This is brilliant. It has a lot in common with Adam Curtis’ documentary “I Can’t Get You Out of My Head”.

Adam Curtis also spends a lot of time on the fact that we are stuck in a period of time where we’re not progressing a society and that the powerful have given up even trying to solve problems.

His diagnosis is that this is caused by a loop where the little guy can’t influence d real change and the ultra wealthy have a hammer lock on the levers of power.

Seeing this the politicians respond with nostalgia and computer systems that always deliver the past, never a vision of the future.

I think they’re quite aligned and both right about the problem.

The powerful have solved society, but only for them.

Some perspective on the culture war: remember that in the early 80s, people thought DUI and seatbelt laws would make us a communist country.

Not my video, but you can consider this video to be subtitled "Why I, and others, left GWJ"

Didn't watch, is it a white guy in a truck complaining about how "woke" everything is?

I respect you enough to give it a try but at 42 minutes I don't know if I will make it through the whole thing

This tripe presents itself as middle of the road and sensible when it’s everything but.

Hats off to the video creator for speaking semi-sensible words, then having all the video examples subtly selling the same tired anti-woke ideology of the new right. It struck me as someone decrying propaganda at the same time as they actually spread it.

But you are still here?

That's one hell of an assumption to take on for yourself a heavily nuanced opinion of why some members of a community chose to step away. It's almost like you are framing your argument on your own personal feelings instead of considering the broader impacts of others when you make blanket statements.

FYI, your avatar is just feeding into the social media machine you are purposed to be fighting against

You are certainly correct I'm not speaking for everyone, but I am speaking for some who I still interact with, absolutely.

That's way too much #EnlightenedCentrism for me. Couldn't get past 10 minutes or so.

This video is a great candidate for 1.75 speed. What comes across as a paternalistic, preachy, and disappointed affect translates well to the faster pace. But it didn't make the content better sadly.

Top comment nails it: "I really liked this video. It re-affirmed all of my beliefs and biases."

Eh, not really a debate/discussion worth having on second thought.

Sweary Alton Brown makes a lot of sense. Tie it in to private equity and a lot may become clear.

That's funny, I left GWJ for a good long while because I was expected to be deferential to people arguing that I shouldn't have civil rights, obsessing over my genitals, and implying I'm a direct threat to children by just, being nearby. A lot of those people left GWJ with similar complaints to this video.

You can imagine I'm not terribly sympathetic.

It came up in the crypto thread (sorry for the derail), so here is Tom Frank giving a summary of his book, Listen, Liberal, which is about how the last 30 years of Democrats have abandoned the working class and left a huge opening for Republicans to take advantage of.

Don’t mind me. I’ve just been shouting into the void for years that Democrats were out of touch with the needs of the working American and getting yelled at for daring to criticize the party.

Great vid, well worth the watch.

The poem referenced at the end of the video.

It would be easier to not despair about the US, except most of our problems can only be fixed by first fixing gerrymandering and voting rights, which can now only be fixed by first fixing gerrymandering and voting rights.
