Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

I have a random idea. How to strap a power bank to the back of the switch?

They make cases with built in power banks and special power banks made to clip on the switch. You could use magnets or velcro but then you wouldn't be able to use your dock.

Hey everyone, I can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere else.

My son has a Lite and he really wants us to play together on stuff like Mario Kart, maybe some Mario games, etc. I know we can't dock the system to a TV and the internet tells me I can't do "tabletop mode" whatever that is, with a Lite.

Q: What are our options for multiplayer?

Buy another Lite?
Buy an OLED Switch and do the normal console thing?
Buy a wireless controller and play on the single Lite screen but split screen?
Something else I don't know?

Appreciate any guidance.

If you want to play on the single Lite screen you'll probably want two separate controllers and a stand for the Lite (I'm assuming it doesn't have one built in since there are no detachable controls). At that point the marginal cost of getting a second system of some kind makes that option more appealing.

This is the right answer. After you start adding up the cost of controllers and the like I would just try to get a cheap Switch on Facebook Marketplace or eBay and just have a home console version of the system.

I will say that I use mine for family games when I visit with family. I just recently made my regular Switch my “primary” console in anticipation of taking it to my family’s house for the holidays and playing Mario Kart, Towerfall, Mario Party, Jackbox, Drawful and other popular games with my family.

Last time we were together the parents and grandparents had a great time with Jackbox in particular. I think having a Switch that connects to a TV can be great family fun.

Got the kiddo a switch... I got myself one too... been wanting some portable gaming... So we got the mario cart bundles and I'm getting him the latest kirby (forgotten land) as well as Super Mario 3d World.

Kiddo is 6 and this is his first not tablet gaming. I know there are many great games, what I don't know is what games are great with 2 switches for us to play together at his age with no experience.

I was thinking the Lego Star wars game, but wanted to know if it's still hard to understand what they want you to do sometimes like in older games. I don't want him to get discouraged.

Also, what accessories should I add to the Christmas list?

Daughter (8) and I have been enjoying Good Job.

Can also recommend Ring Fit Adventure. He'll just be aging into it. Switch Sports is probably a good pick too.

The new Lego Star Wars is pretty incredible. It will be a fantastic experience to couch coop like that. If he's not played any real games yet, then it playing alone or Mario Odyssey playing alone is likely kick his butt and cause lots of frustration and anger. That'll pass after several weeks and months as he learns that real games aren't like the baby games that are on mobile devices.

Connecting two Switches? Probably Mario Kart would be best? Will probably need a Family Plan account for Switch Online to do that though.

Accessories: just a Genki Covert Dock so it's very easy to hook it up to a TV when traveling, and either a/some official Pro controllers or 8BitDo's latest Pro controllers, whatever they're at now.

Why didn't anyone tell me Front Mission finally dropped on the Switch, and that's it's on sale?

Anyone got a good suggestion for a case that holds a decent sized tablet as well?

I would think you would need a pouch or you would need one of those small suitcase like cases people use for their guns or to make portable raspberry pi game systems.

Just heard rpg maker is being shut down. Making the game completely useless on the switch. Hmmm well I guess you could still make a game just for your self but you will be limited to assets that are on the game itself.

I have been heard again and again in reviews and posts that the Switch is showing its age. The implication seeming to be that it is reaching the end of it's life.

Example here Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - REUNION Switch Technical Performance Review!

Maybe I just have to big of a backlog or maybe I am just not picky enough but I feel like they can still be making great games for the Switch and it really doesn't need a new version.

How do you feel about it?

Gets a complete "eh" from me, but that's cos there's a honking silverback of a PC upstairs from my Switch.

That largely makes my Switch a Nintendo machine and Nintendo games run perfectly well on it because Nintendo aren't trying to shoehorn a PS5's worth of game into the humble Switch.

Expecting PS5 performance from the Switch isn't a technical problem with the Switch, it's an expectation problem.

Yeah, the Switch has mostly been my indie machine since so many indie's are great handheld games as well.
My PS5 and PC are for the pretties.

Same setup here. Even bought a few things like Dead Cells a 2nd time on Switch because I knew I would play it more there, and did.

This was the Switch for me too until the Steam Deck came and took that job.

Now it's Nintendo titles only. Mostly just waiting around for Zelda.

This is me in a nutshell. Once I knew I was getting a Steam Deck, I stopped paying attention to most non-exclusive games outside of the Steam platform. It helps that I have a nice PC to go with it.

My wife's sh*tty cousins from Michigan visited for the Ohio-State-Michigan game. After which, my 8bitdou controller no longer works without being plugged in, my left joy-con is drifting badly, and one of my two pro controllers is MIA.

I am not saying it is their fault, only that before their visit I had 4 functional controllers (two pros, the 8-bit duo, and a set of joy-cons) to 1.5 ish.

Does anyone know a cheap place I can get some new pro controllers or something that functions nearly identically for a fraction of the price? The switch is too old for me to want to drop $200+ to get everything back to functional, but everyone always wants to play 4-player Mario Kart.

Spoiler:

As an aside, my son likes to play Marion Kart with me and two of his stuffies, which there are enough assists to make them competitive against AI

Buy used at your friendly local indie game store?

Those, unfortunately, do not exist here.

Cheap? Chinese Binbok/Clones are a little cheaper joycons not by much. They are okay/cheap feeling.

Pro Controller: 8Bitdo Pro 2 50ish dollars.

Alternative idea. MAYFLASH Magic-S PRO 2 Wireless Bluetooth USB Adapter 25 bucks and use your other controllers you own. You may need two or more.

Fix a Joycon isn’t too bad but it’s small enough to be annoying and the replacement sticks don’t always work.

Will a random xbox controller work? I'll be needing extras Christmas morning...

Yes.

Geez. Are we talking Kevin's cousins from Home Alone or are we talking Cousin Eddie from Christmas Vacation?

I get that kids are going to be hard on electronics, but adults?

Nintendo year end stats. Not very detailed

Kevin’s cousins. The oldest is 13 (and I think the reason one is gone) and then 9 and 6.

The duo and the joycons I don’t mind—stuff breaks (especially cheap electronics and especially joycons). But the missing pro controller pisses me off. (It was one of the launch ones with the secret thank you).

Tune in at 2 p.m. PST tomorrow, Feb. 8, for a #NintendoDirect livestream featuring roughly 40 minutes of information mostly focused on #NintendoSwitch games launching in the first half of 2023.

I hope there is some gameplay of Tears of the Kingdom. It is close enough to launch that we need to be done with cinematic trailers only.

Zelda is also big enough for its own direct if they want to. Definitely will watch.

Advance Wars?

Zelda of course is the headliner. Advance Wars probably makes sense since that's been on the shelf for a long time now. Probably also Xenoblade 3 DLC and maybe the newest set of tracks for the MK8 DLC. Maybe something for Splatoon 3 as well. I wouldn't necessarily expect the Pokemon SV DLC to be announced yet.

Trying to think what the surprise is going to be. Maybe it's time for the Metroid Prime trilogy re-release?
