Elden Ring Catch-all

I fear that this will be one of those GREAT games that I might never play... what a shame.

I will say that elden ring is probably the best for first time souls players. As unlike the prior games you can actually control the difficulty quite a bit.

You can basically make the game as challenging as you like. Via leveling, spirits, summons or magic.

Free PvP colosseum DLC coming this week

I wonder if there will be any incentive to explore/participate in the colluseums, or if it's just an arena. I'm not sure the game is balanced enough for their to be rewards.

Burying the lede!

In this new update, a brand-new multiplayer feature in the form of the Colosseum arenas have been added, as well as new hairstyles for you to enjoy. Additionally, new balance adjustments have been made to improve the stability of gameplay.

Looks like this v1.08 patch is now live on Steam.

Congratulations to Fromsoft for getting GOTY at the Game Awards.

Well then, it's a great time for me to give this an honest attempt. I originally bought it on Xbox, but that became my wife's primary system so I never did get very far, just a bit past Godrick(?) I think. In the interim I upgraded my PC so I've just installed it there and began my new journey.

I was having fun with a sorcerer playthrough before I stopped, but I'm going for a greatsword or heavy weapon type this round and try to play through the entire game. Still going to attempt a mostly spoiler free run and only look things up if I find myself stuck.

Enjoy. While I agree there are some games where "spoiler free" is important (GoW a good example), unless you really are some insane check under every rock, and read and exhaust every dialog and try to decipher it, do yourself a favor and allow yourself to check online often.

It was definitely my GOTY this year, but there is zero way it would have gotten to that if I didn't basically have the elden ring wiki open on an ipad next to me the whole time. Even the simplest of things, like what a summon is and how to upgrade it, is missed if you step away or accidentally (purposefully?) skip dialog. I needed a friend to explain the whole thing to me.

Understood and thanks for the tip. I should probably revise my statement to: I'm ok with looking up mechanics, what items or things are/do, and even an occasional video on how to beat a particularly difficult boss once if needed. I guess what I meant was that my favorite thing in any game is exploration and discovery, so I fully intend to poke around as much as possible on my own. And won't shy away for seeking help when needed.

After a long break, I jumped back into this tonight. Finished off Godrick!

How long was your break? I need to do this. Been off since July.

Worried I lost all the skills.

It would have been about 3 or 4 months I think? Enough for the skills to be a bit rusty, but not too long to completely forget everything.

Has anyone tried the Colosseum stuff yet?

I'm pretty sure I've exhausted most everything leading up to Margit, so that's tonight. 3rd run through all that stuff and still love the open world they've created. I'm very slow in my exploring so I've just hit level 32. Still enjoying 2-handing the

Spoiler: to not show very early game equipment

Lordsworn Greatsword, but debating if I want to put 4 points into Dex for the Claymore. I think I'm going to go 10 more endurance before I do that though.

Here's how I fair thus far:

That's the sword and war art (flame of redmanes) that I have used my entire play through. It's so good.

They apparently nerfed the flame of redmanes with last patch. I guess it used to do some insane poise damage, but having never used it before I don’t know the difference and it’s still very good.

Started this and have really enjoyed the simplicity and safety of being a sorcerer. Have made a lot of progress and the lack of traditional story has compelled me to really explore everywhere that’s available.

I just started too. I am enjoying it but it feels like the difference between going to the park (Elden Ring), and climbing a wall (Dark Souls). It's amazing that nearly every game system between the two are nearly identical, and yet this one change to scope makes it feel like a very different game.

A big thing for me, and I have never been able to get into From's other games, is that if I run into something I don't want to deal with I can just go somewhere else. There's also more bits of the map I haven't looked at, an entire new area, or something I put off earlier and now I can handle.

Also helps that playing as a sorcerer has really simplified the game mechanics; not having to worry about blocking & parrying while just focusing on dodging and FP consumption. There have only been a few fights that have been actually very difficult.

Elden Ring hits 20 million sold in less than a year

I know this was the talk of the town last year, but that's still just crazy to me.

Pretty amazing. I really should go do those other endings...

Me too but the game is so rich that I think I need to let it settle, when the DLC comes round I will be right back in from the start though.

Ooooh exciting.

Excellent I mean I always thought the game was a bit short.

It sure is taking them a long time to take more of my money. I'm pleasently surprised.

Well, I guess I should try to finish the game. I am right outside the capital city and everything got real snowy and cold. If I beeline to end, how much more do I have?

Three bosses in short succession, if I remember correctly. If you're able to kill them all on the first try, you could probably get it done in an hour.

Edit: Plan for more than an hour, but at least you know the scope of what you're dealing with. And yes, there are some convenient bonfires available during the run to the end.

Elden Ring Expansion Announced, Called Shadow of the Erdtree

It sounds like it could be a ways off, but I'm happy to wait. From's DLC track record is stellar across the board.

Very true. The DLC is often considered the best part of each game.

Excellent. Thank you.
