The Last of Us Remake, Factions and HBO TV series - Catch All

With my friends, I've talked about how I can envision getting to the end of the season calling it an amazing adaptation, but still feeling the game is the more challenging and possibly smarter text, as it makes you work for things a bit more, that scene and the following being a pretty decent example:

Spoiler:

It was a fine scene, but Joel talking about the tragedy of someone Ellie's age being exposed to violence feels a bit...like a sop for my mother. That's certainly a part of Joel's attitude in the game, but he also clearly recognizes how inevitable it is, and he mainly seems to not want Ellie having a gun because he doesn't trust her with one. It's much less, uh, "conventionally likeable" I suppose you could say.

Incase anyone hasn’t picked up on it, the next episode is going to be aired Friday night (Saturday morning in the UK) because of the Super Bowl.

Also, I am obsessed with this song at the moment even though it’s only featured in a trailer so far:

Excellent. Any idea when soundtrack for this season series will be out?(or is it? I couldn't find it)

Yeah, I don’t know. The versions of Take on Me I’ve found are fan creations I think. There has to be a sound track eventually, surely.

Edit: This is another great one.

I mustn’t stay up until two in the morning, I mustn’t stay up until two in the morning….

I admit it, I cheered when

Spoiler:

Savage Starlight

showed up. Also, really well done episode.

Fresh reminder that this franchise is emotionally draining. Also, CW for this episode:

Spoiler:

Harm to children, zombification of children, and suicide.

Joel's sniping skills are awesome. He did a great job, much better than my first attempt in the game

Great idea to put a content warning in a spoiler tag Rat Boy.

I thought it was an incredible episode. I suspect that last week I was coming down off a honeymoon period with the show, where I’ve been perpetually awestruck that one of my all time favourite games was being so sucessfully adapted.

Spoiler:

The Savage Starlight comic and how they used it was inspired. Sam and Ellie’s relationship was lovely and tragic. More so than in the game.

The numbers of infected and clickers that came out of that hole was way more than I expected.

I like that Joel’s assessment of the sniper was, ‘It’s dark and they have sh*t aim. They aren’t going to hit me.’

I thought it was notable how anxious Joel was whilst trying to snipe infected around Ellie. It was subtle but telling.

Really good episode. Enjoyed the use of Agnes Obel for the credits.

This video feels a bit self serving on HBO’s part at times but it’s lovely to see Keivonn Woodard having a great time on set. I hope he continues to get opportunities to use his considerable acting talent.

This has been a long week.

I literally said "Oh no" as soon as the episode opened knowing what eventually was going to happen. Also, do we have to start spoiler tagging for Part 2 already?

I'm finally caught up with the show as of tonight. It really is excellent.

Gustavo's music really did some heavy lifting in episode 6. They nailed Joel and Ellie talking about loss, undoubtedly one of the most iconic scenes from the game. It was close to shot-for-shot with the game version too.

It is fascinating to see how they are already setting up for Part 2 in big and small ways.

Spoiler:

I’m glad we got to see Jackson rather than having the fight at the dam (but I’m also glad we got a nod to the dam.)

I loved the episode in itself but there is a particular pleasure in seeing how they do certain sequences so much more efficiently and also have new character moments; fleshing out Joel and Ellie more than they ever could have in the game.

What an perfect cliffhanger ending to the episode. I’m glad I know what happens next.

My wife is enjoying the show and knows nothing about the games. I’m really hoping she doesn’t get spoiled on Part 2 at all. That said I knew everything about Part 2 before I played it and still found it very impactful.

An interview with the director of episode six (spoilers for the episode.)

So I never gave too many honks about the games. The first one passed me by and I had no desire to catch up when Part 2 came around, so I've been generally aware of the overarching plot from 1 and more filled in on the events of 2. When the series got announced, I told myself that this would finally be the way I'd actually digest the story (plus, I liked Mazin's Chernobyl). Kicked the can around after the premiere and only just got caught up last week, so this is my first week of watching in time for discourse.

Hot dang, this is some good work. I can't attest to anything re: faithfulness to the source, but from my lens, the characters are rich & well-performed (boy howdy that Pedro Pascal is gonna go places~), the Infected are sparingly used to maximum effect, and after this last episode, the character relationships have me thoroughly hooked.

Last week I was joking to my coworkers that, given the harshness of the material, the best part about being caught up on TLOU was that you didn't have to watch another episode for a whole week.

I've now changed my tune, please give it to me Now.

There are some changed details, but it's pretty faithful. They cut a lot of action and exploration sequences, and added some backstory. I think most of us see it as playing to the strengths of two different mediums.

If anything significant has been "lost" in translation, I think it's: (1) The video game world has more Infected (or feels that way). (2) You're constantly reminded that guns, ammo, and supplies are very scarce. (3) You're reminded frequently of Joel's capability for violence (even if necessary for survival).

Episode 6 was the first episode to miss for my wife and I. It wasn't bad, but felt overfilled for a single episode.

Spoiler:

My wife, never for a moment, bought that Joel wasn't going to go with Ellie. The whole Joel not going, then the two of them riding out of Jackson subplot, was less than 10 minutes.

In game or show, I don’t think the writers were attempting to create any suspense about whether Joel would go or not. It’s about the character and relationship development for Joel and Ellie.

I'd agree with the regards to the game and my non-gaming wife understood what the show was going for, they just didn't quite nail the execution. For me, it was the first time one of the emotional beats worked better in the game.

Apparently, speculation is at a fever pitch that the girl, glimpsed in the canteen whilst Joel and Ellie are eating, might be Dina, a character from Part 2 (Possible spoilers for Part 2 in the linked article.)

Spoiler:

I did like that, in game, there is a long horse ride after the ‘you’re not my daughter’ conversation during which Joel clearly regretted the exchange and when they stopped had decide to take Ellie the rest of the way.

For those of you who never saw it back in the day regarding the composer, this was super enlightening on how the composer made the music. He also did the excellent score to Babel.

Bella Ramsey better be nominated for some hardware later this year.

Edit: And Storm Reid, too.

Well, that episode was the DLC, which was kinda the best thing from the first game. So, great episode.

The one thing they couldn't do from the DLC in the episode because it relied too much on game mechanics is the stealth squirt gun fight, which I liked because it took the tension of the stealth mechanics of the base game and made it fun instead of terrifying/frustrating.

For sure.

Yep, really great episode. The previous one, we were mostly in agreement that it was the first one that really felt like it compressed too much, even though many of the individual scenes were really well done.

For my recent b-day, I got myself the remake game, and just barely I managed to catch Ellie snagging the toy for Sam. I feel proud.
