The big "How do I choose an HDTV?" thread.

My 11-12 year old 55" LG LED TV died on Saturday and was able to replace it with a LG 65" C1 OLED for $1360. Nice upgrade and have always been pleased with LG TV picture quality.

Nice!!!

I love my LG C1 OLED, but boy howdy does the auto-dimming get on my nerves. I've disabled every other flag I can find, and it still decided to go extra dark during a late but important scene in Prey. So I ordered a service remote to be able to disable the TPC and GSR features when I plan to enjoy movies.

Since I am in the market for a C1, what does it do? The auto-dimming just bounces around depending on what is on-screen? That sounds pretty annoying.

It auto-dims aggressively during Critical Role and it's a bit maddening, but it looks so good the rest of the time I just sigh heavily and deal with it.

Weird. Mine auto dims when I pause it but I haven't noticed it during while there is movement on the screen. Maybe it uses some strange algorithm.

With Critical Role, there's an overlay to divide up the screen; Matt Mercer (the DM is on the left pane, and then there are upper and lower panes for cameras for the other players. I'm guessing there's enough there it confuses the screen into thinking the static parts of the image need auto-dim to prevent burn-in of some sort.

It's never dimmed watching anything else, so it's just a result of how they arrange the screen for CR.

Ah, ok. That makes sense.

Our Samsung can be annoying when a scene is jumping back and forth between like a darker close up and a brighter wide shot. Was watching something with a lot of courtroom scenes that jumped between close up on witness and wide shot of the lawyers and it just couldn't keep up but I couldn't find an option anywhere to disable it.

Also for the Bombcast, and many other things where the 30%+ of the screen is unchanging for a couple minutes.

I haven't noticed an issue with aggressive dimming (or any dimming) with my C1 OLED while watching movies and TV as of yet. I have watch thru my Roku and thru the LG apps on the TV.

The picture Quality has been top notch as all my handful of LG tvs have been.

It was nice to find how easy it was to stream/cast from my PC to my TV over WiFi by just clicking on connect in Win10. Sound switch from PC to TV/receiver in a flash. Will make watching certain movies easy without any 3rd party apps/hardware. TV is a few rooms away and the connection was solid.

My old TV was not this smart.

I haven’t noticed that on my C1 either but I don’t watch streams like you are mentioning with big chunks of unchanging content on the image.

Good lord a 97” OLED HDTV would be glorious. I can’t imagine the price but that’s almost projector screen size with superior picture quality.

Article said most likely cost the same as last year's 88" - $25K

So I guess my 2015 Samsung UHD does have HDR? I know they announced in 2016 there would be an update for HDR for the 2015 models (or was it just technically HDMI 2.0a?) but my PS4 never would never detect it when I tried HDR games (and later the PS5 told me my TV didn't support HDR). I tried bypassing the Onkyo receiver but that didn't work either.

I got a 4k Comcast box recently and apps or anything 4k was super washed out. I found the "UHD HDMI Color" setting on the TV that I hadn't noticed before and I'm assuming was added through a TV update at some point (as I did get occasional update notifications). Enabling that not only fixed the Comcast wash out problem but also now the PS5 let me select HDR. Next step I guess is to compare some games with it on and off and see if I can notice.

You can get the 42” LG C2 OLED for $797 from most major retailers. Can’t stress how great this is for gaming.

Sister got a Samsung Frame TV. I don't have a console with me but it sure looks nice for 4k streaming. And the art display while we're not watching of course.

Finally went for this one, can’t wait to try it out. I love my projector, but high frame rate is my jam.

How is this as a PC monitor?

Fantastic IMO. I use it daily as my PC monitor.

I can't believe how much lighter the C2s are than the C1s. I have the 65 C1 and I just helped my friend hook up the C2. It felt so much lighter so I looked it up. My box weight was 90 compared to 60 lbs for the new one. TV without the stand was 53 versus 36 respectively. It didn't feel anymore flimsy so I don't know what kind of magic they did.

That was my biggest problem setting up my 65” C1 - it is so thin but so heavy it is like impossible to pick up without putting the weight somewhere on the screen. Having to lay it flat to install the stand and then stand it back up I was very afraid we were going to crack it at the corners or edges because there is nowhere else to grip it.

Any chance you happen to have it on an arm mount? One of my Ultrasharps is starting to flicker, and the cost of a new Ultrasharp versus the 42" C2 isn't drastically differently.

No…I just have it on the stand.

Tell me about it. I was so scared putting that thing up on the wall! 2 people required and no good place to put your second hands.

LG says their 2023 OLEDs feature an uplift in brightness up to 70% over previous models.

Now the long wait for prices to get cheap enough at the 80"+ sizes.

meh. I'll believe it when reviews come out.

Meanwhile Samsung is pretending they will launch micro LED displays this year. $10k for a 55 inch screen, anyone?

What year is it again? 2023, not 2003, right?

And according to the first line in this article, that is how much a plasma cost back then...

Every Christmas season I'm reminded how dated "Elf" is when Peter Dinklage's character brags about his wealth by describing how many 70 inch TVs he owns, 3rd place behind the number of homes he has and how much "action" he gets.
