Guild Wars 2 Catch All

Been playing around as a Virtuoso and really enjoying it. Although lack of clones means I spend more time getting hit than I'm used to because Mobs don't get distracted.

Dagger is still a ranged instrument humorously so I can stay most of the way out of trouble

Can I use my current Guild Wars 2 account to log into the game through Steam?

No, if you have a Guild Wars 2 account which was created through the Guild Wars 2 website, you cannot log into it through Steam and vice versa. You will need to continue playing on your account using the client from the Guild Wars 2 website. To be able to login from Steam, you must create an account via Steam and use the Steam client to log into the game.

Well ok. Also no linking, no merging or transfer. So start over if you want Steam. Yuck.

I would much rather have the game on Steam for auto updates. But dang, not throwing away my account for that convenience.

You can sort of link your account in by:

Right-click
Properties
Launch Options
Type in:
-provider Portal

That forces the Steam install to use the ArenaNet launcher. Then you just log in as normal. You lose the ability to buy upgrades through Steam though.

You can also bypass the download with a little command line trickery (have not tested this).

Nope this just makes it so you can launch the game from Steam. It won't allow auto updates or friends list connections.

Does GWJ still have an active guild in GW2?

Active-ish? I can add you to the guild, but I have no idea what it's like in US evening hours, being over on the other side of the ocean. Your best bet might be a sister guild of ours, Zealots of Shiverpeaks. A lot of us joined both GWJ and ZoS (you can join more than one guild now), and they are an amazing bunch, very laid back, but quite active, organizing strikes, raids, or whatever it is (I can never join, because, again, six hours ahead of Eastern). It's well worth looking into, and I can put in a good word for goodjers. I'm still Grandmistress of the GWJ guild too, so if you're not in yet, I can still add you (it's a good way to look for goodjers).

Yeah the GWJ guild is a good way to see who has logged on recently. But it feels like most people actively playing are representing other guilds first.

I'm new to GW2 and feel incredibly silly, but how do I request an invite? I tried to find somewhere to search for both a GWJ and Zealots guild but can't find a guild search anywhere. I looked under the guild tab and in the LFG tab? A /who command doesn't seem to work and I'm not finding any options when searching around. Sorry for the noob moment here but how do I request/get an invite?

I believe that an officer in the guild has to invite you.

Invite has been extended. Welcome to the guild! Let me know if there's anything else I can do, hope to see you in there!

I 100% know I've asked this before, but any advice for returning players befuddled by What to Do? My bags are full, I get lots of gifts from ArenaNet, but I end up wandering around for a half hour and then logging out. I really feel like I'm missing a LOT but I do find the who/what/where so inscrutable. With WoW I knew I *could* do all the activities, they just bored me to tears. With GW2, I guess I need some handholding re quests, dungeons, crafting, PvP, etc. Thanks!

Yeah I've done that same thing all year. Login to get Amazon prime rewards. Look at my crazy inventory. Logout.

Natus, go to Divinity’s Reach. You should have an invitation in your in-game mail that you can double-click to go the Festival grounds. From there are portals to all sorts of activities and competitions. Enjoy!

Also I would say if you have not finished the main/living story go and do that. There should be a section in where can see where you are and where to go next in the UI.

So first thing to do is open your hero panel, and check the status of your main quest. it's a star like symbol on the far left of the panel, about mid way down. Next thing to do re: open world is to find out your level, then open up the world map. start looking in zones and find level appropriate maps. For example, Gendarren Fields should have (before you press on it), a level descriptor of 25-35? 25-30? I forget exactly. But it's designed for characters of that level. When you find a level appropriate map go there, and look for a scout, they'll tell you about level appropriate challenges and tell you where on your map they are. Generally it's kill X creatures, find X items and turn in at Y NPC(s). There are generally quite a few, and each section of the map with a few exceptions has maps for each level section. I can find a guide for you if you want. Every 10 levels up to like level 60 or 70 has a main quest, then another, around 70 it goes every 5-1 levels or so. There are also world bosses for each zone, typically near the median or max of that zone. You generally can do those once a day (day resetting at 8 pm EST US). There is also a festival going on, essentially GW2 christmas. Go to Divinty's reach either manually, using the shaemoore map thingy, or an invitation you should have in your mail or inventory, depending on how recently you logged in. Lemme know if you need more help.

Oh, I forgot to mention that if you're above the level limit for the region you're in, but haven't done the content (or even if you have done the content), you're brought down to an appropriate level for that region, but still gain true level-appropriate xp. So if you wanna get to level 80 by running around and exploring the map, that is totally viable.

That being said, not to discourage anybody from doing this, but the level scaling isn't perfect, especially in the starter areas that are tuned to not having all your abilities availble (not sure there's a single game out there that downscales characters perfectly), so you'll end up one shotting a lot of stuff.

Specifically it depends more on gear that you have equipped. Blues will give less stats than greens, than yellows, than oranges, than pinks, and I think Purples still have that odd scaling where they do more than ascended, despite being identical. Unless they patched that bug out. But yes it's not a perfect scaling, and having gear with stats that lower levels don’t come by easily like ferocity in the starting zones will make you hit harder.

Arise thread! The latest expansion - Secrets of the Obscure - is coming August 22. Looks pretty cool - it’s flight themed with a brand new story and Wizards Tower zone. Anet is also introducing a new combat system that lets you use various weapons without being locked into a specific elite specialization. Feels very much like GW 1.

Prime Gaming is giving away an in-game puppy for another couple weeks.

The new expansion released today, Janthir Wilds.

Speaking of, do the expansions decrease in price at all, or are they price stable, as it were? I mostly noodle around with this game, but I'm curious.

They do seem to have seasonal sales fairly frequently, so sign up to the newsletter and keep an eye on their site and social media.

The new expansion, as well as the last expac, was released at $24.99. The expansion is released in four phases over a year. Every quarter a new portion of the expansion is released. The last expansion, Secrets of the Obscure, is a year old and hasn't gone on sale. I think the $25 price point makes sense and I don't see them putting them on sale for sometime.

Coincidentally picked this back up over the weekend unaware that a new expansion was around the corner- judging from the anniversary tickets in my inbox it’s been several years.
Decided to finish the Skyscale achievements before progressing to Janthir so it should only be a couple more years before I get to it.

Do you have the previous expansion, Secrets of the Obscure? The expansion itself is underwhelming but it makes getting the skyscale much easier than the old way.

Yeah I just bought up to the current expansion and saw there’s a shortcut for the skyscale but apparently you can’t access the masteries if you unlock it that way and I’m already a fair way into the normal route.
I’m just midway through the part where you have to farm 250 of each currency from each map and it’s extremely slow going

Not true.

I looked up some guides this weekend when I resumed playing and unless something has changed after the Obscure expansion released, they all said that the Season 4 Skyscale masteries are unavailable for the Obscure Skyscales if you don’t complete the Season 4 achievements and that unlocking them enhances some of the Obscure masteries.

Season 4 and SOTO each have their own set of Skyscale masteries. The S4 set gives only 3 abilities; the SOTO set gives 7 abilities, 2 of which are the same as 2 of the S4 masteries. If you have both sets of masteries, the 2 shared abilities are slightly enhanced. The one S4 ability missing from SOTO, Rift Repair, isn't very useful in the current game (it only works on S4 rifts, not the rifts that play a much larger part in SOTO and Janthir).

Full details here.

Btw, if you look up the Return To achievements for each section, for example, Return To The Sandswept Isle. The Tier3 reward for each is 250 of that areas currency.
