Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

I've had my eye on The Fermi Paradox for a while now, and pulled the trigger on it, finally. It's early access, but tons of fun. Basically you have a dozen or so star systems, each evolving at its own pace, and you run through a text base set of events and choices for each one. You have three choice each time for the big changes, and points that you can spend to ward off bad things (if you have enough points). You can also inflict bad stuff on your civs to gather more points; and you can prune and trim them to avoid future problems, or built their society to let them grow and expand.

There are many random events called "flares" that affect the society, and sometimes give you points to increase your ability to manage devastating events.

The societies have five categories that define them, and they can oscillate around a neutral point on a linear scale. These are Tech, Ethics, Resources, Conflict and Population. Each has a second order rate of change, so they can be directly affected by events (wars will directly reduce population and increase conflict and reduce ethics), but also can affect their rate of change, indicating lingering effects.

Eventually, one or more of the civilizations should reach the capability of starflight, and then they can begin to explore other systems and possibly interact with other species. Of course they could be at wildly different levels of development. This is where the reference to the Fermi Paradox comes into play.

I strongly recommend this one, it's chill and fun and you get to play a sort of limited god. "Oh, your star blipped? Well, your astrologers warned you to develop cave farms but... ...looks like I can't afford reinforce that choice, so you didn't listen. It's okay, you will turn into fossil fuels for the next species that rises up...".

It's on sale at Steam and totally worth it, with active devs and lots more planned.

Sitting on the fence after your description. Reviews on Steam say the endgame is kind of dull.. Is it still in development?

It is *very much* still in development. They have a rudimentary endgame that just got its first content addition in November, with much much more content to come.

It's not something to play if you expect a full, rich game, but it is functional, and improving over time. If you have doubts, wait. What I'm saying is that it's a good base system and kind of a chill game.

Bought it - had an absolute blast playing till speed of light development. Bit rough around the edges, but fun.

The endgame is indeed kind of a click.-fest in No man's land at this moment. Then again, this game doesn't have the cumbersome 'feel like work' 4x mechanic that many have when you are about 70% thought, you know you will win but just have to mop it up (civ, anyone?)

I found The Fermi Paradox pretty compelling. Predictably I tried to make a hugbox galaxy, and was a bit miffed when my peaceful, utopian civ arrived at a different peaceful, utopian civ and I could only choose to have the incoming people wipe out the incumbents.

Not sure if I'd play it again before big changes - I would probably do all the same things again, but keeping population growth down to avoid resource crises.

I'll probably regret it, but it's only $4 and it recently added support for the Steam Deck, so whatever, I'll bite.

That's pretty good since the gold bundle is $15 on Steam right now, and that seems to include all of it.

Looks like I still have mostly unplayed Starpoint Gemini 2 sitting there, though. Hm. Is this better or worse?

I grabbed it. Let's see how it runs on the Deck.

It runs very well on the deck. Type is small but, hopefully, the devs will fix that as they've announced that they are making changes for the deck. The only problem I've had so far is the 'Controls' pane of the options screen is just blank. Which, sucks because the tutorialization of the game isn't great and I don't really remember all of the controls.

I picked it up despite Veloxi's "recommendation."

Should I pick this up? Bought Starpoint Gemini 2 years ago and never had a desire to fire it up

Come on Veloxi (or anyone else), tell us why this is better

Warlords refines the gameplay of 2 and adds light 4x elements to the mix. The DLC also comes with different ways to play like a pirate or an alien. It's the best of this particular series and a fantastic game to boot.

I'm picking the game up more now. I didn't care much for the story so I started a conquest game, then I was overwhelmed by all the options. Finally, I started a new conquest game and turned the slider for resources all the way down so I started with a destroyer. Now I'm picking up lessons one at a time and making some progress in understanding the game. I can almost afford a cruiser.

I like how I can split up my fleets and order them to move or follow me. I am finally starting to construct cruisers and battleships and grow my fleet. I need a bunch of money to buy enhancements for my ships components; I think I have neglected those too much.

Fine, I'm in for $4.

Looks like Cycle of Warfare is the best DLC of the bunch. Lets you play as other factions. Only one with 100% positive reviews. Deadly Dozen has some new ships.

The rest seem hit or miss. But still the main game is $7 on sale directly on Steam so $4 for all of it is good.

*Looks at 2 Macchiatos purchased for $11*

Ugh. FINE.

I think this is one of my most anticipated games of the year

Whoooaaaa nice find!

See, I'm having trouble convincing myself to buy Pavonis' Terra Invicta (even though it gets a lot of high praise from many streamers and within the Goodjer community).

But Falling Frontier? It looks pretty. I'm a sucker for pretty space games. I hope they can get something to market this year!

Yeah, this was a game I put a lot of time into long ago. Mostly the demo, though I did get a full version at some point. I figured it was lost to the ages, so when I came across this video I was surprised.

Chorvs is on sale on Steam again. Lowest price ever on Steam although it was a few bucks cheaper somewhere else last month.

But, there's also a deal where the soundtrack is free until Feb 7. Might as well grab some free music.

I really enjoyed the demo of this one a few months back, but I haven't pulled the trigger since I've had brand new games in the way lately. I figure when I'm actually ready to put it at the top of the pile it will be on sale again hehe.

Everspace 2 teaser trailer. Release date and full trailer coming next Monday.

I picked up Everspace 2 in the winter sale and was pleasantly surprised. I'll admit I wasn't that into Everspace 1... but 2 seems to have just enough campaign stuff to keep you engaged without bogging you down in it.

I actually finished the available main quest content. Interested in seeing what will be added in 1.0.
