[News] Post a D&D Picture

Previous incarnations of Cleveland/P&C/D&D have had an image thread, to handle political cartoons and other image-based stuff that doesn't belong in the general post-a-picture threads.

If any of them spawn an extended discussion, please spawn it off into its own thread. Replies to non-picture replies should take the form of a link pointing to a post on a different discussion thread.

And I shouldn't have to say it, but the images still need to abide by the rules.

"No company would care about increasing their annual net profit by 4%"

A lot of them wouldn't, if it meant lowering executive compensation and benefits.

If it's just the rank and file plebs, though, screw 'em.

Keldar said what I was thinking: “ What difference can that 3 billion dollars make that the other 70 billion doesn't?”

I’m not suggesting that $3B is a small amount of money in most comparisons. I am suggesting that it’s small in this comparison. Bring the ratio closer to home: if you were offered a raise with the choice of getting the offered raise and one of your co-workers losing their job, or getting 96% of the offered raise and nobody losing their job, could you justify taking the extra 4%?

Keep in mind that we’re not talking about the difference between profitability and loss, or even narrow profitability vs significant profitability. For MS, we’re talking about the difference between massive profitability vs slightly more massive profitability.

Or, going with a ratio of who that % of profit gain is likely to go to versus how many jobs were cut, it's probably something like "if you were offered a raise with the choice of getting the offered raise and 100 of your co-workers losing their job, or getting 96% of the raise and nobody losing their job"

Because let's be honest here, that $3 billion windfall isn't likely to be noticeably boosting 10,000 rich people's wealth.

Is it fair to say that you’re more onboard with (whatever the non-loaded version of ‘unbridled’ is) capitalism?

I think that if I ever have a company making billions in profit, I’ll have done things wrong.

I'm not onboard with it, but I accept it as the immutable reality of the world I exist in, and I have no choice but to participate in it, because "cave-hermit" isn't on my to-do list.

I absolutely think it's a toxic way to run things that is inhumane and the antithesis of human flourishing on a grand scale.

But honestly, that last paragraph can be equally applied to every period of history.

Ah, I understand. I agree with all of those things.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that capitalism WAS the environment as opposed to one possible system WITHIN the environment.

There exists a spectrum of behavior between the begrudging acceptance and "cave-hermit" binaries that you put forward.

Also, not a personal attack, but Microsoft doesn't really need anyone going to bat for them on this. They can weather being called sh*tty for profiting from downsizing their workforce after profiting from exploiting that same workforce just fine.

Addendum: the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing people that capitalism was commerce.

Gigantic companies and the people that run them and profit off them are intrinsically sociopathic. There’s always a tipping point where it’s just not possible to view things normally.

Agreed. That is why we need government, regulations, etc. They showed throughout history. Do we think Dickens we just making stuff up?

Good. Businesses putting investors ahead of everything else has proven to be one of the greatest flaws of later-stage capitalism. Great for the top-strata capitalists, sure, but terrible for everyone else.

Did Southwest lose slots for their disasters last month?

Some things really don't make sense

It was EU rules that--pre-COVID--required airlines to run 80% of their flights lest they risk losing gate slots. During COVID that number was revised downward to 50%, but the drop in travel meant that airlines still had to fly empty or mostly-empty flights to meet the new requirement because there just weren't enough passengers.

Oddly the tweet didn't include the real kicker that the 3,000 empty (or mostly-empty) flights that Brussels Airlines ran were completely dwarfed by the 18,000 empty or mostly-empty flights its parent company, Lufthansa, ran during the same period of time (late 2021/early 2022).

enemy of my enemy and all that but I don't really mind any efforts to sabotage american capitalism and remind people that workers really do have the power. The only sad part of this story is how ineffective her efforts were.

The title of the post on IMGUR is as true as the quote

Wow. You can see the moment his brain breaks.

No they didn't. They voted down her amendment

Also if the house passes something, the Senate has to as well. And then the President has to sign it. Just assuming people have no idea how government works. But I guess if you're voting republican you probably don't
