NCAA Football 2022/2023 Season Catch All!

Special teams baby

LOL it's 17-17...

While generally ambivalent, but leaning towards anxiety at who stanfurd will end up hiring.. it suddenly flipped to panic mode when on my feed someone suggested my aforementioned undefeated, #2 FCS seed, Sacramento State head coach and proud Cal alum, Troy Taylor may be a prime candidate...

That can't happen can it? Troy Taylor coaching against Cal in the Big Game?

Carlbear95 wrote:

I guess this is good news? As long as Troy Taylor stays at Sac State and doesn't go to stanfurd, it will at least be an improvement over last year.

and there we go...

Hell I guess if Pitino can coach Kentucky and Louisville, anything is possible.

edit: posted in the basketball thread

Sad to see Mike Leach died. He was one of the more interesting characters in college football. Got to be tough for that team and fanbase.

Never a fan, but that must be rough for the community.

For Fed:

And the saga of UCLA leaving for the B1G is complete...

UC Regents approve the move, but will require UCLA to pay Cal a tax... how much is still TBD. Some estimates as high as $10M.. but not clear if its one-time, per year, or what.

Also require UCLA to set up a $2.5M fund for student athlete welfare, additional tutoring, etc. due to increased stress of travel for athletics.

EDIT: Looks like payment to Cal (amount TBD) will be annual.. so a free cash perpetuity infusion. Go Bruins!

That's so California. It made me laugh.

I guess until they let schools pay athletes instead of relying on NIL, you have to figure out some way to keep it within the NCAA rules. I've got no problem with that.

In comparison, think about what some of these low level schools go through early in the seasons in football and basketball, where their early non-conference games are all as sacrificial lambs for the big schools, all in service of large paydays. Those games have the schools often traveling long distances, but end up as a large portion of the funding for athletic budgets of those schools. Tennessee played some school this year in basketball that had not even gone home for weeks because they were scheduled that way. But if they didn't prostitute themselves out as tune up games for the big schools, they probably couldn't fund their teams.

Time zone issues would seem to actually be worse for eastern schools flying west, but these mega-conferences will definitely change some stuff from a logistics perspective.

Yes and no. For the revenue sports, the big school pays the little school, so revenue wise it’s a wash. Football probably has a big team of academic and tutoring support that may even travel with the team, and they have charter flights, etc.

This is less about football, more about (NCAA champion) women’s soccer that now has to play 4 or 5 road games at least 2 time zones and a 4 hour flight away on a Friday afternoon.

I would disagree on time zones. An away game at Maryland at 11am is not ideal for west coast athlete who just got off the plane less than 24 hours ago.. You can argue a 7pm game isn’t great either going the other way, but I’m guessing from the student athlete perspective, that is preferred. Traveling East also burns a day, or is a red eye (women’s field hockey isn’t going charter so at the whim of commercial airlines). You can at least get 2-3 hours back coming this way. Not to mention most conference away games for the other teams, are at most 1 time zone away. For UCLA, all (save usc) conference away games are at least 2 time zones away.

All that being said, Cal is ready to accept our B1G invite whenever we get it

If you developed good baseball and bowling programs, we could give you Vandy's slot in the SEC.

Don't call us, we'll call you.

11AM bowl games are dumb. But I'm watching anyway. Cards up early. It's been cold, cloudy, rainy, now sunny... Boston make up your mind.

24-7, Keg of Nails stays in Louisville. Woohoo

Ooof Florida. Expected them to lose with all those players leaving but this is bad.

Fixed it for ya.

Gotta just give him the honorary doctorate, no?

Since I posted this in the wrong thread:

FRESNO STATE dominated their Power 5 bowl opponent as usual, smashing Washington State 29-6 in a game that wasn't even as close as that score.

Oregon is having themselves a day today. I started the day a little bummed that the class this year seemed down compared to the last handful of years but they have come out strong today. Uncle Phil must have opened up the wallet.

Cards looking good so far. The California kids are all signing, following QB Pierce Clarkson. Some really good 4-star transfers that have been announced the last 2 weeks since we got our new coach. Lots of exciting things happening this morning.

Edit. I'm excited about the 7 kids enrolling in January. Spring practice and conditioning can help them get on the field.

Dabo. LOL.

It's like someone asked him "Coach Swinney can you please do a Dabo impression as if you're cfb twitter, really play it all the way up as ridiculous as possible"

Didn't realize you got Calloway. He's a heck of an athlete that I think came in as a QB (nobody thought he'd stick there and he didn't). Just couldn't find a spot on the field over some talented receivers. He did contribute on special teams.

This little incident didn't help:

Hope he does well for you guys and finds his spot.

Looks like a firey competitor.

Better than off the field issues.

QB Jack Plummer reportedly transferring from Cal to Louisville?

Not official yet but a couple different sources cited. Hm.

He’s a perfectly serviceable QB if you give home some protection. We never did so not sure if he can take the next step. He had some really bad accuracy particularly on the long ball.improved as the season went on, but honestly we needed a change.

Unfortunately for us with a new OC both Plummer AND his backup are transferring so honestly for us Tier 3 or worse schools, I think picking up the scraps from other schools is the way we will be going. Bo Nix or Caleb Williams like objects aren’t going to be joining our schools, so we will have to take chances and hope for the best.

Welcome to the new age of college football!. I really am not sure long term how teams outside of the top 40 or so teams are supposed to become relevant. Maybe that’s what the country really wants? I guess I’m still surprised that anyone who doesn’t go to even these big name schools actually wants to watch them? I mean I’d rather watch Cal play UC Davis 100 times before watching UGA vs Michigan 1 time,

Poor little ditch lizards.

But I'd still wager Miami won't make their 2nd ACC championship game appearance ever. They get preseason ranked every season and still have only made it once in the last 18 years.

Press keeps wanting Miami back and they keep refusing to be back

4 games today and no comments? Feels like the bowl schedule finally ramping up through playoffs
