Let's talk anime.

Anyone else go to Otakon this weekend? Got a nice stash of One Piece stuff along with some other items. The Volumes of One Piece in the pic contain the chapter where Ace died and are signed by Ace's VA, Toshio Furukawa, and the item in the background changes its appearance to show Sabo, Luffy, or Ace depending on the angle you view it from.

I lol'd.

I'm working my way through Ghost Stories on Crunchyroll.

I watched a couple of episodes and found it weird, then I found out why it is so weird

It is often funny but fair warning the dub is from the early 2000's and some of the humor has not aged as well.

Is a Crunchyroll subscription worth it or does the free account carry a lot of anime? I don’t have many specific series I want to watch but would like to watch more than what Netflix and Hulu have available. To be honest, they seem like ads for Crunchyroll because they carry the first couple of seasons of some interesting series.

Free has everything but I think you wait a week or so on the new eps. You just get commercials on free.

I don't know if that is still the case, but back when I was watching stuff on CrunchyRoll regularly, it was worth it for me to get a subscription only so that I would not see the same ad over and over and over again.

Yea I tried the free thing a while back and gave up after seeing the same commercial 7 times in a row.

I hate watching commercials so I always go for the commercial free tier.

I had Hulu with ads at one point ( Cash! Cash Back! ), never again.

Made the mistake of rewatching Made in Abyss season 1 via the recap movies and I had forgot how traumatizing that series is. I don't think I'm in the right headspace to start season 2 which I hear is even more disturbing at parts. Any suggestions for more lighthearted fare?

I'd wonder if Bofuri is too lighthearted for you.

I love Bofuri

Yeah, how lighthearted are we talking here, Forlorn? Want something with a good, serious story that doesn't go to terribly dark places? Looking for a comedy of parody of the genre? Somewhere in between?

Lighter than "Made in the Abyss" is probably 90% of the anime out there.

Fair enough. I meant something more comedic like SpyxFamily which I just finished or Kaguya-sama which I'm currently making my way through the third season. Or a relaxing, chill slice of life type of show. Just have too much crap in my personal life so I can't handle the heavier shows right now.

I will definitely give Bofuri a go!

Ya Boy Kongming! has the most chill vibes of any show I've seen this year and it's not close.

It's hilarious, particularly if you play or have played MMO games.

I’ve been on Crunchroll now for several months. Love the selection of Anime available but, the interface is horrible. It’s Amazon Prime level of bad. How do I remove series from the currently watching group when I am finished? Why can’t I see when the next episode of a series is coming out or suppress the different “seasons” of a show that are the same show but different language dub.

They need a major overhaul to fix that mess.

Also Bofuri season 2 is coming out next year. I can’t wait

If you go to the series page vice an episode page you can remove/add to your list. If you go to your list page it should show the next available ep. If a next wp is not available it will just say "watch again" or "continue" under an ep.

This is all on the PC I'm not sure about other watching methods.

Anybody playing the One Piece trading card game here? I've done 2 tournaments at the local store so far, the pre release one in October and then the official release one last night.

Can’t believe I’m saying this but I think the new Trigun might be mediocre. Like, it’s not bad, but the credits just rolled on the 2nd episode and I realized I had stopped paying attention halfway through. Can’t place my finger on it but I’m just not feeling it. Also, the art style is beautiful but the animation is really weird and distracting. Everything seems floaty and disconnected like nothing has weight.

I'm enjoying the newest Trigun. I think the CGI style maybe why you have that feeling. Also, I have not watched Trigun for ages so don't really remember a lot of it.

That's a shame. The original Trigun was really good, at least my recollection of having watched it about 20 years ago.

Redo of Healer is one of the best shows of a generation.

Season 2 when?

Re: the new trigun, I’m not certain if it’s standalone or remake. They’ve changed a bit, compared to the original series, including removing a main character and replacing them, and changing a major characters name, revealed major plot points in the first episode or two that, in some cases, weren’t revealed until the last 5 or so episodes in the original. The events are also different as some events happen that I assume are to speed up an encounter compared to the previous series. I haven’t read the manga, and the animation style, for me, is hard to watch. Alright, all that being said though, it is quite interesting and until I know if it’s meant to be a retelling Vs a remake, I’m withholding judgement in terms of good vs bad. If I had to say now though? I am leaning towards bad, BUT! It’s possible that newer episodes will change that. I’m waiting for introductions and events that hopefully happen, and maybe we’ll find out if it’s a remake or not. I don’t think it is, based on how much they’ve changed, but idk for certain.

My memory is that the original had a LOT of comedy and filler until you got to some hard hitting episodes towards the last 25% of the series. Like what they did to the preacher.

A bit like how the original Kenshin had the MC potter around like a buffoon...right until his sakabato set you on the path of redemption.

Feels like a stepdown of a season after Chainsaw Man and Bocchi the Rock. Lots of isekai and moe shows. I'm all down for that, but they're not remarkable shows.

Yeah, so far I'm enjoying most of the shows I'm watching. Think there is only one I may drop, depending on the next few episodes, but nothing is really standing out as a must watch new series.

How did you guys find the Isekai Oji-san (uncle from another world) and Eminence in Shadows anime adaptations? I've read their web novel / manga works and thought both took a comedic spin on the Isekai genre.

In the former, the uncle has a time skip from the days of Sega consoles (Mega Drive and Genesis etc). Heck, it references really old works, such as one of which I recognised from Altered Beast from the vaults of my childhood. The latter is ridiculous in premise - secret organisation style muscle head / 8th grade syndrome otaku gets sent to a new world by truck-san after meditating in a forest mistakenly thinking its headlights represented his magical enlightenment.

I'm also excited for the Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in Dungeon) adaptation coming up. The manga is reaching its climax at close to chapter 100 and it's probably one of the best high fantasy manga I've ever read in how there are so many callbacks throughout the series and the mangaka takes the effort to draw her characters with different appearances over time.

The other title I want to watch is the upcoming title from the studio responsible for Your Name. Can't remember what it's called, but I started seeing trailers on YouTube fairly recently.

Eminence in Shadows is an alright anime. I feel like it loses much of the humor that I enjoyed so much in the light novel, but that should be expected since most of the misunderstandings and Shadow-worshiping is internal and doesn't translate to the anime well.

Ojisan was okay. The romcom elements are funnier because you know he doesn't end up with anyone, and his total cluelessness is a believable part of his personality.
