as many with so much production returning. But still plenty of failures to go around.

Truly, cannot praise the ACC's seating chart for the tournament enough:

So they'd trade places with this years Cal team?

Probably not, but measuring disappointment is going to partially depend on the eye of the beholder. Heisenberg's disappointment uncertainty principle.

I realize I'm coming across fairly whiny, and I apologize for that. I've got some acquaintances that are absolutely delighting in this turn of events for UNC.

Why can’t Ohio State just lose and put us all out of our misery!?

Missouri got hot from 3. Poor Tennessee

Hah, well this is why GWJ is such a safe space for college sports fans, because all you have to do is look to my team to say "at least we're not Cal". It's my gift to all of you

Did it to themselves with the turnovers. Miss ZZ.

Ags come back from down 13 at the half to win with a little breathing room! We made one from the arc all game. Love this team.

Vandy beat UK. 12-0 run near the end of first half and never gave up the lead the second.

They are now 6-5 vs UK all time in the SEC tournament. The only team with a winning record.

And Stackhouse was awesome in the post game SEC coverage. As they were wrapping up he called out the announcers, "maybe next time y'all will pick us" haha.

I think as a floor coach, Stackhouse is pretty good. As a college head coach (CEO) and as a recruiter, he's really not doing that great of a job. He reportedly has blocked half the fanbase on social media. Head coaches shouldn't even pay attention to fan responses in the first place, you can never come out ahead. He also doesn't seem to care much about recruiting at a hard school to get players into in the first place.
