Found this, via https://slate.com/human-interest/2014/01/bill-of-mortality-document-shows-death-toll-during-the-great-plague-of-london.html:

In addition to the immense toll of the plague, this document shows the high rate of infant mortality. The youngest Londoners died so often, historian Lynda Payne writes, that their deaths were categorized according to their ages, rather than according to the diseases that might have killed them. “Chrisomes” (15 dead) were infants younger than a month old; “teeth” (113 dead) were babies not yet through with teething.

Sounds like someone's not creative enough: Parallel to USB adapter

Perhaps it's a joke about lazy IT guys. Finding and plugging in an adapter is a lot of work.

We thought about that when we looked at the picture. Of course finding toner will be difficult too.

Apparently not? Like, is the printer THAT robust that there's still a market for toner for this thing? :O

How many of those must they have made to still have them to sell?

If you've never worked desk side support, you might find yourself amazed at how people will glom onto a printer. They don't want a new one, they don't want to print to the big copier up front, only their precious will do.

Even better, it's an HP LaserJet, so JetDirect print server

Not amazed, and I can totally understand it. Printers are finicky beasts that require constant maintenance. I'd much rather have one that I know works the way I want, rather than chase all over the building trying to find one that a) works, b) has toner, and c) isn't configured stupidly.

I had one of those a couple of weeks back.
One drive is giving what amounts to an out of space error.
I ask, "How much space do you have?"
149 MB on a 256GB laptop hard drive! How it even booted is beyond me. It probably is one of those cases where they never shut down their laptop for months

And, as an aside, spoiled for language

I f*cking hate Alaska, I miss Lower NY with every fiber of my being.

I’m pretty sure I fought that in some Fromsoft game

Zona, I know you miss Hicksville, but those Alaska pictures are stunning.

Ah, thanks. One day when I can be arsed to bother, I'll do a full photo dump and throw them up here. The view doesn't do much for me, I genuinely didn't get much out of natural vistas before I started living in a Bob Ross painting, but I can recognize a good photograph when it's staring me in the face.

That should be Alaska's new state motto:
Living in a Bob Ross Painting

Cuz its true...

Out of curiosity as I've never been to Alaska, what do you hate about it?

I've never heard of Cosmic ray fission. Time to look it up.

The cold and darkness during the winter, the fact that it never gets warm to me even in the summer, and just how rural and spread out it is. How expensive everything up here is, housing aside.

How food is close to its use by date by the time you get it, hard to find eggs that have more than a week and a half left in them. Vegetables have a lifespan measured in days and that's if you pick the ones that aren't already starting to turn on the supermarket shelf.

The lack of services and options. That I had to specifically look for a place to rent that got internet at all, then had to look for one that got the one unlimited data package with any sort of speed. Oil changes and car repairs require you to book an appointment far in advance.

How few dining options I have. How I can't get basically any cuisine you care to name a short hop from my house, let alone by taking a quick train to NYC.

The fact that I am totally reliant on a car/truck for transportation.

I love cities, I do not care for nature. I would have lived in NYC in a heartbeat if I didn't previously work on Long Island. NYC is probably one of my favorite places on earth. This is the inverse of that.

Stuff

We used to vacation up in Fairbanks every year, so I understand a lot of this. I tend to run a little bit warmer than most folks, so the cold never bothers me, but the lack of services and internet (we were stuck using super slow cellular connections at my grandmother's house) was a little off-putting. Still, I really miss going back.

I used to work for a company that provided some back-end services to ISPs in Alaska (including Adak Island!)... and holy CRAP the latency was awful to the remote sites. Do not recommend. I would hope it's better today, because I'm not sure it could be much worse!
