Help me build my PC: 2024 Catch-All

Just disable hdmi cec for that input on the receiver side and that should stop happening.

Is there a go-to bang for the buck processor these days? I have a very aging "Gameguru" system and I'm thinking about replacing the Mobo, CPU , & RAM. Preferably something that runs cool and quiet.

Edit: I also want a reason to use one of these. Seems like a killer deal.

I'm looking for a similar build... right now the 13400f is top of mind. You can drop down to the 13100 though and still get very good BFYB.

Not sure on the AMD side.

I like the low wattage on that.

Chairman, give some thought to replacing the power supply too, if it's that old...

Also smart for future proofing if gpu's keep using more and more power. The headroom will not go to waste.

I think you meant Evil but I heartily agree

I have a Corsair HX 850 so I think it has the headroom but I will def look into replacing due to age. Thanks.

Oh, sorry, yes. I always see FingerMao and get all flustered.

Ryzen 7000 series was an awful buy after release for 3 reasons: DDR5 prices, AM5 motherboard prices, and the CPU prices themselves. Two of the three have been eased somewhat, but the third still lingers.

DDR5 is no longer insanely priced. Over the last month, we've seen DDR5 kits on Amazon drop to new lows, way beneath what we were seeing last year.

AMD has had to cut prices of the CPUs, and released the non-X versions of chips. The 7600 non-X is $230 and generally within 1-3% of the 7600X, which itself is now a $250 CPU instead of a $300 one.

AM5 motherboard prices are still not great, though. Intel B760 motherboards can fairly readily be found in the sub-$200 range, while AMD B650 boards only seem to get there when an mATX one is on sale.

If I were redoing my system builds this year, I would consider a Ryzen knowing that the AM5 platform would give me a solid CPU upgrade path in a couple years. But if you're not going to take advantage of that, the motherboard premium hurts the value proposition.

OK, so I live close to the Cambridge Microcenter which could eliminate some of the cost issues. What about some of these bundles? I searched their site and they don't even carry the 13400f. Is it brand new or just not that popular?

https://www.microcenter.com/site/con...

Looks like those bundles stop at the x600 level of CPUs.

You can always pick up that 12600K bundle. The appeal of the 13400F is that it has 12600K level performance for $30 cheaper. But if you've got a motherboard bundle knocking $80 off your total price, you're going to blow right by that $30 difference and come out ahead.

That 7900X + mobo + RAM for $599 is pretty fantastic. Now that's a bundle that takes care of the AM5 motherboard cost.

Impulse buy senses tingling...

edit: holy sh*t that comes with 32GB of DDR5?!

I think I could stomach the 7900X. That would be my best bet for future proofing?

edit: Damn, sold out at Cambridge. I think the refresh stock pretty regularly though.

And it's DDR5-6000, no less.

If I was updating my build this year, I'd have to make the drive down to Santa Ana.

Tustin, I believe? I'll meet you on the way down ;P

That's the place. Gotta drop my wife at Disneyland first or I'll never hear the end of it.

I wonder if the monorail goes to Microcenter? The Peoplemover maybe?

I have nothing to add to the discussion about the bundle.. but I had no clue there was a Microcenter in California... barely 5 miles from John Wayne airport even..

Everytime I heard Microcenter I thought it was some mythical east coast store.

There used to be one in Santa Clara until a few years ago.

Yup. Right next door to the 20 plex.
I used to live 5 minutes away. But that was years ago.

We also used to have more Fry's than you could shake a stick at. All gone

And right next to the TJ Maxx & HomeGoods, in which my wife would blissfully roam, leaving me all the unhurried MicroCenter browsing time I could want.

When I worked in Santa Cruz, the one in Campbell was the closest one, and was my home base.

Fry's was always this mythical place growing up, there weren't any in Fresno or anywhere in the central Valley. I loved when work needed me to make a Fry's run and I could zip over the 17 after work (uh oh Californians talking about highways and driving again, Guru's gonna come yell at us) and do a little self-shopping while picking up stuff for work.

I loved Fry's! It was great how each store was themed. Just make sure to have done your research before going in as the sales staff knew nothing.

"My Fry's" was the Palo Alto store.

It turned into a Walmart Grocery store ☹️

I went to the Fry's in Palo Alto on work trips for Sun Micro, to pick up bits and bobs, and then at the end of the trip to grab a cheap motherboard or sound card. A little ramshackle and loosely organized, but fun.

OK, that bundle came back in stock so I just purchased it. I saw that AMD just came out with the 7900 (non X) which is 65w . Would have preferred that but this was too good to pass up.

Recommendations for cooling and power supply? Possible case? I might just reuse my case unless there is something that is totally worth it.

OK, I think I'm going to go with the LIAN LI O11 AIR MINI and Noctua NH-D15. So much for upgrading my current rig. Only things moving over are the video card and a couple storage drives!

Just make sure the NH-D15 will fit in the case you chose! That thing is a monster. But great!

It’s a big monster. You may want to check the configuration because I had to change it and barely had room for my GPU.
