Horror movies and TV series

I've had an itch for some horror recently. I'm not sure on what is junk and what's good on the Netflix that I've not seen at the moment... so I'm going to browse back through this thread on the hunt for something to sate my appetite for scares

Good plan

How was that Korean space series? Good and also spooky? I forget the name.

I watched Significant Other on Paramount. It was very good. Not a classic but it goes in directions I really didn’t expect. There’s one particular “what the f’ ” moment I didn’t see coming.

The main actress is the one from It Follows. She’s brilliant.

I thought I'd try this and yep I agree with you both. The first is ok, the second good but maybe not great. I like the format, old school, but I think there wasn't enough time to tell the tale effectively in episode one. Episode two, the pace was right and story fitted the length better, short and sharp.

I guess I'm the odd guy that liked the first episode better than the second one. Looking forward to the third one!

Just watched Terrifier and Terrifier 2. Loved both of them but it comes with a HUGE warning that they are gory and definitely not movies for the faint of heart. However, Art the Clown, who is the main villain, was done really well. His character is creepy and mesmerizing all at the same time.

There are articles saying that people passed out in the theater, vomited, and others who had to leave. My guess is they didn't do their homework to find out what the movie was like before going.

Watched a couple more Curiosities episodes last night. I think they're getting better. Episode 3 in particular was pretty cool and bordered on a great TV horror short. Episode 4 I really enjoyed, it might not be everyone's cup of tea but I liked it's style, kept you guessing at where the story was going and kind of reminded me of watching Black Mirror. I think I can happily watch the rest of the series.

By the way reading comments above are some of you getting the series piecemeal and not all at once? It looks like I can watch the lot as and when I want.

Yes, the third one was extremely good. I’ve decided I do quite like not knowing what’s actually going on in a story. So many horror movies, etc that are the ‘haunted house’ or the ‘lurking monster’ or the ‘unstoppable psychopath’ where you really know the arc of the story in broad terms. It’s nice to feel like you are in unknown territory.

They've been releasing them two episodes a day for the last few days, I think.

As for the third episode, my wife and I could only get through the first half before having to stop it for the night because we were falling asleep. I'm really liking it, though --it's giving me strong X-Files vibes, which is always a good thing.

Ahhh gotcha, I did wonder.

Don't sleep on watching Barbarian. It just hit HBO Max on Friday, and oh my is it good.

I've heard it's very good and it's best to go in knowing nothing about it.

I enjoyed Silent Sea back when I watched it.

Yes and yes.

I've watched all of what Cabinet of Curiosities has to offer. Seems to me the creators had a lot of fun making these little TV tales, some were better than others but on the whole I had fun watching them.

This 100%. All I heard was "Watch it, it's great!". I had no idea where the movie was going while I was watching it but did end up really liking it.

Watched Tumbbad (Prime). It's an Indian horror movie and a pretty decent one. It's split in to 3 chapters. First one taking place in 1918 and the last one in 1947. It basically has everything to do with greed. There's a tale of a forgotten god that was obsessed with gold. All the gods banded together to stop him from stealing all the gold. Then tried to wipe out his existence from history. However a few people still know of his existence and the treasure he left behind.

The main character wants that treasure no matter how dangerous it is - and it is dangerous.

The movie looks great. They especially did some really nice effects on one of the "creatures" which I imagine they took inspiration from the Evil Dead movies. The main character is pretty reprehensible but the story is a good one and I was interested from start to finish.

A big thumbs up for checking it out.

Think I got overhyped on Barbarian cuz while it’s a good movie, I went in expecting all these unpredictable twists and turns only to find out there’s really only one twist and about halfway through it basically becomes a pretty standard on-rails horror flic.
I still recommend it but I suggest people temper their expectations a bit, it plays around with the genre but it’s not some revelatory experience.

Barbarian.

Holy sh*t.

That's all.

This is pretty much how I feel about it too. I wouldn't say I was disappointed, but yeah, it runs out of anything interesting or original at the halfway point.

I watched The Wolf of Snowy Hollow yesterday. I’d heard good things about it some time ago but just got round to it now. It’s a very good story (I’m glad I stuck with it. I nearly gave up) and my favourite werewolf creature effects (so often they just don’t work for me as much as I want them to) but the main character let the film down. He was very shouty in and very over the top in general. I wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be comedic or intended to show the pressure he was under. I suspect the latter but it really didn’t work either way. The rest of the cast were very good.

The end credits made me realise that the main actor was also the writer, director. It feels like a bit of a tragedy that he didn’t cast someone else in the main role because I could see it being a far better film if he had.

Yeah, Holy Moly. I understand why it can be divisive, but I thought Barbarian was amazing. If I was back in high school, I would write an essay in film class about why horror and comedy seem so linked and why comedy writers are successful pivoting to horror. Great casting choices too.

Finished Interview with the Vampire season one. This show was fantastic. This was better than the books and the movies by far. I liked all the movies but only really liked the first book. Might be my favorite vampire show or tied with my favorite.

The acting was great. Very good choice to give Lestat a accent. Here he is very French. Loved little miss murder machine Didn't mind that they aged her up a bit. We still get the drama of her being so young and stuck in a body that will never grow up. Loved what they did with Greyworm. The fact he was black really mattered to the story. Also being gay mattered to the story it wasn't just a check mark.

Good news season two is a go.

Wrong Turn (2021) turned out to be a decent horror film. I seem to recall thinking the original ones was ok and this one seems a bit better than ok. Same setup. Teens go out hiking in the wilderness. Go off trail. Encounter strangers that want to do them harm - lots of bloody harm and deaths ensue. The strangers in this one was a bit more interesting than the mutants from the original film.

But there's a second storyline that kicks in where the father of one of the teens goes looking for her. And that was somewhat interesting too.

I do have to say the characters in this film know how to double-tap so a person they are trying to kill remains dead. I always hate in current films when characters knock out a threat then turn their backs thinking it's over. Can't do that anymore.

And while I was almost disappointed in the ending the real ending played out during the credits roll. And that was a satisfying ending. So kudos to the director for making a right turn there.

Halloween Ends was bad. The thing was the first 40 minutes of that film were really good. There was a good story going on about Laurie Strode who after all this tragedy has picked up the pieces. She and her granddaughter have a nice little family going and actually seem happy. Laurie also looks open to allowing a love interest into her life. But she is still tough as nails as she helps out a local kid who's bullied after having an awful event happen to him when he babysat some years ago.

If they continued on the storyline with Laurie following her love interest and helping this troubled kid out, I would likely have been much more favorable. But here comes Michael Myers. And that just dumbed up the whole movie. Like the previous movie the end was terrible.

Halloween 3 still remains my favorite out of all the series.

I came in remembering that I liked the movie but not too many details from it. First two episodes have been incredible so far. I'm loving the performances as well.

Just a heads up: Barbarian is up on Disney+ (not the first place I would have looked for it.)

without going into too many spoilers, is that worth a watch for someone who, say, generally has no interest in "horrible people-based / non-supernatural" horror and gets really annoyed at plot twists where the supernatural events are not actually supernatural after all? I can't seem to get a good gauge on what the hell that film is actually about without risking too many details revealed.

I can't say just now. Probably watching it tonight.

Edit: I wouldn’t want to know if there were supernatural elements or not so I’ll spoiler it.

Spoiler:

There are fantastical elements but nothing supernatural. It definitely has truly awful people.

Eh, then I shall probably give it a skip, thanks for the feedback!

Spoiler:

I don't really like people-focused horror, So without any supernatural stuff / monsters / aliens then it's not for me!
